  1. Gave yours a "sweethearts" theme. Hope you like! Avatar version on forum grey:
  2. I recall posting this somewhere else with a laugh... I was hell bent on finding a cache in the snow. So I'm being trying to be smooth and avoid the muggles. I'm looking and looking and looking and now it's getting dark. So I go back in the morning this time and I'm looking... looking... no luck. So I start checking all the places I checked the first time but no go. As I'm about to give up, I kneel down to replace the rock I'm holding in my hand I notice a depression where it sat where I small cache might have once been hiding. Too bad I'm thinking as I go to put it back and suddenly see the cache hot-glued to the bottom of the rock! Doooh!
  3. I created an account when I began geocaching by myself in the beginning. After finding my first cache and telling my close friend everything changed. We immediately started caching together every weekend and I've never used my initial account since then. I suppose I could keep it for solo finds, but I haven't found the need since we're always caching together.
  4. While we're at it, how do do you delete an old account if you've changed your name?
  5. This might sound over simplified, but why not give part of the final coords in each cache as clues to a "Bonus Cache"? We ran into a similar version in our neck of the woods. The cache we found was basically a decoy (although a very good cache itself) and when we went to log in we found a note to the "real" or "bonus" cache which was quite a hike away from the first.
  6. On longer treks I take my camelbak (lots of water, plenty of swag), but on townie runs I picked up a military surplus map bag. It's sturdy, deep and stays flat on one side (small, about 8x10x4) to protect your papers, notes, etc. About 5-10 dollars at your local army/navy store and almost impossible to destroy with any amount of abuse.
  7. Traded a USA Geocoin for a New Mexico Geocoin and "took: measuring spoons and CD and left: F&tH Trackable Sigitem, Gold $coin, toys & a flashlight(w/batteries)."
  8. I found a fantastic match container at Gander Mountain. It's not their product so you should be able to find it anywher and it's "camo-green" and waterproof! Perfect for hiding just about anywhere without even having to disguise it.
  9. For specific software help, check out the forums for gps issues right below the getting started forums or try http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showforum=11
  10. Check out http://www.geocaching.com/about/finding.aspx first for a basic guide. To tell the truth, I just print out the coords and take the paper with me. I've never bothered to learn how to enter the coords in my gps yet. Also, if you click on the map it will bring up a mapquest map and you can zoom in to get a little better idea of where you're going to go. The FAQ section also has some great advice to get started. Good luck! btw: the GCQHJA is like a serial number of each cache. kind of like a big dewie decimal system to keep them all sorted out.
  11. I suggest having a little patience. I've been trying to address the same issue here on one cache that was abandoned almost two years ago and another that hasn't been addressed in quite a few months. The first no longer even has an account (I can't figure out why the cache is still listed) and the second is missing the first half of a multi cache. I have already been directed to my local, but he hasn't responded either. So I'm waiting....and waiting.... and now I'm just placing my own caches nearby. It's still a great area to visit so hopefully my local will finally look into it (or at least return an email) and adding some other nearby caches may just be a faster resolution.
  12. I'll submit particulars to my local, but it is a county museum showcasing the local history and it's contributions to the development of the nation. I'll have to ask about the "non-profit" part, but I think I recall it being an "suggested" donation and not a required fee. It would tie in excellently to several historical caches already in place in our area. Thank you for the input.
  13. We have a good idea for a multi-cache that would educate as well as entertain. The problem is, the basis of this cache would require visiting a small local museum that asks for a donation of a couple bucks for the tour. What's the call on this? Would you go? Is it fair to ask cachers to hand out a couple bucks to go on a cache? Has anyone else tried this? Need some suggestions, thanks
  14. There are a number of good choices available. Fox uses an Osprey pack that he has beaten to a ridiculous degree (bushwacking/mountaineering) for years and it holds up (and he breaks everything eventually). I'm using a camelbak (hey you have to carry water and first aid anyway) that doubles as my swag bag and has enough straps to attach rainpants, jacket, etc. You might checkout backpacker magazines new gear review. It just came out about a week ago and has some very good choices. I think I recall LL Bean's new daypack being very highly rated and only 59bucks.
  15. It's sometimes pretty discouraging to see the so-called "cache trash", but we have a fun outlook on it. We'll always trade up, but more as a consideration to the cacher who placed it out there. Someone went through a lot of trouble to bring us a cache and a good time getting to it. So don't think about the small price you pay in trading up. Think about how much you saved by not being at a movie instead and the memories and pictures that will be priceless to you in the future. Besides, a nice cache prize might make the difference for that noobie who decides to keep at it and eventually put out a cache of their own. So throw in a little something extra for the cache owner, they deserve it!
  16. You're kidding right? Please tell me that you didn't just suggest that sharing designs or ideas should stop altogether on these forums until approval is reached. I've heard some incredible statements made, but you have finally been the one to reach the top of the heap. Stop sharing ideas. The three words that this whole forum has now boiled down to. This is truly a sad, sad moment. Way to go.
  17. Faced with the decision to buy a whole bike or one more geocoin...
  18. Pretty simple, Fox is actually Fox's last name. He has a habit of bushwacking a straight line regardless of terrain and I always end up chasing him through it whether we're mountain climbing, hunting or now caching. It didn't take more than about 2 seconds to figure out what our name would be
  19. I've only been following the threads for a few months, but I've learned a lot about the people and the process that takes place here. I want to say congrats to the appeal and thank you to everyone involved. It shows what can be accomplished when everyone has an equal voice to be heard and is in turn respected for their opinions (even if disagreeable). All of you have been inspiring in your thoughtful debate and it reinforces the idea for me that this is more than just a game. It's a community, a way of life and an ideal.
  20. Thank you, that's exactly what I needed!
  21. I'm wondering if their is a way to encrypt a message automatically to cut and paste into a multi cache we're setting. I'd like to do it without anyone seeing the clues before reaching the multis. Any quick links?
  22. Thank you everyone. You've all been very helpful. We're going out in the morning to take down the coords. Thanks again
  23. As long as it is stated clearly that this can not be completed in one day then I think it's great. Fox and I are trying to setup one very similar. On a random trip to a historical society museum in a nearby town we were introduced to some great facts about how a number of our small local towns were once considered the "it" place to be on a global scale. We had no idea and we'd like to set it up so others would find out in a similar fashion. So yeah, we'd definitely be up for your idea!
  24. Definitely like the idea of a wireless internet link. How nice would it be to download in the field after finishing earlier than expected and get to put in just one more... just one more.... just
  25. I'm wanting to set a cache where you will have to go to multiple waypoints to find the final cache. Sounds like a multi to me. I don't, however, want you to find caches at each waypoint, but land features (how many boulders here=x, how many streams to cross=y) to add up and find final coords. Has anyone else encountered or setup something similar?
