GPS coordinates taken from maps
FollowMeChaps replied to Cache U Nutter's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
If you are in a part of the country with good Google Earth imagery (which I believe you are) this is probably the best option. You may first have to change your settings Tools / Options / tick the 'Degrees, Decimal Minutes' option under Show Lat/Long but the coordinates given in bottom LH corner of the screen under the scale are as accurate as most gps units. You'll find that if you paste any cache page co-ords into the search box at the top it will show you exactly where a cache is. In open country I've often used this to determine where a cache I'm hiding is then double checked it on my gps. Google Earth is a great cacher's friend! -

.....not a bad idea, but it really needs a large box as a reward doesn't it?

A bit too far for me to maintain but one of my favourite areas. There are several more falls on the route from Dan-yr-Ogof so would make a fantastic extreme multi. Is anyone up for it?

Post deleted - I'm going to rise above this after all!

Cycling on Public Footpaths
FollowMeChaps replied to mongoose39uk's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
I've always believed that rules are made for the interpretation of the wise not the blind following of fools. Provided cyclists heed the needs of other path users, where's the problem? Surely there's more important things in life to grumble about? [Opps, sorry, I'm forgetting we Brit's love to moan] -
I fully agree with the last few posts. Why don't the page owners just amend their pages to show a fee is payable and then the issue will go away? Simple really!

Berkshire SAR Dogs Geocoin

I too got mine last night at the event. Apparently it's a boy! Let's hope he's good at dog handling! -
Gosh, what a coincidence! As we have a local event this Friday I've just been on my own rescue mission to recover some TBs from 2 of my less frequented (harder!) caches where they have been languishing for several months awaiting the next visitor. Having just logged them into the event I come onto the fourm and I cop this thread! However, I twice emailed the owner of a geocoin which has been similarly been in our Let's Go Caving! Burrington Combe cache making the same offer only to have no response so I've deliberately left it put. I've personally never been really into the coin/TB thing so I suppose I'm wondering whether we should be 'rescuing' coins/TBs without the owner's prior blessing? Surely it's curteousy to ask first? As the owner of some less frequently visited caches it's great to have a resident coin/TB as further encouragement for others to visit it. Of course I've no problem if the 'rescue' is by a new visitor to the cache, after all that's what it's all about. However, to have the owner or others re-visit just to specifically move on the item is a different kettle of fish IMHO - that's why I asked the owners first. Now I bet that's ! PS: Excellent bookmark and utility Jazz666

Just a last minute reminder to those from the local area (however you choose to define that as all are welcome) that we are meeting this Friday in Yatton for the Northern Somerset/Southern Bristol get-together GC10P5Q LINK It would also help if those of you planning to come who have not yet logged your intention please do so - thanks. Be there or be geographically challenged!

I fully endorse the yellow etrex given the new H has the fancy chip to help you see in the dark - it even works indoors! If you end up loosing it (easily done) you'll be glad you went for the cheaper option. Also get a data cable, yes. Here's a link to a UK seller (that advertise on www.geocaching.com so support our hobby) charging £65 for the H - link

Congratulations old chap. Treat the steed to a 1,000 cache MOT and service plus oil the armour ready for the next 1K. Will your Coat of Arms now be updated to reflect this achievement? -

Seems fixed now - at last! Methinks there's a bunch of geocachers who don't know their gerbils (& mice) from their hamsters! -
There's also a few around Madonna's gaff in Dorset - I think she's famous; ask any Catholic

BUMP When are they going to fix this?!!!! -
Good luck to all who take part, I doff my hat to you all! I was hoping to get down there today to spectate and say farewell to the Morgan Mob but my plans have been thwarted. A CHALLENGE TO ALL: Why don't we encourage cachers to create local teams to take part next year? I'm sure we Westcountry folk could whip the pants off all you others!

Changing regular cache to subscriber only.
FollowMeChaps replied to jerryo's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
Here, here! I 100% agree. On a personal level I try to do exactly this, either make my caches disabled access or more challenging. We are now working on one that hopefully ticks both boxes. IMHO if your cache is potentially dangerous you are completely correct to make it members only. It won't stop the inexperienced, who may become premium members, but it lessens the chances of someone just finding it by accident and doing it, in other words you are taking every 'reasonable precaution' to reduce the risk and so protect yourself and the noble art of geocaching. I have done exactly the same to my 'more risky' cache (ok. this link is blatant advertising but it reinforces the point). Out of interest I've just posted the coordinates for the cache in question into Google Earth. Having done this I could easily find the cache without a GPS. You can therefore see that without making it premium only then any idiot of any age could stumble over the listing whilst surfing the wed (it happens) and go try it out, not a good idea -

This may be old news to many but I've only just come across it - . Now there's a cheap way in! Sounds fun!
