  1. Not only has she found a huge number of caches, she has also hidden an impressive total. I plan to be in central Wisconsin the week of Oct 21. I hope I have time to look for a few of her caches then. Aladin Sane
  2. I just ordered a set for my Map 330. They were not listed last Friday. I sent them an email (as others also may have) asking if the 300 series could be included. This morning, here they are.
  3. I use the Heavens Above site to program my Meade ETX 70 Telescope to track satellite passes. Just another manifestation of my gadget addiction.

  5. I have had exactly the same experience on several occasions. I slavishly follow the little arrow on my GPS until I find the cache. I then look up on the way back to my truck, and can't decide what trail to take out. I have taken wrong turns that end up adding a mile or more to my return trip. I never feel that I am really lost or in danger, but it is an odd sensation. Aladin Sane

  7. It sounds like you may not be using the correct map datum. You set the map datum by pressing the Menu key, scrolling to Setup and pressing enter, scrolling to Map Datum and pressing enter, Scrolling to Primary and pressing enter, scrolling to WGS84 and pressing enter. Try that, I hope it solves your problem. Aladin Sane

  9. Sorry Indem, but your water cycle explanation is not very accurate. What you are describing are mainly physical changes of water. The chemical changes that can occur with water or any other chemical compound can indeed destroy a water molecule. The individual atoms that make up the water molecule are not lost, but are rearanged into other hydrogen and oxygen containing compounds. By the same token, new water molecules are created every time oxygen combines with hydrogen during the combustion of any type of fuel. The atoms are forever, the molecules come and go.
  10. I was referencing song lyrics from 100th Meridian by Tragically Hip. My question is real though. How is Iowa not considered a Midwest State? Aladin Sane
  11. Can anyone explain to me why Iowa is in the Great Plains Forum and Missouri and Minnesota are in the Midwest? Doesn't everyone know the great plains start at the 100th meridian?
  12. Excuse me, but am I the only person that snickers to myself whenever I see someone using treking poles. I just can't help it. It looks like they forgot their skis. I apologize in advance to all pole users I have now offended.
  13. I have a tale similar to the Hevenly Host. I was hunting a cache in some fairly heavy tree cover with open patches of weeds and raspberry thrown in. I had parked about 1/2 mile away from the cache location and bushwacked my way in. My GPS continued to point me toward a fallen tree after a couple of triangulation runs. I looked around in the general area of the tree for about a half hour and could not find it. I was about to give up. The heat and bugs where terrible. I sat down on the suspect log and had a drink of water. Suddenly my GPS did an about face and pointed 50 feet in a new direction. I walked over and found the cache. I then left, bushwacking on a slightly different path than I took on the way in. When I got to the car, I reached for my cell phone to call my wife and let her know I was OK and heading for home. At my waist hung the empty case for my cell phone. Argh!!! I thought about driving to a pay phone and having my wife call the cell every five minutes until I found it. Then I decided I could just use the GPS to back track my route and look for the phone. I followed my same route in, looked in the cache area for another 1/2 hour and then followed my route back out. I finally found the phone about 200 feet from the car under a tangle of rasberry vines. The battery had fallen out when the phone struck the ground, so it would not have rung even if the wife had called. I now keep the phone in my pack when caching.

  15. I just completed a four state cache hunt, and I got to wondering how many different states people have found caches in in a single day. I hit Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Iowa. It seems to me that people out east would have an unfair advantage in this type of hunt. Just wondering Aladin Sane
  16. I have always differentiated sports from games by one simply guideline. You can not drink a beer while actively involved in a sport.
  17. I have been using a Map 330 x for about a month now. I got it for $200 at Sam's Club and got the $50 rebate. I have no complaints about the unit at all. I don't understand your question about problems zooming into waypoints. I can zoom down to 100 feet. I use the unit for caching and as an electronic map when travelling in a car. I love it. I just load up a detailed map of where ever I am flying to for work and then use it to drive to my final destination. I can't believe the detail of the maps. I would highly recomend this unit to anyone. Get one before they are gone.

    Iowans?

I live in Cedar Rapids. I am a gadget junkie. Since I also love to hike and camp, this is a perfect blend of two of my addictions.
