  1. one more test,,, 1.....2......3...over
  2. I agree that on the surface, it seems a bit scary that a thief may get your home address if he steals such an item. Plus, a thief who breaks into a car can get your name and address quite easily by grabbing insurance and registration. Your address isn't what they're after, and such fear is misplaced. My address is published by the phone company and distributed everywhere, for free, to anyone who asks. And I highly doubt that owning (or have owned in this case) a GPSr makes me a bigger target to a thief. Now, if I leave an empty HDTV box outside of my house, leave all the lights off and the front door wide open, THAT would make me a target. Zactley!!!!! Any thief could follow me home from the shopping center, look at the post on the front porch and get my address. They wouldn't even have to steal my GPSr to get it!!! And, my Boxer and German Sheppard would certainly not be to "Happy" if they tried to break into my house when I'm not home!
  3. I have a cache in my front yard. I placed it there with the sole purpose of having our local cachers come by and say hello. The love it...I've met alot of people that I've only know by their logs over the last few years. It's been great for me, but I'm sure it's not for everyone. I put in the description that this cache is off limits before 7:00 AM and after dusk on any day. I don't want people snooping around with flashlights,,,,that might be a problem. If I go way on vacation, I simply will put a temp disable on it while I'm gone...simple as that. If you want to do it...just do it..it's up to you.
  4. I just tell them I'm looking for the African Bee's and ask them if they are the ones who reported it. They leave quickly!
  5. Not bad! The only concern that I would have is with the four seasons that your neck of the woods has, it might stick out pretty loud in the summer and winter months. I wonder if you could "invent" a sock type covering (maybe from a thick fishnet) that you could premake with the different color of leaves for the season and simply change it each season. That might be a fun project to look into this winter for ya! Good Luck and a Good Start!
  6. Try this link to the Texas Geocaching page: http://www.txga.net/cache_docs.asp#mini
  7. GeoDang....Use whatever you like. Seems silly to argue over something like a simple term for your hobby. I think the GeoGrouch should worry about alot more important things in life! I vote for a big Yes, use Geoplant if you like!!!
  8. If water gets in, you might consider switching to the film canisters that have a lid that snaps into the lower part. They are much more water resistant. Excellant Suggestion!! In fact, I have some of those type of containers in my shop so I'll replace it with one the next time I go up there and before the rainy season starts here in SoCal. Thanks!
  9. I put this one out last week. I used a trailer hitch cover (WalMart $1.99) as an outer cover for a 35mm canister. I qlued a small block of wood to the bottom of the container then put a nail into that to act as an anchor. I then used camo material to cover the trailer hitch over. That will help protect the canister from rain. I then placed it along a windy twisty road up in the hills. It's a nice little cache, well received. The bottom picture is of the cache in-place but it was taken a pretty close range. The bugger is really tuff to spot when your searching for it.
  10. I was looking for a micro 35mm cache one day recently in a city park. The cache was somewhere inside of or around a huge tree. I was just about to give up looking when a man with a metal detector walked over to me and asked me very politely if I was looking for something. We had a nice little chat and I told him all about GeoCaching. The conversation turned to his metal detector and what it could do. He took me over to another tree area and turned it on...he told me it would tell him exactly what the metal was it was detecting , coin...even what amount penny, nickle, dime, etc. ring, watch, beer tap, etc. In a moment he told me it just hit on a quarter 1" down and sure enough there it was! He said it would even detect plastic, but he never really tried it. So I suggested to him that we try for the little 35mm container around that tree I couldn't fine. He turned it one, ran it all around and got a beep beep inside a hole/knot about 3 feet off the ground. I put my gloves on and reached inside the hole and there it was the PLASTIC container. It was great, and I got a Find!
  11. I can't agree with that. I don't mind downloading maps, I can fit enough on the Quest even living in NJ and NY. The Quest 2 doesn't give you Mapsource, which is a big downfall in my opinion. For all that extra cost, it should give you the software. I have a Quest2 and I simply called Garmin Tech Support and they were more then willing to send me the Disk for Free! I use it to plan trips on my PC, then transfer them to the Quest2. If you want the disk, just call them, they'll send it to you. I know of other Quest2 owners that got theirs free to by calling Garmin.
  12. Your absolutely correct, I stand corrected. I set it to the off route, and sure enough there was the compass and directional arrow! I'll be dern!
  13. I use the Quest2 to autoroute me to the cache area, then use a Garmin 60 CSX to direct me to the cache. The Quest doesn't have a compass page that will point you to the cache, I'm not sure it would work very good for geocaching. The compass that it does have only works on the track back page, it will show you where you have been, not where you are going. It works great for what it was meant to do....driving directions!! I would not recomment the Quest for geocaching.
  14. When I hide a cache, I first determine where one can be hidden to meet all of the rules. Once I find that place I then go to the area and ask myself, where is a good place to hide this thing? I'll give you the coordinates and when your GPSr says are are there, ask yourself that same question. "Where would I hide it if it were me?" BINGO...your thinkin like a cacher now. You and your son will have alot of fun doing this! Start easy and get some finds. Have fun!
  15. I bought mine from this company just the other day. Does it really work as good as they say? YES!!!!! Do not hesitate to buy it. I had one on my 60C and when I upgraded to my 60CSX I made sure I paid the 9.95 to protect it too. I went out today and had to do some bushwacking when I got home the screen was all dirty but not a scratch on it. Alittle warm water on a cloth rag and it shinned right up. Love that protector!!!!
  16. I'm still trying to figure out TOTT. I see it in logs around here and I think it is some sort of reaching or grabbing device. Anybody know that one?
  17. If you use GSAK to transfer your caches to your GPSr you can run a canned filter called Last 2 DNF that will display all of the caches that had the last two logs as a Did Not Find. I run that filter then delete those caches before I transfer to my 60CSX and then to Cachmates. I get a cleaner list that way. Cheers,
