  1. It's almost 3,000,000 now... If Groundspeak make this exception, it will be hard for them to deny the next request like: "I want an exception for my cache! GCXXXX got, so I want too!" Much easier to just make one rule, and let every cache follow that. Less programming involved, and not that much that can cause problems. +1
  2. That's only 3% favorite points. Not that much really. It's also a problem when you have intermittent internet connection, or the site has heavy load. You only click once (doesn't matter if it's app, GSAK or website), but the log is saved twice. This change will ensure that *all* cases leading to duplicate logs will be eliminated. It will also be the end of endless discussions like "Do I log my own cache? The site allows me to do it, so it must be okay. Right?" etc.
  3. Do I understand you correctly if I read this as: you adopted 200 caches so you could log them yourself *after* adopting them?
  4. I've never logged one of these brass caps or the YOSM in the UK and I'm not bothered if they stay or go. It does strike me though that the above log with brass cap replaced by geocache would read just as well and be equally valid and valuable. Well said! If these brass caps are so fantastic, why can't you visit them without this virtual? And why can't you place traditional/mystery caches nearby and log those instead? Why not make a "YOSM Micro Series", like with the churches... Or even better, make it Large
  5. In all cases we (my wife and myself) have experienced double logging, it's been due to hiccups in the API, site overload etc. A message wouldn't help at all, since the extra log didn't come from our actions...
  6. When you as a finder look for a cache, the result is either "Found it" or "Did not find it". Since a CO won't be able to log "Found it", it makes perfect sense to remove the ability to post "Did not find" as well, since those two are the result of a search by the finder. The owner has "Owner Maintenance" or "Temporarily Disable Listing". If you don't have access to bookmark lists, a simple piece of paper will also do the trick... If you have more caches then you can keep track of with the tools that are available, you might have to many..? This is just my thoughts, but I don't think they're going to make that change. But if you've found the cache before, and know where it is, why not post a NM instead? I care about my own find count. And bugs in the API, and on the site itself, have caused double logs to appear. This change will prevent that from happening, which I think is good for everyone.
  7. That doesn't sound right... Maybe breaking of rules like this is giving Groundspeak another reason to *not* make exceptions for moving caches...
  8. Preventing the problem from ever happening, is a lot better than having all the cache owners be responsible for cleaning up the mess afterwards. A lot of cache owners are hesitant to delete logs, due to the fact that a lot of finders don't understand what's happening, and get upset and angry at the cache owner. That is no fun for either party. Having the ability to write an explanation when deleting (which I think's been requested several times already), would help a bit. But for this particular issue, this definitely is the easiest and best solution. Because if the CO can't find the cache, maintenance is needed. The "Temporarily Disable Listing" log type is approprierte when this happens. If the CO doesn't want to disable, you still have the option to leave a note. As I see it, NM logs are a message from the finder, to the cache owner. If the cache owner realize that the cache need maintenance, you have "Temporarily Disable Listing" and "Write note" to use. For keeping track of which caches that need maintenance, a bookmark list is much better anyway. I don't see any reason for them to do this. Just like you can write several notes, you can probably write as many DNF as you want. This change is helping to keep the find count correct, I don't see how that can be bad...
  9. I can only speak for the Android-version of the app (this being the Android subforum, that should be OK), since Android is the only mobile OS I've developed apps for. But this really is as simple as it can be. Android makes it really easy to create a settings fragment. And at least giving us the option to turn off the "alert every muggle in sight"-sound and change the units, is not adding a lot of complexity. My guess (and I might be wrong) is that Groundspeak is afraid of adding settings, they probably fear that it will be confusing for many. But I really hope you will consider adding settings, Groundspeak. It will make the app a lot better for the ones of us that doesn't fall into the "default category". I'm sad to say that the only reliable alternative for Android-users, is c:xxx. And I really do not want to install that app...
  10. I guess Groundspeak need to answer this. But if we look at the app, that changed from providing every cache type, to only traditional, I will expect that they at least have considered making this a premium feature. Sorry, I didn't know that. I've never been a basic member. My experience is that a (too) high number of new cachers find long descriptions, multiple waypoints etc. both confusing and boring. They don't even read the description. So as a cache owner, I really appreciate that my earthcaches, multi caches and mystery caches aren't available unless you either pay or visit the actual website. Well said. If you want access to everything, you pay the same as everyone else supporting this site. Seeing how many multi caches you have in your area, I get why you see it this way. When basic members only see easy traditionals, and there's almost none of them, of course they enjoy it more when they get access to everything... But if they like the traditional caches they can find, it's not that expensive for the shortest premium membership offered (three months, is it?). If they don't like it after three months, they can just cancel. I usually compare this to gym memberships. Here in Norway you have to pay around the same as one year premium membership costs for one month at a gym club. You can't just expect to be able to go in there, and say that you want to try everything they have, indefinitely, for free, and expect them to be okay with that. Marketing and community involvement is important. So even though it may seem like a waste of money to send lackeys around the world, I don't think it is. It's important for Groundspeak to get out, see the different local communities. Listen to people, see how their decisions affect us.
  11. Why should it? The ones paying for all this, should get access to more than the ones not paying... That being said, my guess is that is simply transfer the file you can download anyway by clicking "GPX file".
  12. Can you please bring back the old newsletter, Groundspeak? This new one is not as informative as the old one, it just has a lot more wasted space :/
  13. Because he's posting this bug report using his reviewer account
  14. I understand the reason Groundspeak do what they do, and I don't think they should stop looking at the language setting. They should just give us the option to change it ourselves. For most people, the "calculated default" would then be correct, and the rest of us could change it.
  15. There is no such thing as a global setting for units in Android. The other apps I have (including the old Geocaching app) have settings, which allows me to select metric (if not selected as default, which it often is). Google's own apps (I guess we can say that they know how Android work...) also give me metric units.
  16. Are you seeing that behavior after the update? If so, it's a bug we'll need to fix. Obviously we know that you need to be able to open disabled caches in order to submit an enable log for them. I see I was a bit too quick with this one The update finally found its way to my phone now. And I honestly have to say I'm a bit impressed. Both finding my own disabled caches, and opening them, are now easier than ever before. I've not been too positive about the new app until now (like most Norwegians*), but it looks like you've listened to our feedback (at least the bit I needed the most ). I love that you've replaced the normal Found it/DNF/Note-selection with the owner logs on my own caches! That was way better than what I expected. Now it doesn't just give me the same as the old app, it does it in a better way. The map also feels a lot faster, and the overall feel is a lot better. I can also open the map when navigating to a cache now, awesome! That's something I've been missing those few times when I use the app to navigate to a cache (which I only do on FTF hunts). That might have been possible since the last update, I don't go on FTF hunts that often I still don't think you're quite there yet (attributes, etc) - but you're getting really close! Keep up the good work, and please don't stop listening to our feedback * This video about Norwegians have been made by the Norwegian Public Broadcasting Corporation:
  17. Just that you apparently have your phone set to American English, even though you are neither. It just struck me as droll. No harm intended. (edit: for what it's worth, I have my GPSr set to Australian, but that's because I love hearing a robotic Aussie mangle place names when I am driving.) I like it that way Firstly, it's a nice way to improve my English skills. Secondly, technical stuff is way better in English than it is in Norwegian. I have the same settings on my PC, my Garmin Nüvi, my Garmin Montana and most other devices I have. And I have to admit, I also love hearing the mangled place names and Norwegian road names But I don't think I should have to justify to Groundspeak why I want to have my phone set to English (US) Maybe I don't know enough about it, but it sounds like GS is making sure not to override the decision you've expressed globally. But feel free to set me straight: are you saying you want geocaching to use one unit of measure while everything else on the phone uses another? Every other app on my phone displays units in metric/celcius. This app is the only one that doesn't. As said earlier, the old app gave me the unit I wanted... The only setting I've done globally is "Language", and I prefer US over UK. Nowhere have I told my phone that I want every app to use imperial units.
  18. I know exactly what my options are. But why should Groundspeak force me to use other settings than I want to use? So my issue is that Groundspeak is forcing me to change the settings of my phone, which I do not want to do. I have a lot of other GPS-enabled apps, and they all allow me to tell them I want to use metric units. The old app also did that... Yes, I'm Norwegian. What does that have to do with this?
  19. Help Center: 1.4. Change distance units (miles/kilometers) Could you please consider making this a setting in the app? I don't want to change the language of my phone, just to get this app to use the units that I know...
  20. I'm still waiting to get the update available. But I guess you've fixed that as well then, awesome!
  21. Awesome! Since that's what I mainly use the app for, it just became usable for me. Thanks! Btw, it would also be nice to be able to open disabled caches in the app (when trying to do that now, I get a message saying that the GC code is invalid), the enable log type is a lot more useful then
  22. I just got the 2nd weekly newsletter with the new format. I just got the first. And I'm sorry to say that I also liked the old format a lot better. The information takes too much space in the new one. It might look better at first, but it takes a lot more scrolling and reading to get the same information as I could get just by taking a quick look at the old one. But I guess making it responsive, so that I can see to, or three, columns on my huge desktop monitor, will fix what annoys me about it. I hope you'll at least consider that, Groundspeak

    Website Down?

Where do you get that number from? I still think that keeping a social media expert on duty 24/ is a waste of money... Laughable. I just happen to know what it's like to have a lot of people relying on a service. Every second counts. And YAY it's back. I guess you get a better understanding of this if you actually have had to get up in the middle of the night to fix server issues yourself...
