  2. We don' need no steenking badgers!! Could someone explain to me how the Fox Hunt worked? It seems that there was some actual chasing going on-- how did the geocachers track the fox?? "Nothing says 'I love you' like the gift of a spatula."

  4. Well, I'm glad *you're* laughing: I was on the verge of a Depends moment out there! Still, that was one of the best caches I've ever been on.

  8. would you dadgum equestrians get off your horses and kick their crap *off* the road, please?? I'm tired of dodging road apples when I walk or ride the lovely back roads. Well. I feel much better now. Thank you.

  10. ... and I think we can learn a little about not painting a group with a broad brush. I am trying to put together a multi-cache and one spot I'm trying to find is a cave that will allow a cache. I am supportive of caver's secrecy because it doesn't occur to most people that a cave can be a fragile environment. "It's stone, right? Stones are tough!" Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I contacted my local grotto and put the question to them "Where can I find a cave that might be okay for geocaching?" They very graciously replied "Try the Tytoona Cave." Now, this was not them giving permission, it was just a suggestion on their part. Clearly, cavers are as diverse a bunch as geocachers! I think we should allow the first caver his hissy fit. He cares about caves and will do whatever he thinks is necessary to protect them. However, I think we should also nudge our local grottos to reach some sort of agreement on this particular cave: is it for the public or no? If yes, how can geocachers work with cavers to find solutions that work for both of us? If not, get a lock on the place. Also, if we're that keen on caving, perhaps we could push for some "beginner caves," sturdier sites that could stand a little more traffic. I should also note that when I contacted the grotto, I specified that the cave coords would not be posted to the web, but further along the line in the multi-cache. Perhaps we could recommend that the cacher "disguise" this cache a bit? Change the name and bury the coords in a multi-cache? I think we have an opportunity here to show non-cachers that we can be thoughtful folk who just want to enjoy the outdoors-- not hooligans bent on marking or trashing territory.
  11. "Turkey season safety guidelines from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, National Wild Turkey Federation and Realtree Outdoors: Avoid wearing red, white, blue or black. Those are colors associated with turkeys and can make you a target for the unwary hunter. Dress in total camouflage, because a partially camouflaged hunter runs the risk of being mistaken for game by a careless person who shoots at movement — even at white hunting socks. If you don't have a face mask, use face paint. Put it on your ears and hands, too. Camouflage your gun, because blued steel looks black from a distance. Select a tree wider than your shoulders and back for the perfect hunting setup location. This will prevent accidental wounding from behind. If you spot another hunter, do not signal with your turkey call, wave your hands or make any sudden moves. Speak loudly and clearly to let the other hunter know where you are. Use a hunter orange vest and/or cap while on the move. Most turkey hunting accidents happen when the victim is moving. Never assume you are the only hunter in the area. If you take a gobbler, retrieve the bird quickly and get out of the woods as soon as possible. Wrap the turkey in hunter orange — so that other hunters won't aim for it — and wear an orange vest and cap before traveling from the woods." Maybe I'll just hunt urban micros this fall! Simply stepping out of your car seems like a dangerous activity around here once the season opens.
  12. within 100 miles of 16870 (Port Matilda, PA). I have soooooo much work to do. Sigh. crr003, where are you that you have only TWO in a hundred mile radius???

  14. ...but I'd be concerned about people starting a game of Keep-Away! "You want your walking stick back, CYBret? I stashed it at N 40° 36.103 W 078° 13.095-- hope you get there before someone else grabs it!" Actually, now that I think about it, sounds like there's a cool game there...
  15. "On my last cache hunt, I picked up this neat rubber chicken. A few weeks ago it was a 'splash hamburger' pool toy. Looks really authentic. I love the Gag stuff." That just made me go and spend $30 on cache nuggets at Archie McPhee's! Thanks a lot!!

  17. Including street names, where applicable. Too many times the hunt for the starting point exceeds the hunt for the cache. That said, perhaps I'm missing the point of the game and we're *supposed* to spend all that time looking to start the hunt "a few miles SE of Smithtown, park at the pull off before the park entrance" I read the description but it's usually the logs that decide it for-- what the heck am I saying? Is there a cache out there I *wouldn't* seek!? NO! You post the coords, I'll go looking. But please: Tell me where to start!

  19. ...okay, I know we haven't really talked about this but you all seem like such an adventurous group it seemed a possiblity that *some* of you may want to hit that old stand-by of caving, J-4. But please don't. I got the following from the Nittany Grotto website (http://www.clubs.psu.edu/NittanyGrotto/) Hi All, The status of J-4 has changed. A number of weeks ago, I was informed that the new owners of J-4 were talking about closing the cave. A general announcement to that effect was not made at that time, because nothing concrete had taken place. Now the first shoe has dropped. The new owner, Graymont (PA) has posted no-tresspassing signs on the route to the cave. They have also installed a new gate to replace the cable gate across the access route to the quarry. And they have asked that the Grotto not visit the cave. (In their minds at the present, all cavers and the Grotto are one and the same.) Currently the cavers have permission to participate in the upcoming Mock Rescue scheduled for the cave. But that is a one-time permission, and only for the purposes of training. We respectfully ask that you abide by the no-tresspassing signs, and that you respect the owners request to not visit the cave. Please pass the word to others. Also please note, that the current change in status was not a result of the scheduling of the Mock Rescue. A few of us Nittany Grotto members are considering how to best react to this situation. We have been sharing ideas. If you would like to offer constructive ideas, please send them to me. Perhaps there is still a way to save the cave from permanent closure. Keith D. Wheeland kwheeland@home.com ***************************************** And if you've read this far, *have* you ever gone caving?
  20. ...on the cache page that seekers may have an audience. That way people can decide for themselves whether this trips their "weird-o-meter" or not.
  21. ... I'd be worried about some critter trashing the cache! Anything smelly (candles, incense, cigars, etc.) should be kept out of a cache unless you want to be constantly cleaning up and replacing the container. Thus spake Amythustra.
