  1. Im relatively new to this but had an idea for a travel bug. This may have been thought of or tried allready, but i was thinking about making a disposable camera travel bug. Would send it on its way to take pictures of interesting people or places like state line signs, scenic views, historical sites, yourselves, etc,,,. I could attach a small logbook for photo descriptions. After the last Cacher takes the last photo, he/she would keep the bug then log their find online. I could then email them for info on sending my address and postage to them so that they could send the camera back to me. Actually i might not need to make this a travel bug being that it will end up back at my original location.. Any suggestions or criticisms would be welcomed,,, Thanks!
  2. Like many others, we like location! Coming across history or scenic views is really a plus. Ive enjoyed almost all of our cache finds so far but multicaches and out in the wilderness caches are my favs. Ive hit all the locals so now I try to plan trips where we might find several because of the long drives. Today however, we drove about 200 miles roundtrip to do a multicache and I have to say that it was well worth the trip. Enjoyed this one! Oldest Church
  3. Hhhmmmmm i allways thought i was a little bit off! cachebaby's quote: (If I can't cache in these...forget it.) Those would be fine down here except for one little thing,,wait wait, make that 10 million little things. We call em Redbugs!!!

  5. I agree with Jeremy that we shouldnt set out to cram stuff down each other's throats or solicit our beliefs to anyone, but on the other hand, running across a cache like this wouldnt change or corrupt my life.. We run across offensive things everyday whether we are caching or not! The mistake here was that this cache should have been labeled a theme cache, then there would have been no problem. We can make up our minds if we want to go out on the hunt. If you dont like it or want to do it, then dont! And if you do happen to find the cache by mistake, quit your whining and get over it!!!
  6. I just thought of a nifty cache idea that im sure everyone will want to try. Was thinking about setting out a microcache, in it placing a new crisp $5 dollar bill. Whenever someone finds it, they would trade/double up. For instance the first finder takes the new crisp $5 bill then leaves $10, the next finder would take the $10 and leave $20, you get the idea.... As soon as the cache stash reaches, lets say $50,000, I would retrieve and archive it, then send out a Special Recognition Certificate to that last GeoCacher that found it. Im thinking that would thrill him/her to death!!! Now all i have to do is figure out what to do with that lame $50,000,,,,
  7. I cant see a problem with putting a knife in a cache either. Ive traded a couple or two. Heck, on my very first find i had to let go of my trusty Old Timer because i had forgotten to bring any trade goods. I miss that knife but thats a small price to pay for all the fun that ive had in the short time ive been GeoCaching!
  8. I dont think there was ever a requirement to become a charter member to receive the weekly update. But to help with the website maintenance and because i enjoy the site so much, i figured the $30 annual fee was a very good investment!
  9. We've seen more snakes since we have been GeoCaching these past few months than i have in the last 5 years. Not trying to scare you from GeoCaching, but i just want to say that its a good idea to have a companion at times. One of you watching the GPSR and the other watching where you are going. I know this isnt much comfort but most snakes are harmless and they usually try to avoid you as much as you try to avoid them.

  11. I agree with Faithwalker and DaMama with their response. Their quote: I guess the moral of this story is if you ALWAYS post that it's a themed cache AND/OR the contents of the cache, the SEEKER will have the opportunity to decide if the cache is one they want to hunt. If it's been out in the field for a while, read the logs to see if the things traded will be of your interest or not. Or just go find it, not worry about it and have fun. I agree with many here that just finding the cache is where the excitement lies. Heck, if all i was after was contents then i would surely be disappointed at times. The usual bad stuff (porn, cig butts, gum wrappers, food, explosives, etc,,, shouldnt be included. If its a theme cache, make sure its stated on the cache page. I dont understand why this is such a biggie!!!
  12. The redbugs (chiggers) are plentiful down here, caching last week certainly reminded us of that. Chicken bought some Ivarest and it really helps stop the itching. But,, does anyone have a suggestion on keeping them off in the first place? BTW, im not trying the pantihose idea[].

  14. As stated above, it seems that the person hiding the cache should take into consideration the affects that a cache and the people coming in to find it might have on the area. For the most part, i dont think that GeoCachers will cause too many problems if we remember the Tread Lightly and Cache In,Trash Out principles. Oh and one more thing, dont go crazy with a machete while out in the wilderness, (hhmmmm that was another thread, wasnt it?),,,,
  15. Texas isnt just desert ya know. Believe me, we have some heavily forested areas here in the southeast. I understand what you're saying and of course i have a machete myself, however for GeoCaching i just cant see too many times when "blazing" new trails would be necessary. I guess if its a cache that doesnt get found but every 2 or 3 months then maybe it could be! Just seems to me that Classic just wants to get out and chop stuff up, and in a park no less. In MHO it doesnt make for a good image for GeoCachers in general.
  16. Someone may have stated this above, but here goes! Think for a moment, the person that hid the cache in the first place didnt use a machete, chainsaw, or weed wacker when he/she hid it, did they? and what if they did, your path is allready cut and you dont need to make a new one.
  17. WAAS doesnt seem to make much difference when enabled on my GPS76. It shows that i lock on fine but i cant tell any difference in operation. Havnt enabled it at all for caching...
  18. I dont know if i would ever use the "Archive this Cache" button. I have run across a couple where i felt that i had to have been right on the mark and the cache simply had to be missing. Seeing others log ahead of me saying they couldnt find doesnt make a difference either. Even if ive found a cache and then went back and it wasnt in the same place i would think its possible that the cache's owner may have moved it a few feet for some reason. I simply leave a note if i feel that i was dead on and it wasnt there. Hopefully the cache owner will see the log and check on it him/herself...
  19. OK, hows about some of ya'll bringing some of these cool "signature" items down this way! Would love to come across some of these, at least to take a gander at!!! I did miss picking up one of the wooden geonickels that float around the Houston area the other day. Would have sure liked to have seen and brought one over to stash in one of the local caches here.
  20. I try to do as Prime Suspect has recommended. Sometimes when i get close i switch screens to see my present coordinates and then try to match the cache coordinates. This has helped a few times for sure. Also i start looking around when the GPSR shows that im within 70 or 80 feet of the cache for likely hiding places. This is where i have my best luck usually. Think where you might hide a cache, then look for that spot. Many times i pick out where the cache is before i even reach the coordinates... Im pretty new at this as well, but im learning more with each find!

  22. I bought my GPS76 online but didnt even think about getting a case for it. Instead of going back and ordering, i too went to WallyWorld and found a case designed for GPSRs. It has a main pouch for the unit, a 2nd pouch for my cigarette adapter cord, and side and front pouches for batteries and my compass. Also has a rain flap built in in case you get into a downpour. Think it was $9.95 and it sure works for me.
