  1. While it's not in the same category as an R8, the GeoXH is a dual frequency receiver, and can connect to a VRS network.
  2. The last two I submitted (found on the 14th, but I think I submitted them on the 15th) have shown up.
  3. Because everyone just has 6 grand laying around. I was just saying it's cheaper than a new car, not that it's actually inexpensive.
  4. They're not really that expensive, a Trimble GeoXH is less than $6000 and will do real-time 30cm with the internal antenna and 10cm with an external one.
  5. It's a tile probe, I'd like one too.
  6. I'm not sure if this is just a temporary side-effect of the maintenance they did over the weekend or what, but for now, you need to change the "www" to "nweb": The original address http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/ds_mark.prl?PidBox=KG0657 returns an SQL error, http://nweb.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/ds_mark.prl?PidBox=KG0657 works fine.
  7. I found something somewhat amusing this afternoon: The witness marker for the azimuth mark for KG0718 was missing its post, the sign was just jammed into the ground right next to the mark: And a while back, when I parked in the entrance to a field to go find the azimuth mark for KG0717 I noticed something furry in the field. Turns out it was a very, VERY dead Coyote (posted tiny as to reduce the gross-out factor):
  8. Yes, use NGS»GPX. The link to v2 is right below the "NGS»GPX v3" title.
  9. Or using the wrong coordinate format, DD MM SS.ss instead of DD MM.mmm for example.
  10. My PN-40 has 2.8 on it, and power saving mode was off. If I move it enough, (like swinging it over a foot or so,) the position will jump, but simply shaking the GPS on a small scale doesn't really have an effect.
  11. This is more of an observation than anything as I'm not entirely sure if it's really a bad thing or not (other than that I'd like the option to enable or disable it.) The blue track is my 60Cx, the orange my PN-40, and the grid is 1 meter/line. The track log was set to 1 second on both units, and it ran for almost 10000 seconds. Both units were sitting on the edge of the table in my apartment, about one foot apart, and both had good reception, including a solid WAAS lock. The 60Cx track shows the expected wandering from being indoors with multipath issues, but the PN-40 track just sits there barely moving.
  12. Just checked, and it will work with any of the coordinate formats, you just have to type them in in a certain way. For example, if your GPS is set to hdddºmm.mmm', and it reports your position as N 37º16.102' W 100º34.131' you would enter 37 16.102 -100 34.131 on the http://wap.geocaching.com page. Just use a space to separate degrees, minutes, and seconds, and use a negative sign for west longitudes and south latitudes.
  13. Go the Main Menu page on the GPS. Select Setup. Select Units. Select Position Format and hdddºmm.mmm' That will make the displayed positions use the same format as is standard for Geocaching.
  14. ...As a side note.. I am working on a new version. Honest. It will give ya'll much more power over the created-GPX files, so folks like John and them can better import information that they want then trying to find an old corner marker that's 400 years old. Just curious, will the new version allow one to strip out the PID header that's at the beginning of every line of the full datasheet? It's a bit of a pain to read the datasheets on my PN-40 because of all the PIDS scattered randomly across the text when it wraps the text to fit the display.
  15. If you're certain that's the right area, you might try the area under and around that little tree because, as dixiedawn pointed out, it's marked as not suitable for satellite observation.
  16. Just checked and bunch of mine just showed up on the NGS database sometime between last night and now, including some that were submitted yesterday.
  17. Very cool, thanks! I went by LAWRENCE today to do a quick check of the area and the field looks like it hasn't been cultivated for a while now, it's just old wheat stubble and weeds. To my great disappointment I didn't find a jug sitting on the surface. Time to get a 3 ft probe I guess...
  18. Has anyone ever found one of those really old marks where the surface mark has been lost but, hopefully, the jug or bottle has sat undisturbed several feet under? I know people have found bottle RMs, but this would be finding a bottle without any references beyond the coordinates and a GPS. The stations that I'd like to try some day are: KG0688 - LAWRENCE KG0688 - LAWRENCE 2 KG0656 - KILL CREEK They're both only one county over and are relatively close to roads which is what made spending some time looking for them look at least slightly reasonable. The original LAWRENCE seems to be placed in 1890 (was recovered in 1897, but is listed in USGS Bulletin 122, the other two appear to be from 1897. KILL CREEK and LAWRENCE 2 are both first order stations too, so hopefully the coordinates are pretty good. Also, LAWRENCE 2 has a precise distance and azimuth to the original LAWRENCE, so finding it would (hopefully) find the other.
  19. I'm not sure if this is exactly what he meant, but I wouldn't want my GC.com logs automatically submitted either as they're not written in a formal manner. I wouldn't submit a report to the NGS saying the weather was nice, or the mosquitoes were horrible, or whatever, but I'd not have a problem saying that on the GC.com log.
  20. Went back out there this afternoon, and yep, it's set in a rough lump of concrete instead of the normal smooth topped post. It was also clearly multiple feet below RM 3 instead of just half an inch lowers as the datasheets would indicate.
  21. It's about halfway between that cover and the culvert under the road, right in the lowest part of the ditch.
  22. I'll try that first. Didn't want to submit a recovery to the NGS without knowing for sure.
  23. I'll go back up there some time with a couple of yard sticks and use my camera and a bubble level to do a rough leveling with RM 3. There are some newer looking sewer covers in the ditch, so it's quite possible the ditch has been worked on. The Google street view shows the ditch and the hangar in the background where RM 3 is.
  24. Spent an afternoon driving around looking for graves with my mom (for findagrave.com) and picking off the odd benchmark here and there. The last one we found was KG0551, PHILLAIRPORT. It was under the bottom of a roughly two foot deep hole in the bottom of a ditch, which is making me wonder if it's actually the surface mark or if that's gone and the mark we found was an underground mark. The depth on the data sheet has changed from flush when monumented in '50 to 4" in '85. Also, all the other 1950 marks I've found in the area have at least a mild patina, this one is very shiny and has almost no patina. Here are some larger photos:
