  1. I always ask if there are any concerns. Especially if is going against the mission of the TB. I email them and say I know what the mission is and if you want I'll just take it with, log it in a cache for miles, take some pics and bring it back for placing. Of course if the mission is something like "to travel from cache to cache" then by all means I'm happy to oblige
  2. It makes the finding of that cache that much better:) And ya know what, I don't even remember my first DNF anymore...
  3. I usually go by two basic rules... When the "distance to destination" is less than the current accuracy reading it is a good point to start searching. I.e. if accuracy is 25ft on my GPSr and the cache is bouncing around at 20ft to go, then it is close enough. Then I take into consideration what best accuracy I can get at the location. In the open mine usually gets 15ft, so I figure if that is my max possible error, and is also the max possible error of the hider, then I search in a 30 ft. radius from my zero out point. Poorer signal means more searching (like under trees n such). Of course if the GPSr leads you to the middle of a parking lot and there is a lamp post 15 ft away, then you should probably check the lampost (:
  4. There is an evil multi in south denver that is an hours drive for me. I attempted it once and got to the last stage which was in an awesome wetlands area. Wildlife was everywhere, a creek, nothing around at all. I DNF it and then cam back 3 months later to try again and I didn't even recognize the area. I checked the coords I had for the final and it put me under a brand new 4-lane traffic bridge. I couldn't believe it... The owner verified it and the final had to be moved.
  5. I just talk to mine in that high pitch excited voice that you wouldn't use if anyone else was around, "Where is it girl, where'd it go?!" and she gets so excited and just starts nosing around. I don't think she really has any clue what she's looking for, but she covers ground a lot faster than me and when she does turn it up she paws at it like, "Oh that must have been what I was looking for..." She is a 3 year old yellow lab. Awesome dogs for hiking too.
  6. This is Sami, our 3 year old yellow lab. She's a nut and a ton of fun (:
  7. I like to put an unactivated personal geocoin in mine. People seem to like them (:
  8. 17% None were event caches and the only virtuals I've done are still active.
  9. This sounds like an odd request but if anyone out there has the beanbag type dash mount in a jeep cherokee, how do you have it set up? I only ask because with the dashboard so shallow, when I accelerate a little fast or hit a bump, it tips and falls forward off the dash. I'm almost tempted to just wedge it in between the windshield and one of the bean bag corners to hold it but don't want to damage it... I can't be the only jeep driver with a garmin mounted so I'm just curious
  10. I agree ^. When the TB is released, the fact that it may be lost or stolen is just part of the game. Sending your sympathies to the owner and marking the TB as missing is quite enough.
  11. The fact is (without mentioning names) I know that some cachers around me archived a bunch of their listings but don't pick up their containers. I know I can see their listed caches in their profiles but I just started wondering how many other cachers just leave their geolitter around and wanted to be able to search them out. I have some common sense and know the rules, I just didn't think that archived caches would be intentionally hidden...
  12. I searched but just couldn't find a "click here and check this box" type of post. How do I run a query to pull up nearby archived caches, not just disabled ones? Thanks!
  13. A significant hike for junk. My kids would love hate it. We always CITO anyways so i don't understand what the point is. Just to grab another smilie? Just as many caches' purposes are for the hike, not the SWAG... There's a bigger picture to this than just dumping junk in the can, it would be a reminder to encourage caching etiquette as a whole, with a smiley for the effort.
  14. Like you even needed to ask... My first thought was you were going to put out a trash can....literally. Heck, I might as well (: I guess what I should have asked was, is this a common type of theme for a cache? If anyone out there has visited one or runs one, how is it generally accepted? Some people like mctoys and for some reason wouldn't want to put them in a trache can... has it led to angry notes on the listing?
  15. I am planning on placing a "Trache Can." It would be a huge ammo can geocache who's theme would be for geocachers to place all their dead batteries, broken mctoys, dollar store junk, rusty whatevers, business cards and other advertisements, etc. in it so that all the geocachers in the immediate area have no excuse for junking up other caches It goes without saying that I would clean it out often! I would also keep it stocked with decent swag for people to pick up in exchange for dumping their junk. Is this a decent idea? Has it been done before?
  16. The best swag is stuff that I would actually use. In my caches: SD memory cards (for digital cameras) Flash memory drives (just plain handy) Work gloves first aid kit tweezers batteries (only in caches that I can check often to make they aren't leaking) I am planning on placing a "Trache Can" soon, a huge ammo can geocache who's sole purpose is for geocachers to visit and place all their dead batteries, mctoys, dollar store junk, broken rusty swag, business cards and other advertisements, etc. so that all the geocachers in the immediate area have no excuse for junking up other caches
  17. You aren't the only one. Mine won't work for name, distance or last log.
  18. I have a cache that is hidden like the one you are asking about. I emailed a moderator about it and told them explicitly that it was in a hole dug by a shovel, but the fact is it wasn't dug for the cache, it was for a totally different reason and it wasn't even me who dug it. I simply took advantage of an existing hole and it was approved and published.
  19. Drafin's thread got me thinking, so what would you all have NOT changed if you had to start your geo-careers over? Me? I'm glad I started taking pictures right from the start. Some of the best memories come from going on a hike for a cache with my wife and dog and getting pics along the way. Oh, and I LIKE my geoname, wouldn't wanna change it (:
  20. A few things, first would be to start with a GPS with autorouting and features that you can use for something other than geocaching. Some don't need it, I went without it for a long time but now that I have it I use it to look up addresses and its estimated time to arrival is sooo much more accurate than google or mapquest... I now have a geocoin that I take with me and drop n grab to track my miles. Its something that I like but I didn't get until 25+ finds. That was a LOT of backlogging to get it up to date! Accept it that in the long run the numbers don't matter. I now average only 1 or 2 caches a week, but they are on hikes and the like. Those will be the caches that you remember and that friends will actually be interested in hearing, not the 1 of 23 you cache n dashed in a single day 6 months ago... Things that I wouldn't change... my geoname. I like what I picked (: Also the fact that I brought a camera with me right from the start. I now have a digital SLR with a 4Gig memory card that has its own backpack along with the rest of my SWAG.
  21. If you can manage basic HTML then you can always use iframes for displaying a page withing a page. I don't think that would count as scraping, it isn't like your using PHP to yank it and change it.
  22. Found one yesterday with some tiny eggs attached to the lid. Story and photo
  23. I have plenty of DNFs, but I don't add a log for a new DNF, I update it with the latest date and continue the story of my hunt. When I do find it I add a new log as a Found.
  24. Wow, good (sort of). I mean its good that I'm just not the only one who was puzzled by the way my trackables were showing up (:
