  1. Unfortunately it is a common thing. Caused by... A. Placing containers that are inappropriate for the conditions they are exposed to. B. Cachers that are reluctant to, or don't know how to log a need maintenance when they find a damp log. C. A lack of proper owner maintenance. When I started I would dry wet logs or add dry ones if needed. I soon realized all I was doing was enabling poor cache ownership and poor logging practice. The owner needs to be notified if the cache needs maintenance. Thats exactly why NM is there. The cache needs to be archived if the owner wont respond to NM's. Sure there are exceptions. Hospitalizations, Illnesses, injuries etc. are all good reasons for the cache community to kick in and help. But generally, maintaining caches for owners is enabling poor ownership habits. You are seeing the results of that practice.
  2. What if I place a log book inside of a nano. The nano inside a magnetic key holder. The key holder to the inside of an ammo can. Then hollow out the bottom of a 2 foot diameter rock so I can fit an ammo can in it. Place the ammo can inside of the rock. Then place the rock inside of a hollow tree? Do I get to check all the size options?
  3. Since I mange the business, I gave myself permission to put one in my parking lot! Thats is a great idea. From more than 10 years ago and still something to strive for when placing a cache. But the fact is, with more than three million placed now, reasons to bring someone to a location are harder and harder to find. ESPECIALLY in more urban areas. When a cache owner finds that to be the case they should try to make the cache itself more memorable rather than just another bison tube hanging in a tree or a key box stuck to a guardrail. 6 or 7 years ago I did a LPC in a parking lot (shame on me) that was one of those "snake in a can" with camo tape covering it. I jumped and screamed like a little girl. Then gave it a favorite point.
  4. As I said in the original post........ "I'm well aware there are many reasons for a delay in logging. I'm primarily a GPS user so I totally understand a log may be delayed for days or even weeks but this one incident is not what's buggin me." Perhaps you missed that part?
  5. Today I watched someone search for my cache for about five minutes, (using an phone and app) not find it and drive off. No DNF logged yet as of 2 hours later. I'm well aware there are many reasons for a delay in logging. I'm primarily a GPS user so I totally understand a log may be delayed for days or even weeks but this one incident is not what's buggin me. I'm in a position where I can see people search for my cache several hours a day. The last time my cache had a DNF logged on it was 1/24/20. 23 people have found it in that time but I have watched at least 6 and probably closer to 10 people spend 5,10 or even more minutes searching with no luck who have never logged a DNF. Do others that have a hide they can monitor notice the same thing? Is this just the new normal or has it been this way and I just didn't pay attention?
  6. Currently Zero. That location is on private property. The closest cache is GC48C6C located about 3/4 of a mile S.W. of the "stone wall in the shade of an Oak Tree."
  7. My job for the last 40+ years requires a pen all day long so, as a habit, I almost always have a pen in my pocket. With just over 700 finds there have been 2 occasions where I somehow found myself without a pen. On those 2 occasions I simply did not log the cache because it was my fault for not having something to sign with.
  8. Not sure about glues for cache construction. But for Eskimo homes, use Igloo.
  9. I'm intrigued as to why you would discourage someone from making a cache that is rather unique. I applaud and welcome more variety. Personally I would rather own and see placed a unique cache that effort has been put into, that is found less frequently, gets a higher percentage of favorite points and sets a better example of quality. There is FAR too many low quality caches in place as it is.
  10. That's what I was thinking about myself... Trading even or up would be "interesting"... I've got a geopack full of swag. I think 3 golf balls and a few ketchup packets would be a fair trade for a engraved gold key chain. Maybe even throw in a well worn beanie baby to be safe.
  11. It's the regional differences again. I wouldn't even think twice about this. There's worse stuff sprayed on walls/bridges. The kids can see it argument means nothing, just listen to kids when they think no adults are around (not all though). LOL. One thing NEVER been accused of in life is being prude. I don't drop the f-bomb or other choice words around my granddaughter. I also don't excuse poor behavior of one person (referring to the cache loggers) by pointing out the poor behavior of others. If worse stuff was sprayed on something I owned, Id paint over it as soon as possable. I try to be better than those "others" But I'm only human. Sometimes I'm not.
  12. Totally agree. Inappropriate to be in a cache. Inappropriate to be in a log for a cache.
  13. Anything with your caching name engraved in it that's gold, silver, platinum or jewel encrusted would be fine for me!
  14. I have no problem with bumping old threads for 2 reasons. First. Most things that get discussed are just variations of subjects that have discussed over the years anyway. However, as new people come into the activity, these subjects are new to them. Second. Like you said it demonstrates how many things that are discussed as "new" topics have been discussed for well over a decade.
  15. This is actually a brilliant marketing idea. His shop is suffering due to the "unpleasantness" So... Hide "treasure" from your store. Sell tickets that enable people to "find the treasure" Almost assuredly will sell more tickets then the value of the treasure. Pocket more money than you normally make being open for business!
  16. If you don't have one in Ohio I could allow you to join my group, then I'll go find one and sign "our" name to it.
  17. Absolutely! But I like coming to the forums and being grumpy. I feel like I'm in good company!
  18. What gets me me aside from what has been discussed is the lines like.... I know these hides will probably blow your mind and you'll be incredibly impressed with my extreme level of detail and creativity. or... “You earthlings can learn much from me. Pay attention and soon you too can be come an expert. If you're curious how popular I am, check out all my most awesome stats! I did. “He” has 995 “most awesome geocaches of all time” hides. (actually 999 currently. Probably too busy being awesome to update the stats.) The MOST favorite points ANY of “his” caches has is "most awesome geocaches of all time # 204 with a whopping 3 favorite points. I have one humble little hide. It has 6 favorite points. My mind is blown. By the BS
  19. That may be the single best observation I've read in this or any other forums.
  20. Same here. But I attribute it not only to the same reasons others have mentioned but also because, with the rise of "apps", I truly believe there a lot of people that are not even aware there's a NM or NA log. Those, for all intents and purposes, are hidden
  21. I would have to respectfully disagree with that. I firmly believe that no caches at all is a much better alternative. Shoddy tourist caches propped up with throwdowns are just litter.
  22. The rules/guidelines are fine the way the are. If a CO wants to remove it from play then they should disable it AND remove it. As has been stated, when I'm going on vacation, my GPSr gets a PQ loaded 1-10 days BEFORE I go caching. If I find one that has been disabled AFTER I loaded a PQ, I'm still claiming a find. If the CO wants to disallow my find I'm not going to complain. I only have 700 finds in 10 years. Numbers and arguments are not something I'm worried about.
  23. I also have received these messages. And messages telling ME to stop. This issue has been going on since at least June 25 as referenced in a previous thread. Aware of the problem for a week and not resolving it? Need another week or two?
