Sounds like a great way to spend the day with your kid. Builds memories too. When I find a cache in the snow, after I log it, I walk all over and around, leaving footprints everywhere, so I don't give away the cache location. If it's muddy, I try to hop from rock to rock to log, so I don't leave a track.

Just post a note to your cache page that reads "Disabling until Spring (or whatever) due to construction at cache site. Cache is inaccessible until construction is complete." Send the same note to the reviewer. Nothing else you can do about it, unless you personally hire a full time crew to get the work done sooner!

That's way better than my odd experience. Someone logged that one of my caches was found, but it was no longer an ammo can, as it says in the description. Someone swapped out my ammo can for a lock and lock. Wasn't me. Another cacher checked on it for me and sure enough, a fully stocked lock and lock, with original contents. I will have to go out and check who added the new logbook and speak with them, and see if they know anything. nd this is a cache the Newtown Forest Association asked me to place for them. They got the log too, and the news distressed them. I am hoping that it isn't the result of someone being upset with an ammo can after the Sandy Hook shootings (same town), because what better harmless use of an ammo can, eh? Trade UP or EVEN, gosh darn it!!! And never trade the container!!!! Those things aren't cheap or that easy to come by. Wish they had left me some money, too.

Difficulty, like beauty, is on the eye of the beholder. What might be easy for the young man sitting near me, is going to cause me pain to even attempt. And the stats on my profile are meaningless. I ran them and found out I found a cache in a state I've never been too. And my milestones were not my milestones. But I don't care about the numbers at all. And I see the poster before me just said the very same thing about difficulty. Great minds think alike.

I was robbed while caching. They smashed my rear side window and grabbed my purse, which was hidden. I cancelled all my cards from the parking lot. The cops found the purse later and months later, some hikers from NY found my wallet and dropped it off at my house. Money gone, all the cards and my license intact. Moldy, but intact.

Well. I went to an event tonight and to get there I had to drive through Newtown. The higway was backed up. Route 6 was backed up. Church Hill was backed up. I knew the back roads so I cut through and knocked off a lot of the traffic jam, but still had to make it through Sandy Hook to get to Rte. 34. It took me about 10-15 minutes to get down the hill. I knew I would be driving through Newtown, so I had signs in my back windows "Media! Show some respect. Leave the mourners in peace." And I drove into Sandy Hook, and I've never seen it look more beautiful. Christmas lights and decorations, and so many memorials on the lawns. And people everywhere, the restaurants were hopping. And the cars in the traffic jam were being polite! A few out of state plates. And the memorial on the corner was huge. There were two traffic cops at the intersection. And two corners (only two have sidewalks) were packed with the media. There were blinding lights set up, and traffic was moving very sliwly. The whole town was one big traffic jam. This particular intersection in Sandy Hook is dad a normal day. My niece got hit by a car there one day. (She used her karate lessons and pushed off, survived but bruised up) And for them to choose this spot to set up is just ridiculous. There doesn't need to be that many reporters there. My sister was in town today, and told a cameraman not to take her picture. As she's hugging a neighbor, she sees the cameraman peeking out from behind a tree snapping their photo!

The town is overrun with media. The media are knocking on every door for a sound bite. The media is renting office space and settling in for a good long time. The media should go away. People are coming from all over with flowers, candles, letters, stuffed animals, banners, money.... Memorials are popping up everywhere. The street by the school is lined with Christmas trees and people are decorating them with mementos. The local supermarket put two people on every single register, for security reasons. And the funerals.... one after another..... There was a bomb threat at the church during the first service. A man was arrested for breach of peace... for carrying an umbrella strapped to his back, wearing all black, and a face mask, at the train station two towns away. Someone thought the umbrella was a rifle, or a sword. Life is going to be different. Edit: spelling

As a local to the tragedy, and friend of the cache owner, let me say that the more love that pours in, the more you restore our faith in humanity. We don't mind. It's been a really heartbreaking week. I cry at the least mention. I almost cried when a customer came in today with a small child, because he was so cute and innocent. The smallest thing, like making dinner, has me thinking of children who will never learn to cook, fall in love, go hiking, fishing, camping, to their prom, their wedding, have children of their own. Please, feel free to show that you care. The cache owner is the volunteer asst. fire chief. He and his family are OK. Peace on earth. We were all at a very happy event last week. It seems like a year ago. Love. Joy for the holidays to all. That cache page helped me last night, to know that there is still good out there.

I always hope these young people are getting permission, too. One suggestion would be to sweep the area clean of unmaintained, neglected caches, that are missing, damp with no replacement forthcoming, etc... and start anew. I'm sure there must be a few of those. Post a needs maintenance, and see if the cache owner is responsive and still active. There are a zillion caches out there with CO's that have left the game. I am in the increase the distance camp. A quarter mile is a good start. I can see 528' away from where I stand. Why would I need another container so close? I should mention I am not a fan of urban caching, (but I have done some) because I always doubt that permission was asked and granted, and I always feel creepy about looking for caches in urban environments. Only a couple of urban caches stand out in my mind as being memorable.

Just a wild guess. Are there any punctuation marks in their name? I know I've been unable to send PMs to people who punctuated their name, and had to email them through their profile page. I don't know if that was ever changed.

Sounds like it can only be found by people with a certain type of phone. And that's not very fair to the ones who don't have it. Sure, yeah, special equipment and all that, but now it's just getting way too specialized between chirps, and QR codes and this and that, it's diversifying away from the intent of game, in my own opinion, to use GPS and satellites to find the cache. After seeing the write up on that posted cache, and reading the logs, I am way less interested in this kind of cache. I would not seek it out.

If it feels good, do it. If it doesn't feel good, don't do it. I think my longest streak might be three days. I don't really know. I never paid attention. My only goal was to hit 100 in my first year. (there were a lot less caches then.) When I did it with days to spare, I changed my goal to getting caches in all New England states in a year, and did that, too. My next goal was just to make a 10/10/10/ event my 1000th cache. Do it for the fun of it.

On my own, I attach a toothpick, or cut bbq skewer. The bobby pin could work for caches not equipped with one.

Yes it was. I had the screen pulled over my clutter. I wasn't the only one around that time. There was a rash of break ins.

My car is always cluttered. That strategy doesn't always work. At least they didn't get the camera equipment belonging to the cacher/photographer who was visiting with me, looking for special caches across the US! They only took my purse. Which the cops found. I had all the cards cancelled by the time the cops showed up. Months later, some hikers found my wallet, and brought it to my house.

And they sell them in packs of like 100/$1.50+/-. So if you lose it, no big whoop.

You must all be men. We women know that this makes an excellent tool for everything from lock picking to log rolling. Edit to add: and they are adjustable, and the plastic ends can be scraped off to avoid resistance.

I'd hurry up, if I were you, before someone grabs the spot.

Hikes, paddles, and beautiful places. If I cared about the numbers, I would have all my finds logged. Trying to figure out which ones I missed is a lot of work. My geocaching app searches generally involve Traditional, letterbox hybrids (but not for the letterbox aspect of it), and sometimes, but rarely, multis. Terrain and difficulty depends on what hurts at the time. Since the brain hemorrhage, I haven't done much hiking at all. I spent my summer in my kayak. I got a few paddle caches in. And did some easy roadside caches in VT and NY. But would have preferred to be walking in the woods, climbing a hill, or even a rail trail.

If I am a Puritan, then so is Smokey the Bear. Sorry if you feel that way. But I know the guy with no nose and not much of his own face, and the girl who whose neck is made from the skin off her legs, because of fire. Never play with fire. You don't know the fire skills of others. You only know your own. At least I was trying to give you an idea to use that could use fire in another form. Flashlight and glow in the dark paint. Just leave hot flames out of it. Common sense is not very common.

If you've read the other thread, then you know my opinion. Fire is bad for caching. A black eye on the face of the game, as they say. The modern day torch is known as a flashlight. Why can't that be your fire? Get rid of the steam idea. Rethink it. No fires!
