  1. Well, I did say... quote: I won't mention what the trick was - he asked me a number of questions before he suggested it, so it's probably not appropriate advice in all cases. ...But on your own head be it! 1) Fill the GPSr with fresh alkaline (not rechargable) batts. 2) Switch it on, and put it into simulator mode 3) Leave it switched on for about 13 hours On the GPS 2+ this took the batteries from fully charged down to just above three quarters on the meter. This apparently revitalises the memory battery, but doesn't always work - if it doesn't you'll need to get a new memory battery fitted. Techies - if this looks like bad advice, please don't flame me! I'm only passing on what the man at Garmin told me, and I did say it's probably not always appropriate advice Paul I came, I cached, I fell over in the mud
  2. quote: I wonder where the nearest cache is to the hospital.... Almost certainly "Cache for Questions" It's in a fairly pollen free area as well (no much long grass etc) Paul I came, I cached, I fell over in the mud
  3. quote:Originally posted by Omally: You wre _sober_? I was driving that night For the record it was a charity fundraising pub crawl: I used the slogan I'm the pretty fairy with the wand that goes 'flash'-get yer hands in yer pockets, and give us yer cash!. It was quite a successful evening, too. Paul I came, I cached, I fell over in the mud
  4. OK< so it's not a tutu, it's a fairy costume. But those ARE walking boots I'm wearing. I was young. And stupid. And (I regret to say) sober. Paul I came, I cached, I fell over in the mud
  5. Hey Omally! It may not be finished yet (and some of the colour scheme started my migraine off) but anyone who likes those authors is fine by me! Just a one thing...a couple of the picture links went to the BT Internet news page? Keep going, let us all know when there's some more content (but don't let it stop you caching)! Paul (Edited for spelling) I came, I cached, I fell over in the mud
  6. These radios are also available in huge quantities on EBay - that's where I got mine! In the US I notice geocachers who have these, generally keep them tuned to channel 2 while caching (unless using them for a specific purpose to communicate with other members of their own party or whatever). Is this something we could usefully copy? Or am I just looking for an excuse to carry an extra gadget while caching? Paul I came, I cached, I fell over in the mud
  7. quote: - what should it be called? From the way this thread has gone, I suggest a purely local association called Hampshire Associated Geocachers Getting Lots of Exercise. (For the small number of list members who seem to not recognise such things, I should point out that this is a joke). They told me there was a new cachepoint in town - imagine my disappointment when there was no log book! Paul I came, I cached, I fell over in the mud
  8. Without making it a blatant advert, I had to mention the following... On Monday I asked quote: My Garmin II Plus has started displaying the error message "Memory Battery Low". Anyone know if replacing this is a job I could do myself, or should I let the Proper Men at Garmin do it? And ConeDXF replied quote: You need to let Garmin change this for you. If you take it to their offices in Romsey, they will probably turn it round in 24 Hours, if you speak to them first, they may even do it while you wait. Well, I rang the nice man at Garmin, who could quite easily have told me to bring it in and charged me for a new memory battery. Instead, he told me a trick to try, and if that didn't work to let him know. It worked and at little cost to me (and no profit to Garmin, other than a happy customer) my problem is solved - well done Garmin! I won't mention what the trick was - he asked me a number of questions before he suggested it, so it's probably not appropriate advice in all cases. 9. quote:Originally posted by Team Blitz: I would like this thread to be a positive one: if you do NOT agree that we need a national association, then this is NOT the place to discuss that: please start a new thread. I agree, Paul: PLEASE could the naysayers take their comments to another thread... In five years time, there will be a national geocaching club of some sort: It may be no more than the "social committee" of the caching community, or it may be acknowledged with full "sport governing body" status, or it may be somewhere in between: The fact is that humans being what we are, we tend to form groups at the drop of a hat (see Maslow, for the psychobabble boffins!). Lost in Space said... quote: a) How do the officers, who "run" the organisation get elected? Good question: Email voting by members? Do we trust each other enough not to register with multiple addresses, especially if membership is free? quote:What should be the qualities of an elected officer? That they get elected: I'm involved in a number of voluntary bodies, and my experience suggests that the fewer rules on who can be elected, the better. Cache on, cache on, with hope in your heart... 10. While I'm not an expert on web law, I'd say don't worry too much, unless you've blatantly infringed someone's copyright. If you've got a reasonable degree of common sense, and weren't worried before you saw all the warnings, you're probably OK. The worst that is likely to happen is you'll get an email from someone saying 'Hey, it would have been nice if you'd asked us', or even 'Please remove this link'. As an aside - make it easy for visitors to your site to contact you by giving an e-mail address! If someone does get annoyed by something on your page, they're much more likely to be upset if you make it hard for them to contact you. Have a look at my site and take the links to the 'Paul's Favourite Pubs' page - in theory any of them could complain that I'd mentioned them without permission, but read what I've said about them and ask yourself if any of them are likely to complain. Final tip - give us all the link to your site and invite comments! Paul I came, I cached, I fell over in the mud

  12. Well, I skived off work early and did three caches (including one that's defeated me twice before) on my way home. And yes, it WAS a nice evening! I came, I cached, I fell over in the mud
  13. quote:Originally posted by Gaz, Suni, Jack & Kashi: The Clangers...now your talking. Well...making funny hooty/whistle noise anyway!!! "Flobble Lobble Lob" said Bill (Make up your own punchline) Paul I came, I cached, I fell over in the mud
  14. In agreement with the wise words of Lassitude, I would add that Caching is my hobby (or one of 'em ) and I don't expect doing my hobby to cost me nothing. Petrol, parking etc. are all part of the game (with the usual proviso that unusually high parking fees should be in the cache text so they don't come as a surprise). I'd probably not visit a cache in an 'entry fee' location unless I was interested in the location itself (e.g. I'd go to Bletchley Park but not Kew), but that's my choice. IMHO, to get annoyed about caches being in entry fee locations is like getting annoyed because your local cinema is showing a film you don't want to see... Cache on... 15. I have a theory that whenever adults discuss childrens' TV, sooner or later those Pugwash names will come up. Thanks to Omally for providing yet more evidence ! Where did you get the ringtone? Someone I work with has the nickname "Captain Pugwash" and I'm sure he'd be interested. Going caching this evening (just to keep us slightly on topic!) Paul I came, I cached, I fell over in the mud
  16. Sounds like it's going to be a good event...I can't wait! I came, I cached, I fell over in the mud
  17. quote:Originally posted by Huntnlady:(snip) Until then, I want to leave a piece of myself (snip). Gosh. And which cache is that going to be in? I came, I cached, I fell over in the mud
  18. quote:Originally posted by Rockratgirl:I'd been hoping to do it myself but now I think I will throw it open to someone far more technically minded/patient! Don't be put off, Sam: My website was written using Windows Notepad and with an "HTML for Beginners" book in one hand (OK, I can't remember what the book was called, but it's something like that). I bought the book from Maplin, and if they haven't still got it in stock, they'll have something like it. At the very least, put something together: If you then decide you don't like it, that's the time to call in someone else! But there are only a dozen or so basic instructions in HTML and once you've grasped those, it's fairly easy. Of course, once you understand these basics, that's the time to look at the source code of other people's websites to find out how they got that effect that you like... (Edited to take out the unintentionally patronising bit) I came, I cached, I fell over in the mud
  19. Hope this isn't too off topic - if it is, sorry to the moderator, and please strike it from the record! Anyway, my query is - are there any geocachers going to the New Wine conference at the Bath and West Showground in July/August? (For those wondering, NW is nothing to do with either geocaching or booze...it's a Christian Family Conference!) I came, I cached, I fell over in the mud
  20. quote:Originally posted by poikaa & butterfly: Now what do we do with the refigerators and couches we find? Errr...find a REALLY BIG cache to leave 'em in??? I came, I cached, I fell over in the mud
  21. Well, I leave a card because I noticed other people had done it, and thought "That's a good idea" I donormally do a 'proper' trade as well though... I came, I cached, I fell over in the mud
  22. Paul and Judith said in another thread: Oh yeah - handy hint for finding caches:- If you have fiddled with the GPSr to see what else it can do before setting off on a days caching, make sure you set the datum back to WGS84 - otherwise you end up in someones garden! I would add: Make sure that the OS map you put in your bag, is the one that covers the area you're going to . Anyone else willing to share those red-face moments with us all? I came, I cached, I fell over in the mud
  23. Best news I've heard all week. Oh, so THAT's what the sand was for...err, sorry guys... I came, I cached, I fell over in the mud
  24. Anquet Maps probably will (it does to most GPSrs), but it won't take waypoints downloaded from your GPSr. So many caches, so little time...
  25. Dodgy Dave has already said that he could only moderate (if at all) until he goes back to work, so perhaps he's the best person to do it - then if we wind him up too much, he will have the opportunity to "retire with honour" We don't have a moderator, and so far only DD has offered: I say, go for it Dave! So many caches, so little time...
