  1. Oh, before I forget...

Thank you for all the emails, but I'm sorry to say No I don't have any of the terrain coins for sale. These were sold by the store back in '06 and have long since sold out. I hope to design a new 5 Star terrain coin in the near future utilizing what I've learned in the hundreds of completed designs since that early attempt though. :)

Any chance these will be available on ebay buy it nows?

I think i remember seeing a few GCS horror stories here so i'd prefer a maybe "higher priced but i'm going to get my stuff" option.

I remember a few stories myself, but never from GCS (there were a few from a similarly named company a couple years ago if that's what you're thinking of). Geocoinstore has a particularly good reputation for customer satisfaction which is why I like working with them. I'm not selling any at all, but some people may eventually list them on ebay I suppose.

  2. I need help. I went caching a few years back and picked up a coin for "Fallen Heros". I had every intention on moving the coin on but life happened and I never went geocaching again...until now. I have always felt guilty of not moving the coin. I am about to embark on a trip to Florida where I want to put the coin in a cache. The coin is in honor of Specialist Nathiel A. Caldwell from Omaha, NE. If anyone knows how I can get the coin moving again I would appreciate the help. The coin was found in Gainesville, Virginia and it is time to be moving on. As far as I know it does not have any serial #'s other then ******. Not sure if that is a code for the coin or not. It has the American flag on one side and all the branches of service on the other (with the number on a jet). RIP Nathiel and thank you for your service and sacrifice to this country.

If you do not have the means to find a cache then an easy alternative is to just locate any local cache from your profile and click the link to the cache owner. You can make contact by email and drop it locally directly into the hands of another active cacher. ;)

  4. Awesome coin. 5 star rated caches are some of my favorites. I have Qualified for The 50/50 club with 81 D/5s and 55 T/5s. I just need some warmer weather to kayak to the final container. I will be looking to add these to my collection for sure.

That's outstanding!!! I've never heard of this, but that's the most insane thing I've heard in a long time - lol.

I have some pics! It's a little hard to see the soft vs. hard enamels or the subtle metal elevation differences that change the color saturation (some areas have the same trans fill, but with different depths so they look like the shallow vs. deep end of a pool in color sat) but I'm lovin what I see so far. I think this is going to be one of those ones you have to examine in hand to see every little detail. :D

  5. In the summer of 2006 I designed one of my first few geocoins dedicated to 5 Star Terrain rated caches. I wanted to create a complimenting coin for the 5 Star Difficulty rated caches right away, but somehow just never got the chance. I never forgot though and last year began shuffling around ideas in the ol' thought-locker for how to approach the idea again. So much has changed since that early attempt in geocoin design. So much has changed in myself and the way I design, too. It was time to take a challenge in hand :)

While perusing some historical art texts last fall I ran across an image that would finally spur the idea into solid forward motion. The Devil himself carved in relief depicting him in repose as the master of strife. As beautiful as the carving was, the word "strife" was what really captured my attention. It comes from the ancient Germanic "estrif" which means to fight or struggle to overcome. The perfect word to describe the brain wracking battle to emerge through an exceptionally tough 5 star Difficulty rated cache with a successful find!

I started thinking about the motivation behind both the setting of and the search for the elusive 5 star Difficulty cache. The Devil has many tools to twist the mind and 5 different aspects emerged quickly in my thoughts. 1) Some of us suffer from the Temptation and can only ease the yearning by giving in to the challenge of the hunt. 2) Others succumb to the Pride of pitting ones wits against another to overcome the challenge and record their deeds for all to see. 3) For some Vanity can motivate someone to set a cache to test the mettle of the most fearless hunters. 4) Envy of another cacher's ability to set a truly evil cache can spur even the meekest cacher on a path to create a truly diabolical cache of their own. 5) Finally, Avarice is a powerful tool to compel a cacher to both find and hide every kind of cache from the simplest 1 star to the most heinous 5 star Difficulty cache ever hidden.

The devil delights in his tools of strife and the subsequent tears of rage and frustration spilled during the hunt of these elusive caches from failed attempts. I've heard people swear they would never even try one themselves while simultaneously drooling over stories of other's conquering tales of victory. The chance to pay back the Devil his due and spit in his eye as one stands over ground zero holding a 5 star aloft is a dream for many and a reality for the intrepid few. This coin celebrates the strife and trial of attempting to add the 5 Star Difficulty cache to your record of caching victories.

The face of this coin depicts bat winged and dragon tailed Lucifer in all his horrible glory with trident in hand looking down on the mortals who dare hold his effigy. His barbed serpentine tail wraps the entire border of the coin before winding back up onto his trident. Armored in scale mail armor, his image is filled in translucent IHEs and surrounded by a blood red pool of soft translucent enamel. That's right, BOTH hard and soft enamels on the same side of the coin!

The reverse of the coin displays the cache, the 5 stars of difficulty and his evil minions lording it over each of the 5 sins of strife. Each of the devils covets or hoards his subject of interest in a 5 point ring around the central cache. Also in BOTH soft and hard enamels, the barbs of the Devils tail wrap over the outer edge to border this side as well.

Of course if you're a fan of Dante you know that hell is also frozen over in some places so we couldn't miss the opportunity to also create a "Hell's Frozen Over" version of this geocoin at the same time!

    FrostBothSides.jpg

You can find both coins in shiny metals of Gold or Silver.

    1.75" x 3.5mm thick

    Dual Hard and Soft Enamels

Fire and Ice versions will be available soon at the geocoinstore website.

As always, thanks for the words of support and extremely generous advice from cachers everywhere. Of course a big thanks to the boys at geocoinstore for supporting these projects, too. They simply wouldn't happen without a lot of generosity from everyone. I owe you all my thanks! :)

  6. Meant to post this earlier and I'm still searching for the other pics. (part of the downside of everything electronic you own being capable of taking pics! - lol) Paws with one of his two missions...

    Xanderxchange1.jpg

He loves getting mail and I think we're going to start building a scrap book of the envelope return addresses and unique stamps :) Thanks again for the exchange and I'll post the other pics as soon as I can find them. I gotta start downloading everything to the same computer!

  7. Just a quick update note...

NEPAG can now be reached at both www.nepageocachers.com and www.nepageocachers.org (finally) since we were finally able to secure both domains :)

  8. ...a blurry shape of a coin's icon and tracking number...

Really? Having prepared quite a bit of the engraving art for that company I don't recall ever using a coin icon. I do know the quality of the image supplied is directly related to the quality than can be reproduced, but the image quality tends to be very good... (shown here at 4x magnification)

    sample.jpg

Their is some very fine surface texture that may make very fine detail hard to see, but you'd pretty much need a loop to spot it.

Here's a side by side comparison of both a geocoin and proxy after six weeks of side by side trashing in my pocket full of loose change, a pocket knife, money clip and assorted junk...

    coinvsproxy.jpg

A proxy that is tougher than a coin and has a clear image is not too bad an option for replacing an awol traveler I think.

  9. Wow... I guess I was always aware that it could happen, but I thought it would need a better reason than because someone simply decides to start over. Be that as it may...

Unless I'm misunderstanding the whole concept of caches and geocoins I thought the point in logging anything was to have a permanent record in MY PROFILE of what I've done while caching. I don't understand how someone wiping the slate clean on their coin should have any affect on MY DISCOVERY. For that matter I don't understand why someone can remove MY FIND from a cache either. It has no bearing on anyone but me what I've done. It occurs to me that the problem is in the system itself. My actions should be recorded to my profile, not to the items I run into while caching which appears to be how it's working currently. Why should anyone EVER lose a record on their profile of what they've done while caching? If this isn't resolved then it really begs the question of why bother ever logging any find or cache? If my log is only good until someone else decides to remove it then why bother?

Understand what you mean by this.

BUT... consider the fact that if something is changed, such as deletions, in essence (previous) action or device never existed. Long story made short, your action as a history of the device (be it a cache, TB or geocoin) is eradicated.

That is why caches are archived and not simply erased.

There are many terms that could be used to describe the actions of somebody who deletes logs, etc. en mass. For the most part, none of those terms would reflect favorably on the person who did that. Some just don't understand or "get it" -- you have to live with that fact.

Ummm... no? Just because a new action has occured, it doesn't mean I haven't taken part in some action in the past. I have had great memories including stories, photos, etc. all wrapped up in a log on a geocoin that I carried on a mission more than 2,000 miles. Just because a few years down the road someone sells that coin doesn't invalidate that I have a personal investment in the time and energy taken to record my experience. I recorded the experience for me, not just the coin owner. The log belongs to me as much as it belongs to the original owner (be it cache or coin).

Which brings me back to the original point. The logs are supposed to be personal recordings of your personal involvement in the world of geocaching. Giving anyone else the ability to eradicate those logs (for any reason) makes the whole point of creating the logs moot. It wasted effort if you can't guarantee they'll exist twelve months from now. ;)

  10. Wow... I guess I was always aware that it could happen, but I thought it would need a better reason than because someone simply decides to start over. Be that as it may...

  11. Check out GxProxy if you want something that can last out in the elements. Frozen Buns runs it and is great to deal with.

    GxProxy

Does GxProxy address the fact that it's only at best a reasonable facsimile of the coin? I'm trying to find a way for it to not get stolen, also not destroyed by angry Proxy finders. I have all these available Tracking Numbers just itching to be released (they were all stolen and I think it's good therapy for me to get them back into the game -- so I restore some power over those thieves).

Is it important that it looks kinda like the original? Is it even worth attempting? My theory is that a stolen Travel Bug's infinitely replaceable, because the item's coveted and the tag's thrown away -- but that maybe a stolen Geocoin's still out there, still on display someplace. If so, the original coin may even accidentally be logged anytime. That's why there are separate Proxy threads: Geocoins are weird.

To answer the first question, yes, GxProxy is highly aware that a proxy is a facsimile of the coin and encourages people creating proxies to state clearly that the item in the cache is just that. That being said, the quality of their proxies is so high that they are now making original geocoins using the exact same methods. These originals are actually holding up better than minted geocoins under stress testing as well. To top it off, these proxies can be created again and again no matter how many times they go missing.

If you want a proxy to travel without being destroyed your best bet is to tell people hunting that it IS a proxy right on the traveler's profile page. People with a beef against proxies most often state they are more upset with being deceived as to the true nature of the coin rather than the fact that it is a proxy.

I don't think it is necessary to look like they original, but that seems to be the favored method.

And yes, coins are "weird" :) They're beautiful, coveted, often intrepid and always appreciated. I'll take the real thing over a proxy any day, but when the real thing goes awol I'm not giving up on my mission. I'll make a proxy and say a prayer that the original shows up some distant day down the trail :)

  15. Whoot!!! I found a wonderful surprise when a plastic bag containing a mangled card showed up addressed to me from me. Santa's helpers must have had a hand in this coin's final destination - lol - because the envelope was in rough shape and torn wide open. Despite the rough handling the coin was still in there! What a great surprise for the week of Christmas :D Thank you so much to the mysterious elf behind these coins for such generosity in spreading the good cheer to cachers everywhere. Happy Holidays & Best Wishes for the New Year!

    Thank You

sorry if this is in the wrong section everytime I try new topic is the trading section I end up back in the discussion section.

The Round Tuit was made by the Geocoinstore.com website and was sold in 4 metal/enamel combos that I recall:

Shiny Copper / Red & Violet

    Antique Bronze

Shiny Gold / Orange & Green

Shiny Gold / Red & Violet

Is there one particular version you're looking for?

  17. I do not know the ins and outs of the laws so take what I'm about to say with a pinch of salt, but as I understand it.

Pathtags = anything goes for whatever reason = no copyright issues (I have several of my own, some with my own artwork, some with borrowed)

Geocoins = all coins approved by GC.com = very few licenced /trademark coins, as you have to get permission to use and image or likeness

and without wanting to put anyone off side  this is one time I'm so very grateful :anibad:

Yikes, this is why sooner or later there are going to be a lot of issues and heartache out there :( Both of these statements are unfortunately inaccurate.

PathTags, Wooden Nickels, SigMarx, Geocoins and any other form of personal signature do not allow freedom from copyright regulation. Some sites like 'Tags simply make you sign a contract that states you personally guarantee that you've secured permission for the use of all content putting any and all blame directly into your own lap if you use subject matter you don't own. Many, MANY have and sooner or later it's going to blow up.

TRACKABLE (at geocaching.com) geocoins go through a review process where a Groundspeak Lackey often catch items that are in direct violation of copyright and trademark violation. On occassion there are still a few that make it through the review process, but shouldn't have.

Back on topic though, with the incredible popularity of the Twilight series stories I wouldn't be surprised to see a coin made soon. In the meanwhile there are quite a few wolf coins out there and more than a couple bats, vampires, etc. coins as well. The pinned trade threads above have some of each :)

  18.

~Designs need to be in jpg or gif format

~Images should be no larger than 500kb (that’s front image 500kb, back image 500kb)

You might want to expand these caveats a bit.

500kb is extremely limited for a finished design (even just one side).

You might also want to include .pdf files since half the designers I know work in vector format (which is better for the mint production in the long run anyway).

    Just my 2 cents ;)

If I design a coin, I think that I could work within those specifications. I always design in vector, but my software easily converts to jpg. During the jpg conversion, I can specify the amount of compression, which saves memory. Thus, I can make a fairly detailed picture only 500kb. My assumption is that these files would be just for choosing winners and that the final designs would be resubmitted at higher resolution or as vector files.

I design in both vector and raster simultaneously myself and my finished designs are usually about 4-8MB per side. Scaling down to send an email is fine, but I didn't want to make any assumptions and I'd hate to see someone have to do all the work twice because they were working too small from the start. That and I've never, ever heard of someone submitting a .Gif for a finished design. Honestly, although I can convert to a .Gif, I don't know any graphics program that uses it as a basis since they're extremely limited in color and clarity so why start out a great idea with low expectations? They work great on the web, because they're tiny and simple, but we want to see the best possible results for something as huge as GCF! :D
