  1. No, it did not. I went back and looked at the listing, and the only limitation the listing showed was PMO. I get the idea (and this is an assumption on my part) the owner had the impression that making it PMO meant only PMs could log it until the the PMO status was removed. Had the listing specified "non-PM logs will be deleted", would it have carried any weight? (This is a question I'm asking for myself. I'm still learning.)
  2. I think you're right on all counts. A good assessment of the situation, indeed. So, when do the cache owner's rules for finding a cache have weight? If one places a cache, and specifies certain conditions (i.e., PM only for FTF, must email me with info to claim the log, etc.) in the listing, do those conditions have any weight to them at all, or is it more of a "I found it, that's all that counts" thing?
  3. I think they're both rooted on standing by a principle or a mental standard for how things should be, and they have differetn perspectives. When the finder rubbed the owner's nose in it in local caching forums, I don't think it helped matters. But, that doesn't change the original scenario. I think they're both good guys, they're both just entrenched, and each believes he's right in his position. (sigh) I may just take it off my watch list, I need to free up some time. Now I'm that all worried about the starving people in the world, I don't have time for anything else. I just hope nobody also mentions Iraq, the school shootings this week, or the mayor of Jackson, Miss. I can only worry about so many things at once.
  4. Hmmm..... Good question. I don't have a dog in this hunt, but am aware of it (it's on my watch list) because my email box has been filling up with "cache has been logged" notices. I may shoot an email to one or the other and inquire as to whether or not they have been keeping up with the hungry vs adequately-fed ratio for the world.
  5. STAGE ONE: The owner of a new cache made it Premium Members Only. So far, so good. STAGE TWO: A group of cachers got together and went looking for it. Some of them were PMs, some were not. STAGE THREE: The guy who actually laid hands on it first wasn't a PM. He found it, signed the log book, and then went and claimed FTF on the published listing by using the backdoor method. The cache owner had been pretty specific that this was a PMO cache. STAGE FOUR: The cache owner deletes the log, and adds a note that since it's a PMO cache, only a PM should be able to claim FTF. The non-PM players logs it again. Repeatedly. Frequently. The cache owner deletes the log each time. STAGE FIVE: The non-PM goes and pays the PM fee at GC.Com, become a PM (after the initial unsuccessful attempts to log the cache), and now continues trying to log the cache as FTF. The cache owner continues to delete the log each time it pops up, because the player wasn't a PM when he found it. So far, there have been over 25 attempts to log this cache. SO, THE QUESTION: PMs show the cache listing to a non-PM player, a non-PM player finds it first; is his attempt to log it on the listing ethically valid, or should he leave it alone since he didn't follow the cache owner's rules?
  6. Thanks for the help. It's now listed as WMRTD.
  7. Was hiding a geocache on land adjacent to land owned by the National Park Service, and found this marker. The faded witness post next to it declared "US Boundary". The markings were USDI 3H .F0T1 1951 NPS Can anyone tell me if these are tracked online anywhere? It was set in a 6" square concrete post, and appears to be a brass disc.
  8. I know there are geocaches that lead to webpages, or that include webpages as stages. I figured it would be easier to ask here than to mount a large search project.
  9. I'm looking for published cache listings that lead to webpages or URLs as part of a multi-stage cache. For example, GCV09V, Wonderland, leads to a URL as the second stage, and then there are more stages beyond that. Can anyone reference other cache listings that lead to URLs at some level? Many thanks, and happy trails.......................
  10. Not so much "when", as "how". The point of this cache wasn't as much the final container as it was the path taken to get there. On this cache, the trip was at least as imprtant as the destination. As the cache hider, it does matter. More important things in life? Certainly. But the 'more important things' aren't the only things that matter. If we didn't care about when or how it was found, why bother publishing at all? Why not just post the coords and a picture of the box in the forums, with a map? We do it through publication to help ensure some integrity in the process. So, again, anyone have suggestions on things to always do, or always avoid, to keep the cache private until publication?
  11. That sounds pretty entertaining, but I wasn't wantig to turn the tables on them, a much as I was wanting to look for pitfalls to avoid while trying to keep the cache undiscovered prior to publication. I learned of the TB ploy recently through an unpleasant incident, and would like to avoid similar ploys I've not yet encountered. Still, you have a good imagination. I wouldn't have time to sit and watch, but maybe if I could install a webcam to keep an eye on the pre-FTF events......... Hmmmm................
  12. Howdy, This is not about FTFers. (Every cache should have an FTF at some point, or it's wasted effort for the hider.) In our area, we have some players who thrive on trying to locate and log caches befoer they are published. They refer to this as a "pre-FTF". Until recently, I thought a cache was secure/secret prior to publication. I guess I was naive. I've learned since then that some of these people use what they refer to as "backdoor methods' for figuring out where a cache container might be prior to publication. Personally, I would prefer players to not find my caches until they are published. Once published, I don't care if they are found in five minutes or five days. So, the question: What should a cache hider be sure to DO or sure to NOT DO to help make sure the cache isn't located prior to publication? I'll start the list with this: Never add TBs to the cache listing before publication. Anyone else?
  13. This one (GCH6F7) has been missing for most of the year. Emails, and attributes added have had no response.
  14. I agree. If I make a new cache a PMO cache, how can I tell the difference between PMs and non-PMs? There's quite a trend around here for non-PM players to try to log PMO caches. Will their log entries show them to be PM or non-PM? (BTW, I now hold one of your reviewer geocoins in inventory. Is that a banana on the obverse? Inquiring chimps want to know. )
  15. I've started filtering by this method, but it is cumbersome. Create a list, then bookmark each listing, then ignore each listing, and then remember to go back near the appropriate date, un-igonre them, drop them from the bookmark list, etc. It does work, but it's not a smooth process. After some thought, doing a small mod to the ignore feature would accomplish the same task. Instead of tagging listings as just "ignore", allow the entry of an expiration date on the ignore tag. This would accomplish the same purpose. Set the default expire date to be 00/00/00, and if the default is kept, then the ignore tag is indefinite. If an expire date is set, then the ignore tag expires on that date, the the listing becomes visible again. Allowing a comment for the expiration date would be nice, but I'm not going to push my luck by suggesting it. I know tampering with the code on a smoothly operating package is daunting at times, but I'd find a hundred uses for ignoring a listing until a certain date, and I think other members would as well. Thanks for taking the time to consider this.
  16. Now there's an idea........... Is there a limit to the number of listings that can be put in a bookmark list?
  17. Howdy, There is a situation that arises frequently here in the Southeastern US. We'll see a GC show up that we'd like to find, but it's the summer season. The temp is 95-105 degrees, the underbrush has grown over, the ticks and snakes are thick, and we decide to ignore that GC until December or January, when the conditions are more favorable to GCing. Premium Members are already able to filter out GCs to for our account to look for based the FOUND/NOT FOUND flag. It would sure be nice if we could also set a date flag on GCs that can't be hunted right now, and have them drop off our list of "not found" caches until that date comes around. For instance, let's say I visit a GC, look at the surroundings, and want to make note to myself to forget the GC until January. I'd like to be able to log in, bring up the listing for that GC, and set the date flag to Jan. 10, 2007. This GC would then not show up on my unfound list again until 1/10/07 arrives. I'm sure there are other parts of the country where snowfalls make some GCs too hard to find, and it would be nice to be able to ignore those GCs until the spring thaw. Just an idea. I know it would improve our game state, and probably that of others. Happy trails.................................
  18. I have the ability and facility to make a half dozen personal geo-coins. Is there a way to make just a few geocoins, give them numbers I generate, adn track them online? I have no desire for the 500 minimum required to have them made commercially. Am I the only one with this question? Happy trails.................
  19. Just bought a new Magellan Meridian Gold, and am very pleased with what I've seen so far. I know I need a cover for it and a vehicle dash mount, as well as a car charger. Any suggestions on those items? What about SD card size, other maps, etc? What has been your experience? Thanks in advance.
  20. Just purchased a Garmin Legend GPS, and am curious what (if any) accessories or extras I should be looking for with this unit. It's going to be used for GCing and some basic "don't get lost" scenarios. All this in North America. My thanks in advance. Regards, WebChimp
