  1. With all the snow we got this winter there should be a lot of good pictures out there. I'll start with pictures of Cloquallum Guy and Frisbee'r putting on chains in Olympic Naitonal Forest. The chains were useless and we had to give up on the Cache hunt. We were going for Dennie Ahl Hill. Frisbee'r and I put on snow shoes and hiked six miles to get the cache on Monday. A short video to capture the moment
  2. Thanks, the next time I'm way over in Seattle I'll look those up.. I should also ask if there are any the Olympia / Shelton area.
  3. No view up there.. http://mosswalks.blogspot.com/2008/01/dow-mountain.html Your post here quoted my post about Scar Hill Lookout, but your report seems to discuss Dow Mountain. ?? Yeah my bad..
  4. Ruck must have read my trip report of the Dow Mountain hike. No view up there.. http://mosswalks.blogspot.com/2008/01/dow-mountain.html
  5. So I took a land navigation class last week and now I want to practice my new skills. I've seen mystery caches that use compass bearings but I don't know of any active ones. Can you all list some for me?
  6. It's been quite a year for snow on the Skok. I was really surprised that there was no snow on Mount Walker yesterday. If we get pineapple express all that snow will melt and the Skok will have another major flood. I'm glad you got to use your snowshoes this time. I've gotten plenty of use out of my snow shoes and my new snow tires this season.
  7. Pictures from my hike to the cache site. Did you get the "turn here" cache? it's a tough one (or it will be) even when there is no snow.
  8. I hope you post those pictures on the cache page. Do come back in the summer when it's just six miles round trip to the lake. The Lake has a climax old growth forest ringing it. What main road is 5 miles from there? You are on the 23 all the way.. I think you mean where the turn off for the lower trail head is? That was us at Brown Creek Campground on MLK day the report is here: http://mosswalks.blogspot.com/2008/01/crim...on-mlk-day.html
  9. I hope you post those pictures on the cache page. Do come back in the summer when it's just six miles rount trip to the lake. The Lake has a climax old growth forest ringing it.
  10. OMG! I did not know you all were going for my cache today.. I'm glad I hiked up Mount Walker this week instead of trying to do the skok.. So how much snow is on the Skokomish Trail? Are those snow tires on your truck? Is your truck still there? I had a crazy thing happen near my Jeep the day I placed that cache. http://mosswalks.blogspot.com/2008/01/pine-lake-almost.html I hope you can get your truck out of there as soon as possible! This was taken the day I placed that cache: http://bp2.blogger.com/_n-H9SSVlHFs/R4GKGb...reeshotlive.jpg Some morons shot up two trees while I was out hiking.. more pictures on the website.
  11. That is not the only new cache in area 1. I see you have it on your bookmark list already. Grisdale Hill Site of an old fire look out tower. A tower was built here in the 1940's and then abandoned. I did not look around much in the snow but I found one of the anchors. Here is a GPX track log (right click to save) to help you find your way. I also have a Lookout Cache on South Mountain and this is the perfect time to go for it. With most of the high country closed you can still get some good exercise on South Mountain. South Mountain is just outside of Shelton. I have put a downlaodable .GPX tracklog on the cachepage. I will see if I can put a cache on nearby Dayton Peak too.
  12. Several nearby businesses were evacuated as a bomb squad defused a crude explosive device found near a phone junction box in the Tacoma suburb of Parkland. Pierce County sheriff's Detective Ed Troyer says a robot was used "to disrupt the device" yesterday afternoon. Troyer says a technician from the Qwest telephone company found the device - which appeared to be a pipe bomb - at the phone junction box. The sheriff's department shut down 112th Street between Pacific Avenue and C Street South during the investigation. Investigators don't know whether the junction box was the target of the explosive, but Troyer says chances are it was simply abandoned or hidden there.
  13. I was hoping to try for this next weekend but can't change a tire so figure chains would be too much of a challenge for me Cable chains are a real PITA. True chains are not so bad to put on but are hard to find for smaller cars. I got snow tires for my Jeep, it needed new tires anyway. I let the tire store change my tires. I'm really having a blast with my snow tires. Someone got stuck in the snow and had to be rescued from Spider Lake Just yesterday. I'm advising people not to go up there right now.
  14. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...b5-52e0ac608a02 (mine) This is snowshoe cache and a chance for FTF. You will need chains or snow tires just to reach the parking spot. Also the Lower Skokomish Trail has enough snow on it right now to make snowshoes useful for the first 2.5 miles and almost necessary after 2.5 miles but there are a lot of blow downs after 2.5 miles too. I had a blast snowshoeing out there today. Also http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...5c-37c5fd66a02d is probably a snowshoe cache right now but makes for a long hike during these short winter days. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...e2-cca0b0894d0e is another one. Then there is http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...b2-085d79ed037c and http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...b2-085d79ed037c (but that might be too ambitious) Also http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...b2-085d79ed037c is sometimes a snow shoe cache. This one http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...e2-cca0b0894d0e is very snowbound but probably too ambitious.
  15. Depends on how old the cache is for an older cache that all of the local cachers have already found it might be better if it was archived and replaced with a new cache.
  16. I just hid my 100th cache Lucky Koi's 100th Of my 100 caches only one is in a lamp post and it's an NRV.
  17. I placed a snowshoe cache today.. I don't know how long it will be a snow shoe cache though. No way I could have placed it without shoes.. when I took them off I sunk to my thigh.
  18. Lower South Fork Skokomish is a snowshoe hike at the moment. Last year you were looking for a snowshoe hike in the Olympics. I have two caches on that trail and there are several caches on the way to it. This the the table at the trail head. FS23 is plowed.
  19. I have several caches out by Staircase that may have been impacted but to road to them is closed until April 1st so I won't know until then. I've got one called "coming up rocks" that might be gone I'm not going to drive way up there just to look at it so I'll wait for the next cacher. Three bridges on the Big Creek Trail are gone so I've disabled the cache I had under a bridge up there. My cache in Hoodsport may be gone but probably not. My cache under the goldsbourgh bridge in shelton if not gone is sure to be soaked. The river was up to the bottom of the bridge, I'm going to check on it soon.
  20. I'm getting ready to go out hiking this morning but it's snowing here at sea level and my Jeep needs new tires so I don't want to drive anywhere.
  21. Well my SO is always warning me about the possibility of the road giving way. I guess I'll pay more attention to him now.
  22. The Oregon Caves were more beautiful in the 70's. Back then they had a light show and mirrors down there. The caves were really something to see back then.
  23. I think they were drunk and parked with one wheel over the edge.
  24. The USFS plans to close the road to Staircase 11/1/07. I assume they will keep it closed until April or May like they did last year. If you own a cache up there you might want to free the travel bugs in it. No place near home for me to hike again this winter.. I'm so disspointed.. My knee is hurting so I don't know if I can make it up to the top of Mount Rose to get travel bug out of my cache before the road closes. Mount Rose is a real knee grinder. I think I've got a bunch of caches up there that I will have to disable. Two of them have only been found once.
