  1. My favorite Indiana park is Brown County State Park, because of this experience.
  2. Trying not to derail the topic but... I wonder if this group is associated with state-level Parks and Recreation associations. I am scheduled to speak about geocaching at the Wisconsin Parks and Recreation Association (WPRA) annual conference on Nov. 4. The topic will follow the lines of my Fall 2002 article in the WPRA magazine. (page 2 of article)
  3. Check out the geocaching web ring. As of today there are 95 sites on geocaching listed here.
  4. I'm still alive and kicking. Also using the ID "IowaAdmin" these days, and "active2gether" when I go geocaching with my fiance.
  5. Seems like one aspect to this is being overlooked. When a geocache gets archived, it doesn't necessarily mean the owner no longer wished to maintain it. It may have been located in an inappropriate place such as on private property, a dangerous location, a sensitive natural area, or park land where the manager does not allow geocaching. I know of lots of old geocaches that fit into these categories.
  6. Yup, the WGA puts on some of the best geocaching events anywhere. IMHO
  7. The last I heard, the WGA Geo-Campout event cache had over 1300 finds for the weekend. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...60-8be2ade11120
  8. How about hearing from those who geocache with road bikes? Here are ours parked along the Elroy-Sparta trail in Wisconsin while we searched for Tunnel Trail: And here's a shot as I looked for Farm Fresh Brown Eggs:
  9. The Spell of the Yukon by Robert Service "I wanted the gold, and I sought it; I scrabbled and mucked like a slave. Was it famine or scurvy - I caught it; I hurled my youth into a grave. I wanted the gold, and I got it - Came out with a fortune last fall, - Yet somehow life's not what I thought it, And somehow the gold isn't all. There's gold, and it's haunting and haunting; It's luring me on as of old; Yet it isn't the gold that I'm wanting, So much as just finding the gold. It's the great, big, broad land way up yonder, It's the forests where silence has lease; It's the beauty that thrills me with wonder, It's the stillness that fills me with peace." http://www.rocketink.com/geocachi.htm
  10. I experience this same problem. The solution that I was given: First, make sure that HotSync Manager is running. To start it, go to Start/All Programs/Palm Desktop/HotSync Manager. Once you have HotSync manager running, if you still don't have any luck try this: 1. open Windows Task Manager by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Delete, 2. In the Processes tab, look for a couple of programs that may be conflicting with COM1. They will have your name or your computer name as the user name -- NOT "System". The processes that I end that seem to do the trick are SERVIC~1.EXE and HKCMD.EXE. Click on these processes and then click on the "End Process" button.
  11. Here's the group representing Wisconsin Geocaching Association, at the start of our cleanup in Milwaukee along the lakefront trails. 4/17/04
  12. In Wisconsin we have a Cache of the Month contest, followed by a Cache of the Year. It gives geocachers a chance to give feedback about their favorite caches and give the cache owner a pat on the back.
  13. Here's the group at our Wisconsin Geoaching Association CITO event, held in downtown Milwaukee along the lakefront trails. We began with a breakfast then migrated over to the trails for 3 hours of cleanup work. One of our members (Trudy & The Beast) hid 7 temporary geocaches early in the morning and brought the coords to breakfast, so we had some fun as we worked.
  14. Why is it that anyone who has more finds than we have is obsessed, while anyone with fewer finds is inexperienced?
  15. "Well slap my butt and call me a billy goat!"
  16. I'll suggest this one in Wisconsin. Most everyone who has done it has raved about it. It's not a puzzler. Not a multi. Not a pill bottle. Not a virtual. Not a 0.1 mile walk from the parking lot. But if you're looking for a beautiful hike with an exceptional view at the end, this is it. (In the interest of fair and full disclosure, it's mine.)
  17. WiFI is great. So are cell phones that work as data connections.
  18. Alas, I don't think there is such a cache in Wisconsin but I admire you for asking the question. That's the kind of cache I would enjoy hunting too. As an alternative, may I suggest my Flambeau River Rapids cache. If you seek it by canoe you can camp overnight nearby. In Gov. Dodge State Park I have a multi-hour hike cache called The Shocking Truth About Henry that offers a great view once you reach the coordinates.
  19. I recently saw the WW II movie "Hell is for Heroes" on a cable TV channel. There's a scene in which one of the American soldiers sneaks into no-man's land on his belly dragging an ammo can connected to a wire. Night caching!
  20. I just discovered this posting saying you accidently found your first cache. Congratulations! You found the cache I placed during a canoe camping trip. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Be sure to check out the Wisconsin Geocaching Association web site at www.wi-geocaching.com ~Ken
  21. Does anyone have a downloadable MapSource or other Garmin compatible CD map of southern Italy that you would loan to me to load into my GPSR for an upcoming trip? We'll be driving and hopefully doing some geocaching.
  22. We should have checked the thickness of the ice first. This was the last time I saw GrouseTales. I would have tried to pull him out but hey, I had a cache to find!
  23. Wow, I hope you were kidding! Burying? In a National Park? OK, OK, I just got it. Whew!
  24. Here's mine. My finds in Ohio and Indiana don't appear for some reason unknown to me.
  25. Photo of active2gether (aka kbraband, aka WGA2) at the now-archived Deer Mountain virtual cache in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado.
