  1. Unfortunately localhikes.com has their fill of reporters. You will be placed on a waiting list. That totally depends on your area! If somebody from Southern NM wants in, I will gladly let then have it, I already have my fill in West Texas. Seems strange, me handling two states. Guess not every area has too many yet!
  2. I will second the localhikes.com suggestion. Become a reporter for localhikes.com. They will give you all the software, show you how, and even post your hikes on a national web site for all to share. Seems like a match made in heaven!
  3. FREE might be tough. But..... ExpertGPS will allow you to do what you ask. You might download a trial copy and see what it will do for you. I have in the past used it to draw a track on a topo-map, then upload it as a track to my GPSr. Once in the field, the GPSr is used to follow that track. The functionality of ExpertGPS is great. The level of support provided by them is FANTASTIC! If it will work for you - you might buy it. At $60, it isn't bad. I wish I could say the same thing about National Geographic TOPO. However, I cannot. While I do admit the program is very good, and has some functions that ExpertGPS does not have, it is VERY PRICY. It is $100 PER STATE here. Their support is worse than poor. Their support man Michael Wildshut insists that NG TOPO will work on a USB connection, but the GPS vendor MUST supply you with a driver for that USB cable. BULL$H1T!!! Even after 3 attempts to get him to understand, he couldn't grasp the concept of USB. Frankly, I still use NG TOPO. But if ExpertGPS ever gave me the ability to do elevation profiles, I would dump TOPO and go with ExpertGPS all the way. Hope this helps!
  4. I was just throwing an idea out there.... Actually, I have not used EasyGPS in some time. I have used ExpertGPS (The VERY BEST AVAILABLE IMHO) for a few years now. But I have done exactly the install I described to you in the past and wondered why it didn't upgrade. It did, I just had the folder doubled. You might E-mail Dan for an idea. He is quite helpful. Or just pay the $60 and upgrade to ExpertGPS. Don't think you will regret it. And it (newest version) is fully functional with the 60CS and USB!
  5. I know it seems like a stupid answer.... BUT... Check to be sure you are installing it in the proper directory and that your icons and shortcuts are pointed to the latest install. I have done this. Watch out - the installer will double the EasyGPS folder. C:\Program Files\Navigation\EasyGPS\EasyGPS If not, then ????
  6. WHEW!!! You are correct. I just went back and checked my work. And I found a disasterous mistake. I read 30U. I typed 13U. In my defense, 11 years of my mil career was in the 13 zone. None the less, an un-acceptable error. I stand humbley corrected. Good thing I wasn't doing an op-ord for a patrol. Thanks.
  7. UTM and MGRS are very similar, and since they are based in a base-10 number system, it is very easy to use. Lat/Lon being based in degrees (360) and minutes (60) and seconds (60) OR degrees and decimal degrees OR degrees and minutes and decimal minutes use different and more difficult number systems. A MGRS grid of 13R CF 12345 67890 will give you a 1 meter (3.28 foot) precision. If you wanted to move that point 100 meters north, you can calculate that grid in your head as 13R CF 12345 67990 without a lot of math converting minutes to feet etc. UTM/MGRS are simpler than lat/lon. But in the end either can do the same job. It is all what you learn and how good your math skills are.
  8. Well, when I sell a used one, I make sure the buyer gets ALL the original stuff with it, including the reciept. For the units without a SN#, that is enough. If it somehow were tied to my name, I wouold just offer to mail it in for them. However, my used GPSRs seem to get bought up locdally, never out of the city.
  9. This is simple to solve. All you need to do is to get the authorities of the country of interest to you to allow GC.COM access to their benchmark database for listing on the site. That simple. And please be sure to let the rest of us know when it happens... we often hunt marks while travelling away from home. I would do it for you... but A - I don't know where you are. B - I don't live there anyway. C - I don't have the contacts that you do there - wherever that is. D - I haven't found all the benchmarks here yet.
  10. OK. With a little more digging, I find that this point is located on a penninsula on what looks to be Saskatchewan River between the cities of Tobin Lake and RavenDale, at a smaller town called MOSSYVALE. Again, hope this helps. With 20+ years of experience in MGRS, it is a simple matter for me.
  11. If the information you gave is correct, your location is N 53* 43.635 W 102* 58.792 +/- a bit for rounding. I don't have a map handy at work. But you are looking at something in Canada. Perhaps with the info above someone else can give you the location. Good luck. Hope this helps.
  12. DITTO !!! Except my jeep has the steering wheel on the right side. Hmmm... does that mean yours is on the wrong side? Hmmm... mine was a mail jeep. Does that mean yours is a femail jeep?
  13. USB on ExpertGPS works fine for me. Sorry to hear you are having problems. Problems? Hmmm.... I have ExpertGPS v 1.5.3, and I don't see a way to get the USB connection active. When I try to install a new GPSr, it defaults to com-1 at 9600 baud. This is where normally run the unit. What am I missing? Manual has no notes about USB, and 1.5.3 seems to be the latest version. Tell me your secret. Thanks EDIT: That is V 1.3.5! It is early, and I was up late. Thanks again.
  14. Two suggestions. EasyGPS is recommended by this site. If you like EasyGPS, I strongly recommend ExpertGPS. Best $60 I ever spent. Now, if they would just get the USB interface working!
  15. WELCOME HOME SIR !!!!! Wonder if you got a photo of that mark? That I would like to see! Thank you for putting a finish to the war I started and was not allowed to finish because GWBs daddy didn't have the guts to tell the UN to buzz off the first time. My son Army_Scout is also home now, and trying to settle in. It takes time. He sleeps easier with my A2 next to his bed. As for the media, I have decided that if it ain't FOX, it f---s. I don't watch the others, and I refuse to speak with them at events. No matter what you tell them, they spin it their own way. I don't buy the local paper. I do use the paper, we have puppies. I must admit the paper IS good for something. Any media folks out there that feel offended - maybe you should look to the inside and try to change that perception. IMHO - perception IS! AGAIN - WELCOME HOME SIR !!!!! And thanks.
  16. It all depends on how long you want to keep the log. Ask a historian or museum curator. They will tell you PENCIL will last for quite a long time. Pen OTOH, will deteriorate within a few years. So how long do you want the log to last?
  17. Well, it is here. And the one spec they never tell you, one that I use a lot, is not as good as the VISTA. I am disappointed! Uploading a tracklog seems to be limited to 500 trackpoints. After that, the tracklog is trunucated, and you get a warning message. The VISTA had 750 trackpoints. Has anyone else noticed this? I hope Garmin will bump it up to 750 or even 1000 in a future version of the firmware.
  18. I had to check twice.... yep, you asked about the CS. That one just above me is the c version.
  19. The price is right, but the shipping will KILL you.
  20. NO - selling them here is not a problem. That is what this area is for. Hundreds of GPSrs, and other caching related items are listed for sale here. After reading the message title, my first I thought "dadgum, I just bought my 60CS and I could have saved money." Then I saw your price, and realized I got a better deal from a dealer. AND a free T-shirt too. They were out of free hats!
  21. By now I think everyone knows my opinion of NG TOPO support. Michael Wildshut is a real piece of work. Still, TOPO is avery fine program. So much so that I ordered my 60CS with the serial cables so I can continue to use TOPO. Michael Wildshut at TOPO support says the USB support is alreadu functional in TOPO, you just need Garmin to give you the driver for your USB cable. I bought the serial cable anyway. NOTE: If you open TOPO, and pick a GPSr with settings near the one us use that is not listed, you can then click on Preferences - GPS Settings and change some of the settings to better fit your current GPSr. Hope this helps.
  22. LOCKTITE 242 Comes apart with normal force. LOCKTITE 271 Requires HEAT to come apart. 242 WILL work. Of course, so will bubble gum!
  23. Shop for a VISTA. I just sold my 4 month old Vista for $200. Getting a 60CS newt week. They are out there, just look and be patient.
