  1. UTM and MGRS are very similar, and since they are based in a base-10 number system, it is very easy to use. Lat/Lon being based in degrees (360) and minutes (60) and seconds (60) OR degrees and decimal degrees OR degrees and minutes and decimal minutes use different and more difficult number systems.

A MGRS grid of 13R CF 12345 67890 will give you a 1 meter (3.28 foot) precision. If you wanted to move that point 100 meters north, you can calculate that grid in your head as 13R CF 12345 67990 without a lot of math converting minutes to feet etc.

UTM/MGRS are simpler than lat/lon. But in the end either can do the same job. It is all what you learn and how good your math skills are. :(

  2. Well, when I sell a used one, I make sure the buyer gets ALL the original stuff with it, including the reciept. For the units without a SN#, that is enough. If it somehow were tied to my name, I wouold just offer to mail it in for them. However, my used GPSRs seem to get bought up locdally, never out of the city.

  3. This is simple to solve.

All you need to do is to get the authorities of the country of interest to you to allow GC.COM access to their benchmark database for listing on the site.

    That simple. :(

And please be sure to let the rest of us know when it happens... we often hunt marks while travelling away from home.

I would do it for you... but

    A - I don't know where you are.

    B - I don't live there anyway.

C - I don't have the contacts that you do there - wherever that is.

D - I haven't found all the benchmarks here yet.

    :D:D:D

  4. OK. With a little more digging, I find that this point is located on a penninsula on what looks to be Saskatchewan River between the cities of Tobin Lake and RavenDale, at a smaller town called MOSSYVALE.

    Again, hope this helps. :D

With 20+ years of experience in MGRS, it is a simple matter for me.

  5. Hey all,

Not sure where to post this so I thought I would try here.

I need to find a city close to the following area. 30Uxv323753

    550696

Anyone who is up for the challange thanks for the help.

If the information you gave is correct, your location is

    N 53* 43.635

    W 102* 58.792

+/- a bit for rounding. I don't have a map handy at work. But you are looking at something in Canada. Perhaps with the info above someone else can give you the location.

Good luck. Hope this helps. :D

  6. Now, if they would just get the USB interface working!

USB on ExpertGPS works fine for me. Sorry to hear you are having problems.

Problems? Hmmm.... I have ExpertGPS v 1.5.3, and I don't see a way to get the USB connection active. When I try to install a new GPSr, it defaults to com-1 at 9600 baud. This is where normally run the unit. What am I missing? Manual has no notes about USB, and 1.5.3 seems to be the latest version. Tell me your secret.

    Thanks :(

EDIT: That is V 1.3.5! It is early, and I was up late. Thanks again.

  7. WELCOME HOME SIR !!!!!

Wonder if you got a photo of that mark? That I would like to see!

Thank you for putting a finish to the war I started and was not allowed to finish because GWBs daddy didn't have the guts to tell the UN to buzz off the first time.

My son Army_Scout is also home now, and trying to settle in. It takes time. He sleeps easier with my A2 next to his bed.

As for the media, I have decided that if it ain't FOX, it f---s. I don't watch the others, and I refuse to speak with them at events. No matter what you tell them, they spin it their own way. I don't buy the local paper. I do use the paper, we have puppies. I must admit the paper IS good for something. :):):)

Any media folks out there that feel offended - maybe you should look to the inside and try to change that perception. IMHO - perception IS!

AGAIN - WELCOME HOME SIR !!!!! And thanks.

  8. It all depends on how long you want to keep the log.

Ask a historian or museum curator. They will tell you PENCIL will last for quite a long time. Pen OTOH, will deteriorate within a few years.

So how long do you want the log to last?

  9. Well, it is here. And the one spec they never tell you, one that I use a lot, is not as good as the VISTA. I am disappointed! :D

Uploading a tracklog seems to be limited to 500 trackpoints. After that, the tracklog is trunucated, and you get a warning message.

The VISTA had 750 trackpoints. B)

Has anyone else noticed this? I hope Garmin will bump it up to 750 or even 1000 in a future version of the firmware. :D

  10. NO - selling them here is not a problem. That is what this area is for. Hundreds of GPSrs, and other caching related items are listed for sale here.

After reading the message title, my first I thought "dadgum, I just bought my 60CS and I could have saved money." Then I saw your price, and realized I got a better deal from a dealer. AND a free T-shirt too. :D They were out of free hats! :D

  11. By now I think everyone knows my opinion of NG TOPO support. Michael Wildshut is a real piece of work. Still, TOPO is avery fine program. So much so that I ordered my 60CS with the serial cables so I can continue to use TOPO. Michael Wildshut at TOPO support says the USB support is alreadu functional in TOPO, you just need Garmin to give you the driver for your USB cable. I bought the serial cable anyway.

    NOTE:

If you open TOPO, and pick a GPSr with settings near the one us use that is not listed, you can then click on Preferences - GPS Settings and change some of the settings to better fit your current GPSr.

    Hope this helps.

  12. PLUS this if you use Locktite you will never be able to un screw the knob and if it breaks thats bad.

LOCKTITE 242 Comes apart with normal force.

LOCKTITE 271 Requires HEAT to come apart.

242 WILL work. Of course, so will bubble gum!

  13. I now have about 45 of these covers that I don't like, If anyone wants from 1 to 6 to try just ask......and send your address. If you know of glossy and clear covers please let me know.

    Thanks

    Rick

Well, I would like to try one. It isn't that I don't believe you, just would like to see it for myself. The strong units seemed to be good on other units. Perhaps I will try one on the yellow E-Trex first. If you can spare it, send 3. One to screw up, one to practice getting it right, and a third to decide you were right anyway. :tired:

    Thanks,

  14. I just sold my Vista to a local hiker. He got all the original stuff, plus a LARGE printed copy of the manual (he wears BIG glasses) a set of 2200 mah rechargeable batteries, and a custom mil-spec carry case for $200.

My new 60CS is already 25% here.

Keep your eyes open, they are out there. Good luck.

  15. The guy at NG TOPO is full of it. A USB cable is just a passive device; the 60CS is what Windows will need the driver to communicate with. NG TOPO probably doesn't support USB transfers yet, but serial is more than likely no problem.

You are absolutely correct. Topo is a great program. But it you need tech support from them, you would be better served to bang your head against a brick wall than to contact them. I tried to explain it to the guy, but he was a dense as the above-mentioned brick wall.

Suffice it to say that TOPO does not support USB, for now. So I got the serial connections.

  16. It may also suffer from a lack of accuracy. Some of the older ones only had two digit precision, and the newer ones have 3 digit precision.

    HOWEVER....

You found a cache, didn't you? So keep going, plenty of time to upgrade later. Enjoy.
