Looks like Parks Canada got it right.
Youtube clip placed on my local newspaper's website today.
Anyone know anything more about this?

Here is a more up to date thread I started. I was able to get it to work and for my area the maps are stunning. Great addition to my 62st.

I just picked up 8 AA's, 12 AAA's and a 1 hour charger for like $50.
I'll let you all know how they turn out after they show up.

That's great. And a much better treasure than a moldy McDonalds coupon etc.
And the small investment is perfect. Hopefully your endeavor causes people to pick up their
trade game in your area.

Here's a novel idea. Rather than eschew a knee-jerk reaction affecting 100's-1000's of
geo-cachers the powers that be should have held the offending cache placer accountable and fine or
charge him/her accordingly. Geocaching.com can follow-up by deleting his/her account and banning
his/her IP. This would allow the rest of us with common sense to continue enjoying the parks.
Just a thought....

Please excuse my ignorance, but what is the big deal of placing a cache in a National Park?
Isn't the idea of caching to get people out and enjoying the outdoors? Caching would bring people
into the park who may have never visited. Nobody is harming anything. I haven't seen any environmental
disasters caused by a cache (yet). Please enlighten me.

Ya I hear ya, unfortunately the only anchor I own is the one I have to drag out of bed tomorrow morning to go fishing

Thanks for the laugh. Are we married to the same person?
Ha...I meant my posterior. No way she'd get up to come fishing.

Not sure if it's cool to post commercial links but here is the Dakota 20 for $209
with a micro ammo can.
The Canuck price at .ca is the same.

Just ordered one of these, good price.
Should have ordered from the States because of the high CAD...
Savings would have just been eaten up with shipping, brokerage and taken an extra two weeks to ship.

Seems fixed. After sitting for a day the batts are still 100%. Looks like it was in the nautical settings.

Thanks all for the comments. I think it is an issue of precision versus accuracy - it's not like when I take a few steps I'm underdoing any significant change in tree cover. I know accuracy is not always going to be dead on, but the compass headings should be consistent.
Thanks for the link luvvinbird. I'm wary of a rep saying "it'll be in the next firmware release" - that can be just a canned answer to get someone to bugger off; additionally, firmware takes a long time to develop and test.
At least he acknowledged the problem (which I am also having). Usually the patent answer to get people to bugger off is "we haven't experienced that".

Yup, on the map page set up a data field showing your coordinates (lat Long).
The data field is annoying though and I also prefer to do it Spraginator's way.
But to get the coordinates on the map....
Map/menu/setup map/data fields/1 large(or whatever)/ then highlight the data field,
Enter/scroll through choices and select Location (Lat/Long)/Enter/ Bob's your Uncle

I have the 62st. If I have clear sky and no power lines it's usually 3m (9feet). Add tree cover and it goes up to 6m. I've seen it as high as 10m.
In those cases I just increase my search area. I had hoped the external antennae on the 62 would have helped more. Sometimes I come in from several
directions and average the results.

I'm using Duracell alkaline AA cells and the battery function set to alkaline.
Noticed the barometric pressure had logs for every two minutes going back days,
although it has been without batteries and plugged into the USB.
Altitude setting set to "Save when power on", not "save always".
Found some nautical stuff registering "on". Turned it all off...will see what happens.

Sorting caches by Favorites really helped highlight some great caches to focus on -- hey, the system works!
Glad you enjoyed your trip. This is an awesome place to live/work.
Thank you for the favorites tip, I never thought of that.

altimeter on??
Nope.

Unfortunately, geosense is the best tool for finding caches, and you can't buy that.
True enough I'm getting better though. Experience definitely helps.
Was stymied on one yesterday. Sat down on a log and took in the whole area.
Eye finally twigged on a piece of wood that just didn't "look right".
Climbed up and moved it and sure enough he cache was behind it.
I have a new respect for trackers and am beginning to understand some of the things
they must look for. At first it was frustrating, but I now understand if all the
caches were QEF's you'd get bored of the hobby pretty quickly.

Thanks for the advice guys, Ecanderson your tip to d/l to the computer first worked great and saved me some frustration.
You guys are right, Basecamp is kinda funky. I live on Vancouver Island and wanted to d/l the entire island as a sat map.
The server would only let me do small parcels at a time which I had to stitch together to get full coverage. It eventually worked but
took an evening to do the southern tip of the island. Kinda hokey. But it works.
Is it just me or should Garmin be contributing some support to this site for assisting their customers. This is way
better than their useless website.
Thanks again,

Hi all,
My Garmin 62st seems to be consuming batteries when in the "off" state.
I have battery save "on", and altitude/barometric logging "off" but it still seems to burn
through a couple AA's if left off for two days.
Any thoughts? Is there another setting that is active when the unit is supposed to be off?
Removing the batteries every night is a PITA.
Thanks,

Using printed Google maps to find a cache? That's hardcore and I commend you.
I started with a car GPS (Nuvi 3790) and it wasn't that great. Tried my Blackberry
with stock maps and it was much worse. Now I use the Nuvi to get me to the parking
coordinates (if available) and a Garmin 62ST handheld to find the cache. The combo is
about as good as it gets I think. Even better now with the birdseye sat pics on the handheld.
Doesn't help me find the cache's though....still averaging about 50% first time out.
B.
-
I enter the parking coordinates manually into my car's gps to get me to the parking spot. Then fire up the handheld for
getting to the cache.
B.
-
Against my better judgement I went ahead and subscribed to Garmin for Birdseye on my 62st. It took some wrangling but when
I got it to work it's awesome. I now have a choice between topographical and satellite images wherever I happen to be that day.
The picture quality was much better than I expected. I can even see my car in my driveway.
So far the only problem is it took awhile to get to work (typical Garmin) and I can't figure out how to store the image maps on my
8 GB SD card.
Comments?

I use a regular style backpack, or a light jacket with lots of pockets. Popokiiti is right.
I think these would make an excellent pack. $21 at MEC.
