  1. FlyFishermanbob raises an interesting point, how many caches do you need to have before people will go and visit an area. I have ruminated a little previously on the subject of cache lift off and how many caches need to be placed in a concentrated to jump start caching activity. If you consider the Isle of Bute there are around 25 caches ranging from cache & dash trads to more complex series. What do people think would be needed to attract folks to Kintyre or Arran. It looks like most folks who go to Bute expect to visit around a dozen caches, and certainly I can remember being advised that Norfolk needed needed some cache clusters so that it would be possible to find 15 to 20 caches in one outing before we would get more out of county visitors. So short of tempting the Perth Pathfinders, Team Clova or snaik to move west what mix of cache types and number of caches would temp folks to spend £50 on a day trip to a hebridean island/peninsula? Oh and I've already made a start of the Arran Ales at the Catacol Bay Hotel
  2. OK so what word, which misleadingly sounds like it might be from Greek mythology, conects a the following three things: cross channel navigation on 3 June, 1944 rolling stones the American way of death
  3. Heston Island Hop GCQP7K in the Solway Firth between Scotland and England is rated as a 5/5, although its more of a terrain problem (4/4.5) rather than a metal problem (2/2.5). Anyway its a very enjoyable cache in an area of 8m tides which is only accessible on high/low springs.
  4. Thanks Forester for the info on Eastern Kingdom, which means that Coastal station Fife Ness is already covered. I've also had a couple of emails from other coastal cachers, so I might go ahead and set up a simple home page listing all the sea areas, coastal stations etc. Any ideas for a name, Attention All Shipping , Coastal Chaos , Maritime Madness
  5. There are only 55 earthcaches in the British Isles of which only one appears to be Irish, 13 Wesh, 14 Scottish and 27 English. There are no Manx, Jèrrais, Sarnian, Orcadian, Shetlander or Cornish Earthcaches, so there is obviously an opportunity there for some of the other nations on this archipelago to do some cache setting.
  6. It just occurred to me that from january I will be working fairly close to one of my all time favourite places (or at least favourite place names), Machrihanish. To me it conjures up memories of staying up as a child to hear the shipping forecast and all those magical names, Viking, Dogger Bank, St Catherine's Point, Valentia, ... So I thought here's an opportunity to place some caches which have nothing to do with motorways, A-roads or service stations. But is there anyone else out there who is in a position to join in, and more to the point are there any folks out there who fancy searching for a cache in Tiree, Stornoway, Lerwick, Fair Isle, Wick, Leuchers, Malin Head, Valley, Finisterre ...
  7. I was able to reach Horsey, Horsey Don't You Stop yesterday because the ground was frozen, whereas on Sunday it had been a dnf as we were thwarted by a sea of deep mud and submerged paths (even in wellies). Maybe we should try for Treasure island, although I think that the temperature will have to drop even more.
  8. Congratulations on your Tricentenial Its surprising the places you have both navigated to, you're very familiar logger of west country caches. Hope you will have time to try the three wheelchair frendlies in Weymouth, one of which should give plenty of oppertunity to rev up a supercharged trike!
  9. As of January I'm going to be based on the Isle of Arran so the above cache is one of the first I plan to visit as during the winter months its only a ferry ride away from Lochranza. I'd been looking at the Kintyre Peninsula as it seems to have lots of possibilities (as does the island of Sanda) but you will just have to wait and see, as for Arran, well as I've already found half the caches on an afternoon without transport I think that I'll have to be putting my efforts into cache setting rather than finding untill I save up the pennies to afford a long weekend on the Isle of Bute.
  10. Zeus & another - doesn't narrow it down much - ?Leda, was this the swan thing, so born on a lake as Mrs Zeus had had enough of him playing away and banned a home birth Me thinks you mean Zeus and Leto. Apollo was born on the floating island of Delos because some of the other gods were jealous (in particular Hera, Zeus's sister/wife who was always "T"ed at Zeus for his extramarital activities as Archer4 pointed out) and put a curse on Leto so that she couldn't give birth on land or on the sea, so old Zeus conjured up this floating island that got around the problem and he then anchored after Artemis and Apollo (they were twins of course) had been born. Interestingly enough Artemis is the trade name of a line of sight range & bearing positioning system, which is where I first came across the story of the mythical twins and their mobile birthplace. Of course getting away from NASA's Apollo programme their is also an ESA Artemis space programme which I think has some link with the WAAS dgps corrections. EDITED - raided Boba's Greek Myth book to find out more about Mrs Zeus aka Hera, daughter of Cronos and Rhea.
  11. Can I just point out the Strobe Body lights only cost 99p from toyshops, which makes them one of the least expensive cache containers out there - though of course you do need to paint them up, remove the batteries and manufacture the log book scroll.
  12. Well of course in 1926 Ipswitch Town (Blue & White) had there biggest ever defeat 10-5 (nice one Ealing), not sure if it was in the FA Cup, but in any case the Tractor Boys letting in 10 goals is a very very good memory ... he he he and - OTBC
  13. Congratulations Dave Wow Dave I make that 50 per year, must be some kind of record. Many thanks too for all the hard work you have put in since 2002 promoting GeoCaching in Norfolk, and for all the trail trash too - that last comment is a joke.
  14. We faced a similar problem over this cache (GCRFKB) which is associated with an area/event that was the start of the blood libel against the Jews; in this particular case the cache was designed to repudiate the events without being campaigning or overly strident. On a a lighter note I would draw you attention to one of the caches on our ultimate cache wish list, Adirondack Murder Mystery GCP8MW, and having read the cache description you might like to take a peak at one of the stages along the way - that's what we call a distraction cache
  15. My penny worth goes on Inter Milan who certainly play in Black & Blue stripes (verticle though) no idea what there club badge looks like.
  16. Well Lichtenstein is Europe's largest producer of false teeth (that's individual rather than sets of teeth), so I'm assuming that Uzbekistan has the highest rate of false teeth wearing.
  17. Knettishall Heath Country Park GC89C9 also has deer and Perzwalski's Wild Horses and in addition there is the Norfolk Wildlife Trust's Flying Flock of Shetland, Black Welsh Mountain, Herdwick and Hebridean sheep - unfortunately they never seem to be flying while I'm around. Visited The Old Mines GC4E74 on Tuesday and saw not only Red Deer but Red Squirrels and a group of seals, each of whom was perched on top of its own large boulder along the shore; not sure whether they were a pod, spring or plum, obviously they were not a raft of seals as they were all out of the sea.
  18. DING!!! Sorry about the delay, got myself stuck on the Isle of Arran miles from the nearest computer.
  19. [HINT] Its in the centre of Norwich, and I saw the cache container was still in place on Satarday
  20. Mhh, I would have thought you would have got this one easily, after all it is also known as Little L****n by the Sea
  21. Anything by Leadmagnet is worth doing though you will probably have to do some prepreparation. South side of the city around the Gog Magog Hill has some interest. As others have said the Godmanchester/Huntingdon area has some nice caches. Much the best idea is to head 80km northeast to Norwich where there are some great caches including one bang in the middle of the city which has still not been found after 5 months (it was there this afternoon when we checked).
  22. Nope, this is definately a real place and not any sort of hertitage tourist concoction. Must admit though that I don't associate the acsents of the the locals with anything remotely Cockney. I am expecting a certain Devonian & canine chum to be posting soon though ...
  23. We can recommend Don't Get Lost In Your Own Museum GCGAYP which has to be worked out in the field. In fact we know of several others including one in Swaffham, Norfolk which we are told are evil, we however feel that they are merely playful.
  24. Let me see, mhh, nope. I must be well over 100 miles from where you have suggested MartyBartfast and these ones are being used for their original purposes, lighting roads, being sat on and guarding footpaths from stray vehicles.
