I live down here in Bear land and but I would love to come! -Erin As others have already indicated, the WGA campout is open to all geocachers. All we ask is that once we post a page for the event you sign up ahead of time. Then if you do sign up, please show up. We put a lot of thought and effort into optimizing our events for the persons who sign up. That's why we like to have a good idea of who will be there. We hope to see you there!
  2. The Wisconsin Geocaching Association is happy to announce the dates and location of the 2003 WGA Geo-Campout. Make sure you set aside May 16 - 18 at High Cliff State Park. We have reserved two large group sites for Friday (16th) and Saturday (17th) nights. As planning progresses, we will post more information at the WGA website: http://www.wi-geocaching.com
  3. quote:Originally posted by Harrald: quote:Originally posted by kbraband:This was a nice change-of-pace cache when we found it more than a year ago. <> Since the cache was placed on 2/8/2002 it would be tough to find it over a year ago. Oops. Good catch. My mistake. We found it last February. Seems longer ago than that.
  4. I'll put in a plug for Wisconsin as a great geocaching state. For one thing, there caches hidden in great scenic areas that require nice hikes. Add to that the fact that many cache-placers here seem to relish going above and beyond the call of duty in terms of the quality of containers, cache items, and in the creativity of their caches.
  5. This was a nice change-of-pace cache when we found it more than a year ago. The container was very cleverly decorated. The fact that you had to figure out which business to go in made it fun. I don't think the present business owner should be able to name it after his business. Too commercial and too easy. Definately not in the spirit of the original geocache.
  6. But what if I keep posting replies to your replies? No slinking!
  7. It's not considered good forum manners to post the same log in multiple locations. You should have found the best spot for your post and left it there only. This one hardly seems appropriate for the Midwest forum.
  8. A cache hunter before me posted that he fell and left some of his DNA on the mossy rocks at a cache called Ledge Hammer. When I arrived I found his DNA had started to grow on the rocks and created a giant likeness of his head. Pretty weird.
  9. For a moment there I thought you were going to raise a complaint about my HOW low CAN YOU GO? locationless cache: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=21187 I agree it's not cool at all to log your own caches. Beyond that, what I may consider cheating is another person's "cleverness" so we all need to let it roll off our backs and not get too uptight about it. Having said that, I do enfore the rules of my locationless cache to the best of my ability. I have had to delete some postings when people did not follow the rules. And who do they blame because they did not follow the rules? Me, of course.

  11. My OIT Trailside cache has 13 stages because I designed it to be hunted via bicycle while following a specific trail. No one has found it yet, so I'm starting to wonder if 13 is about 11 too many.
  12. quote:Originally posted by MrGigabyte:Regarding valuable caches, you have to see the http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=42391 by Team KFWB GPS. The latest has about $2000 worth of goodies in it. Their caches have brand new GPS units plus tons of cash. Usuall $50 to $1000. I have found 4 of their caches and they are all excellent. I am surprised more cachers are not watching these. Yes, but that's $2000 Canadian so isn't that about $15 U.S.? (Just kidding! Just kidding! I love Canada!)
  13. The Wisconsin Geocaching Association also has one available at its website: http://www.wi-geocaching.com
  14. It's amazing that all I have to do is sit at my computer, plink on a few keys, and because of it people will drive for miles to go to the location I specified. What a power rush! Um... forgot to mention, I drove out of my way to find the previous Photo II location just because someone else typed in the coordinates. I was once the puppet. Now I am the puppeteer.
  15. This summer, after meeting with Sue Black of the Wisconsin DNR to help them work on a geocaching policy, Sue suggested that I write an article for the Wisconsin Parks and Recreation Association quarterly magazine "Impact". That article has now been published. You can view jpg images of the two pages at these links: http://www.rocketink.com/WPRAarticlepage1.jpg http://www.rocketink.com/WPRAarticlepage2.jpg Hopefully, this will take us a step further toward getting policies in place for all parks in Wisconsin. If you haven't already done so, please make sure you ask permission from state and local park managers before placing any new caches.

  18. Nice publicity for geocaching. However, I can't let it go without a comment on the ethics of the story. It's apparent this reporter has no qualms about setting up parts of his story for comic effect -- that is, coaching participants to say certain lines and do certain things. Most TV journalists consider that taboo. The station probably justifies it by saying this is a "feature" piece and not hard news. Still, once they start down that slippery slope it's hard for viewers to know what is real and what's not on their newscasts.
  19. This will be my third winter for geocaching activity. I love it. No bugs. No poison ivy. No 90 degree temps. Good reception. My GPS unit works fine in the cold, although the rechargable batteries don't last nearly as long as they do on hot days. Bring a couple extra sets batteries along and keep them warm in your pocket.
  20. eMap has the geocache and geocache found icons if you have the latest firmware
  21. I agree with Priebe's Pride. The same type of coordinates used on land will work to find a spot out on a lake. What's up with that talk about a special naval GPS?
  22. quote:Originally posted by Omicron:Hey All...been doing some searching, and I can't seem to find any underwater caches. Is this because they don't exist, or am I just being dense? I'm looking for any cache that would require scuba diving to find - I suppose snorkeling would be OK as well, but I would prefer one where diving would be a requirement. Just curious if you know of any of these caches in Wisconsin! There's one in southern Wisconsin called "Under Where?" I have not been to it, but many have. It was named a WGA cache of the month. It's out of comission at the moment, but should be back soon. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=25257
  23. I hope I didn't miss this discussion somewhere, but today I noticed the caches page logs no longer list the number finds people have. I miss this feature!
  24. In the message forums at Paddling.net people talk about, among other things, using GPS for paddling navigation. I bet you could get an answer if you post there.
