  1. Well?

The category would only accept those buildings of a historical nature that contain some factual significance attached (an interesting story to tell, for example), such as a marker/placard, interpretive display, newspaper article, online historical database description, or some other tangible evidence of a building's dark and seedy past in which 'ladies of the evening' played host to those gentlemen with a particular inclination... B)

I'm thinking along the line of categories like Converted Bank BuildingsConverted Firehouses, Converted FactoriesRetired Prisons and Former Schools --  we would focus on those buildings that served a prior life as 'The Best Little Whorehouse in __(fill in the blank)___' but now serve a different life. The category would NOT include buildings that no longer exist -- only existing buildings will suffice.

There already exists a category for Nude Beaches so content could be potentially R-rated, but I would imagine most, if not all, submissions would be kept PG (we can make this a requirement).

This could be a fun and 'educational' category! :P

  2. This proposal has good potential but would require a well-written category description to specifically exclude (or include) certain buildings. As for limiting meeting halls to those of a historic nature... I came across a Firemen's Union Hall building (non-historic) in Seattle and was bummed that there is no category for these. So with that said, I would support this category idea. :)

  3. I didn't know this topic was discussed four years ago. I fully support it and I've come across many 'one-of-a-kind' sculptures in cemeteries that now I wish I had taken photos of. Oh well. I also agree that a five-year wait on posting a waymark of an individual is need out of respect for loved ones. I have this policy in my Graves of Unusual Deaths category.

  4. I recently read a post on the internet regarding man-made animal bridges to allow different types of wildlife (Elk, Bear, Deer, antelope, crabs, birds and many more) to cross busy highways or roads safely to the other side (most, if not all bridges are in migration paths). In addition to bridges, man-made structures of corrugated pipe or small, concrete waterways are also built under highways and roads to allow various wildlife to pass safely to the other side. I quickly perused through the list of categories and could not find anything that these animal crossings would fit into an existing category (Fish Ladders and Turtle Crossings are existing categories and would be excluded from this potential category.

Below are a few pictures I found on Google that highlight what I'm referring to. The simply-built corrugated metal pipes under roads are probably not worthy of category inclusion unless there was a nearby interpretive display that highlighted its purpose. My goal would be to find the more-substantial animal crossings like the earth bridges across highways and roads and other similar crossings. But I would be receptive to crossings of a smaller scale if they catered to a particular species (like a crab, a penguin or a duck) and had some additional information (such as a placard, sign, newspaper article, etc.) that accompanied them.

Any thoughts or opinions on these man-made structures that may or may not be a good candidate for a new category? I know they exist worldwide and I find them interesting and very eco-friendly. They are not that prevalent (I've come across only one in my neck of the woods in Oregon), so they wouldn't be so commonplace as to make them too mundane to waymark -- but could possibly be too limited to allow enough interest in them. I guess replies here will dictate which direction to go.

  5. Please let me/us know how it goes. I am particularly curious about whether a single vote (yours) might result in a promotion-by-default. In other words, if you are the only one to vote in that three day period, is the vote automatically a promotion?

No. Again, a 66% vote approval is required. A lone vote would fail.

  6. If only one of five officers is active in a group and if that one officer is not the leader, can that one officer promote a regular member to officer?

Unfortunately, the only way for the lone active officer to promote a regular member is to initiate a vote to promote, which requires 66% officer approval to pass. With the lone officer out of five being most likely the only vote, it of course, would fail. Just one of many downsides to Waymarking's category group processes. Your best bet is to message a Waymarking administrator like Waywizard and request their assistance.

    Good luck.

  7. I tend to vote against categories which WM's will not be global, as defined in the criteria for voting.

And that's what is WRONG with the criteria for voting as it currently stands. If everyone followed that mentality, then some truly great categories that currently exist only in the United States would have never come to fruition. Categories like the National Register of Historic Places, WPA Projects, Civilian Conservation Corps, all the many State Historical Markers and U.S. Benchmarks come to mind. Waymarking members really need to keep this in mind when voting on a new category proposal that isn't worldwide and mainly limited to one's own country.

I would be receptive to a Carnegie Medals category since I would find the history and details of the person(s) behind these medals very interesting and educational.

  8. I spent this past Saturday enjoying an activity I treasure more than any other: Benchmarking. The weather wasn't the greatest but Spring Fever was in the air and I just had to get out of the house and do something. After a few hours of logging a number of benchmark visits I came across a newer benchmark comprised of a metal rod under a hinged cover. I've logged many of this type over the years and never think much of prying open the metal plate with my hands, taking a few pictures of the metal rod inside and covering it up again. But THIS time... I was in for a surprise when I cracked open the cover and almost touched the equivalent of PURE TERROR (in my mind)... my fingers came within an inch of a nice, fat, BLACK WIDOW SPIDER! You'd think after all the geocaches I've found searching in every nook and cranny that wearing gloves should be the NORM. But N-O-O-O-O-O-O..... Visit my benchmark Waymark here for more pictures of this devilish arachnid. I also included a YouTube video of me trying to turn the black widow over onto her back to show off her bright red hourglass belly.

So my warning to my fellow Waymarking friends who may be into benchmarking like me: Be careful where you put your hands!

  9. I guess there's a little good news to come from all this urinary jousting between the leader and myself. I've received two e-mails, one from a geocacher who doesn't waymark and just happened to read this post and the other from a fellow waymarker. Both individuals appreciated the waymark and its significance. It's the first (and possibly only) Spanish Civil War monument to be dedicated in the United States. If this waymark ever gets approved, it would be a good contribution to the category. It's just too bad the leader acts more like a warmongering tyrannical dictator than a civil, mature and communicative diplomat. The war veterans for whom this category was created for would be truly disappointed.

  10. I give this a 6 out of 10 on the flame scale. That would rise to a 9 if the thread is step one towards another hostile takeover of a category.

But, I see that this category has four active officers, which is pretty cool and above average. Yay for them! That likely means that an orchestrated hostile takeover is not in the cards.

The naming convention in the category requirements says "Naming: Name of the monument or memorial, name of the war, city, state, country." What is the exact current name of the waymark at issue?

After several rounds of messages back and forth, sometimes it's a good idea to just step away and not worry about it. It sounds like the category officer has chosen to do that. I wasn't aware that would subject someone to discipline from Waymarking HQ, if there is such a thing.

There is no attempt for a hostile takeover of this category. I don't know where you got that from? I just want my waymark to be approved and it can't because the leader has chosen to abuse his membership privileges by declining my waymark for the sole reason that he doesn't like me. Currently, I've followed the naming convention requirement as stated in the category. You can view my submission for yourself:

    http://www.Waymarking.com/waymarks/WMVDPA

To continue to decline a waymark submission even though the submission abides by all the rules and requirements is an abuse of the membership privileges given to him and should NOT be tolerated.

  11. I recently tried to submit my one and only waymark into the Specific Wars Monuments and Memorials category. After a couple of days it was declined by the leader with a brief explanation to edit the title to reflect the naming requirements in the category. And THAT is where the real problems began.

After reading and re-reading the category description and THEN looking at previously-approved waymarks, I was left even MORE confused than before. If one visits this category, he/she will notice that all approved waymarks are a confusing mess of titles with dashes, titles with commas, the monument name in front, the monument name in the middle, etc. And so I re-submitted my waymark with a different title and with a note in the private message box pointing out this confusion and that the category doesn't adequately explain how to title a waymark AND pointing out that previously-approved waymarks don't all follow the category rules. Nine hours later I get another decline back with a very confusing message from the leader: "Is it too hard to type 3 letters instead of starting a flame? If others (I count 5, is that "many others"?) were approved like this, it was wrong. Asking you to edit was right. Besides, I am not the only officer in this category so although I can't tell if I did approve those 5 there are some chances I didn't."

After yet more confusion from reading the leader's reply message, I re-submitted my waymark for the THIRD time with another private message stating the leader's broken-English reply was confusing to me and that I am STILL requesting a VALID explanation or direction in what I need to do to make the title correct and get my submission approved. I also stated that this would be my ONE AND ONLY waymark in the category from here on out because of the attitude the leader has shown in dealing with my submission as well as stating that it was too bad it would be my only submission because as a former military veteran, I would have liked to have submitted more waymarks in the future. Hours later it was declined with NO EXPLANATION OR ANYTHING. So I re-submitted my waymark for the FOURTH time with a quick message saying as long as the leader declines my waymark submission without ANY VALID REASON OR EXPLANATION, I'll keep re-submitting it.

So far, the leader has declined my submission FOUR more times with NO EXPLANATION. NO REASON. NO NOTHING. I then sent a direct e-mail to the leader and let him know I've reported him to Groundspeak for abusive behavior as a leader of a category for declining waymarks without a proper or valid reason. Groundspeak admins can view the track record of his declines as proof of my argument. It's too bad no one can join the group and see the history of declines. Thus far, my submission is in limbo.

As a leader/officer of a number of categories, I would never decline a waymark just because I didn't like the person. If anything, I'd have another officer deal with the person I was having an issue with. It's unfortunate the leader of the Specific Wars Monuments and Memorials category has chosen this path in my regard.

Has anyone else had issues with the leader or officers in this category? If so, point them out here in the forum and maybe Groundspeak can do something about it. As it stands, the category is poorly written and confusing for even the most-seasoned waymarker to follow its naming convention and guidelines and basically not even worth the time submitting waymarks into. Unfortunately, I believe a lot of it has to do with all officers being European and not understanding how to communicate properly in English. Since this category covers monuments all over the world, getting an American waymarker promoted to an officer would be a good first step (at least in dealing with United States monuments). At least they could communicate the rules in a better manner.

    :tired:

  12. I recently noticed a category (Newsstands / Newsagencies) where the leader, saopaulo1, has been approving his own waymark submissions. I know from experience that this practice is HIGHLY discouraged in the Waymarking community. One good reason for this is there is no one else to police your submissions -- incorrect coordinates or misspellings might go unnoticed. Such was the case in one particular waymark from saopaulo1 where I caught major misspellings in the waymark title.

If you are an officer or leader of a category and have other inactive officers, the BEST way to keep from approving your own waymarks is to promote other active officers to assist in approvals. This will make the Waymarking experience more 'kosher'.

    Just my two cents.

    <_<

  13. Although well-intentioned, I feel this category is too narrowly focused on one particular subject matter as a 'symbol'. There are a myriad of other symbolic representations around the world that can be found as representing different meanings, much like the hourglass represents the passage of time. For example, a dove represents peace. A skull represents death. The yin and yang symbol represents Taoism. I feel a much broader/inclusive category would have been wiser, titled something like 'Symbolic Representations Around the World'. The problem with Waymarking is we get too focused on one idea and often forget the 'big picture' and then we end up with too many categories that could have fallen under one broad category idea.

    Other symbols around the world:

    Egyptian symbols (Staff of Osiris)

Pine cone (Greek and Roman religios symbol for everlasting or eternal life)

Serpent (symbol for fertility, good vs. evil, etc.)

Rod of Asclepius (associated with healing or medicine)

I could go on and list more symbols but I think you all get my point. Should I go ahead and create categories for each one of these symbols I see in sculptures, paintings, tombstones and other permanent places in my travels?

  14. My Peer Review comment: "After reading the forums, the officers of this new category proposal are correct. The current Unique Bird Houses category would not accept them per the category rules. BUT... No attempt was made to reach out to the leader of the Unique Bird Houses category to see if he would be willing to include dovecotes as an addition to the category. I'm all for new categories but when I see an opportunity to make an addition to an existing category rather than create a whole new category, I'd much rather see category additions (I like categories being inclusive then exclusive). For this reason, I'm abstaining from voting."

  15. I haven't read anywhere in this forum as to why these dovecotes can't be submitted into the existing Unique Bird Houses category? It seems these bird structures would complement the category very well. Why do the officers feel a new category is justified? That also hasn't been addressed in this forum. Until those issues are discussed, I cannot vote 'Yea' for the category proposal.

  16. I was going to suggest the Preserved Machines on Public Display category for these appliances but then read the category description and a sentence reads: "This category is not for agricultural, household or military equipment (there are existing categories for these types of equipment)." So where does a household preserved machine category exist in the category list? I couldn't find one and I'm pretty sure one doesn't exist. Which brings me back to your category proposal. I am one of the officers in the Preserved Machines on Public Display category and I honestly think your vintage Domestic Appliances category proposal COULD be an addition to that category because it fits in perfectly with the category vision and mission. If the other officers feel the same way, we could easily add an addendum to the category description to include vintage household/domestic appliances. I'd even be willing to promote you as an officer in the category and let you add that info to the category yourself, since you've gone to much trouble researching these appliances in the past year.

    Thoughts?

  17. ... and I'm afraid of where complaining about Waymarking is going to take it sooner than later.

Odd statement from someone who spends as much time complaining as you do.

(The bold above is mine, not that of Manville Possum.)

    Keith

I mostly complain about the hijackers here that act like the site is unusable unless they are part of the leadership.

Please Mr. Waywiz, crown me king, I want to be leader. :anicute: You guys are funny. Waymarking don't work that way.

Ya' know Keith, I still enjoy following Waymarking, even if I don't take part by posting pictures anymore. And it was no so much as the site, but it's the people that made Waymarking a bad experience for me. :(

Thus far, Manville Possum is doing a great job at making Waymarking a negative experience for all involved because of his immature comments and behavior ("Hey, everyone, I made a Disgruntled Waymarker group!"), paranoiac replies to new posts ("Waymarking is a conspiracy by Groundspeak for a select few!") and general lack of respect for anyone who is trying to keep the Waymarking community active and viable (Please Mr. Waywiz, crown me king, I want to be leader").

If I notice dormant/stagnant categories that I am submitting into haven't had active officers in weeks or months, at least I try to take the steps to make them active again. If someone else besides me were to take those steps, great, at least the mission here is to keep the Waymarking community active, whether it be me or someone else. This is something lumbricus has done in the past and for which people like BK-Hunters and myself are doing now. We see a problem and we are only trying to fix the situation at hand.

Then we have to put up with a naysayer like Manville Possum who enjoys wallowing in his own stench of paranoiac nonsense and spreading his vitriol to the rest of the Waymarking community. He also can't seem to leave as leader of a category he created because he doesn't trust anyone to take it over and would rather let the category go dormant and reject any new submissions into that category. Immaturity at its finest.
