I've just begun this hobby, but I have friends around here that are totally hooked. One of my buddies wife threatened to leave him if he didn't stop going so much. I live in an area thats surrounded by various nature trails, state parks and so on, so its easy to get addicted in a place like this.

Our Geocaching community here in Pike County Kentucky seems to get along pretty well. They usually have organized events where everybody gets together and has a good time. I guess a bad apple can spoil things for everyone else though. I guess we're lucky though, because it'd be difficult to moderate the cache locations in our area, because a lot of them are out in the scenic areas.

My buddy Mark is a serious geocacher. He says it really depends on how far you want to go with it, whether to purchase at REI or not. I'd say its a "nice to have if you have the cash" kind of thing myself.
