  1. Should the travel bugs be inside the CO home when the cache is outside? Do you feel comfortable with having to go to the home owners door to retreive travel bugs? It just don't seem right for the travel bug owners to have them left in a cache inside of the house when the log is outside in another cache.

No it is not. It must have changed after publication. It will be fixed very shortly. I know somebody, why knows somebody that can make things happen.

  2. I'll give him a call in the morning.

You could also contact http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?u=reviewer+of+the+cache. They are part of the Missouri review team but might just be close enough to help out.

I Guess The Rattleing Crew must be busy. To expedite the series I went ahead and changed the coords. I used to look after the Kansas caches long time ago so I don't think I will get in too much trouble. :-)

  3. Anybody who has geocaches where recent tornadoes have hit, and especially if it is in a 'hollow tree' go and check on them. I found one that sufferd major damage.

look who's back. Nice to see you out and about again.

  4. Just read the MDC news release that starting April 30th, 2009, Missouri Department of Conservation lands will be open to Geocaching and Letterboxing. It appears that they have the same special use permit rules that the Department of Natural Resources has. It seems easy enough, short form, contact the area manager and all.

At least locally we haven't had any problems with DNR, so conservation will open up some more spots in Missouri.

Yep but we have been hiding caches with permits on conservation land in Missouri for years. The only difference is that there is a statewide written policy for it. In the past it was always up to the area manager. Some managers liked geocaching and others didnt. Now the written policy says that it is up to the area manager so there is not a whole lot of difference .

This is good news for some and bad for others. There was one part of the state where the area manager told us that any forested area was OK and no permits were needed. It was good times. Now all those caches need permits and it has become "not so good times" in that area.

  5. Sounds good but my IP has me somewhere in Missouri rather than PA. It's odd since a WhoIs look up of the IP address gives the information that matches my location...

ha, i live in Missouri but it seems to think I have moved to Texas.

I guess i need to buy a ranch now.

  6. Are there any como cachers here? We just moved up and would love to find a caching group/team.

Welcome to Columbia. I don't really know of any caching groups around Columbia, but their are allot of individuals out their caching. I typically end up running into a fellow cacher each time I am out. So far I have only taken out family and friends but always look forward to introducing others to the exciting world of geocaching.

If you hear of any local groups please let me know.

    Will do!

    See you in the green.

There are a number of folks that cache in Columbia. There was a group there but it never caught on. Most folks there belong to the St. Louis Area Geocachers (SLAGA) located at http://www.GeoStl.com . They have a very nice website. They also use a newsgroup in the area that is quite active. You can sign up for that and get in on the buzz at http://www.freelists.org/list/geocaching . Sign up, introduce yourself and you will have more info than you ever thought possible.

  7. I just got word that SYSOP, one of the founding members of the L.E.G.S. (Little Egypt Geocaching Society) and an all around great guy was killed in a motorcycle accident today.

Kendal was an amazing friend. One of those people who simply accepts you for who you are and likes you anyway. He was one of the earliest geocachers in the area and loved the game. He hosted many of the earliest Geocaching events and placed some very fun caches.

How could you not love a face like that?

    :o

I wrote back and forth to Kendal many times over the years. My condolences and prayers go out to his family and friends. He will truly be missed.

I believe that there is a ride after this one.

and when we take that ride,

there will be no more gravel surprises,

There will be no more invisible oil slicks,

There will be no more "deer appear" and there will be no more 4 wheeled weapons.

There are many images of the afterlife. Some have us as angles with big ole puffy wings, others have us hanging around listening to elevator music and others have us as spooky spirits and ghosts.

I imagine tho that we are given much more freedom than we have now, after being liberated from our fragile bodies. Flying? I believe we can willingly travel zippidey quick in 3 or more dimensions. I am sure that pilots will enjoy this freedom but I bet *Motorcyclists* will enjoy it more. We ride the twisties the pilots could never fly through. We love to see and smell the forest (and the farms). We feel the wind, rain (and bugs) on our faces. Now imaging making the same moves without the dangers of of the gravel, hidden oil, jumping deer inattentive "cage" drivers, without the fatigue and without running low on fuel. :-)

I like that picture of the afterlife. I have dreamt it many times.

Kendal is ready to ride that ride. He's practiced for it here and now he has a ticket to ride across roads that exist only in his own imagination. When I am ready to do some real riding, I know that I will have a ride leader that knows where all the good spots are.

    Godspeed SYSOP.

  8. I will be looking forward to your trip. "Cant Miss caches" is a rather tall order as there are so many good caches here. I have listed parks with a high concentration of caches, a mix of easy and hard. Looking at the list, there are a high number of "walking in the woods" kind of caches. There are caches in every park you drive past in St. Louis but these are some of the more "bang for the buck" parks.

I have been wanting to put together a series of Bookmark lists of STL caches. Best city caches, best containers, best caches for out of towners, Best walks in the woods ect, then let other folks manage a list. When anyone wanted info on "the best of..." we would have lists. So far, I have not had any takers on my bookmark idea. This may be the start of that list!

Generally, when I go out of town, I would not spend all day on one cache. We are looking for fast easy get them and go caches and there are plenty of those around . Search for 1/1's or possibly 2/2 and below and there will be hundreds of grab and go's BUT if you are here for quality these are a good place to start.

In general, Good Creative caches that offer a mix of head scratchin, trail walking and/or cleaver containers in the South and south west part of town, look for caches by RGS and Digi Guy. Shameless plug..... I still have a few caches but they are nothing special just good basic caches. "Lost Caverns" (very easy good for kids), "Freddies Hide a Way (easy in a nice park), Choices (a hard one), Eddies Picnic Friends" (Easy nice walk in the woods) , a virtual "Mienrods Curious Spot" (it is also a waymark) they are worth a look.

HappyKraut and Brawney Bear have many good caches out in St. Charles county/Weldon Springs area.

Caches listed by High density parks:

Forest Park. In the City of St. Louis. http://tinyurl.com/opnqy 20+ Caches Nice mix of caches in beautiful Forest park in the City. Some are in the zoo (free to get in).

Don't miss WhiteCliff Park and "Just an Ammo box in the woods" (RGS cache) AND "Just ANother Ammo Box in the woods" (RGS & DigiGuy cache) these 2 should NOT get together!! I had a hand in a tiny bit of the planning but not enough to take credit for anything. :-) http://tinyurl.com/rl6sh

This is another group of about 15-20 caches and will take several hours. Not as remote as Greenfelter and West Tyson but nice wooded area with trails. This park features the 1st park sponsored Geocaching hunt.

Another good park is Kirkwood park. Nice mix of caches here too. I think there are 8 or 9 caches here. Estate Sale is one that will be a head scratcher. http://tinyurl.com/okryr

Greenfelter County Park http://tinyurl.com/pk2g4 These are "walk in the woods " caches. I have one here. (Choices) that not may prople do but the folks that do it, like it. These could take all day. Nice mix of easy and hard. Terrain is a little tougher. Off trail bushwacking. Nice views.

West Tyson County Park http://tinyurl.com/p7lgu There are probably 20+ caches here. You can warm up scratching your head with an easy RGS cache, "Tail of 2 City parks" then move to Daryl and Daryl. D&D is my favorite of the well planned, puzzle, hike in the woods and find a big box" cache. It is NOT easy. D&D will take 4 or 5 hours but you will pass near the other 15+ caches in the park that you can get while you are there. The terrain here is hilly and wooded. You will do a mix of on and off trail hiking. Heck, I did D&D (twice) and it didn't kill me so it isn't that bad tho. The caches range from "go here and find a easy box " to "solve the puzzle and have a list of phone numbers ready" If you want to do D&D, drop RGS a note. He may have hints for you or we could announce a possible "group hunt" to knock out all of the caches in the park. This park would take probably all of one day. D7D is not a cache that "out of towners" generally do just because it is a big investment of time but they don't get much better anywhere. The other caches you can get while you are out make it more worthwhile.

Weldon Spring Area contain lots of caches by Happy Kraut and brawney bear. Some are easy and others hard. there is a string of OLD lost cemeteries that BruceS highlighted. they are nice.

See http://tinyurl.com/n8f2j there are more than 20 caches here and more than will fit on the map. You can scroll around and see more. This will take all day or probably 2 days.

As an exercise in cryptography look at Know Futures series of caches. Fun to read thru but I can't do any of them. I just dont know how to do it. They are the most creative caches I have read but... I cant do them. The Fascist Femme Enigma by Know Future GCPM99, The Lost Treasure of Thomas Beale by Know Future GCX1DF, Nick Danger and the Case of the Dancing Men by Know Future GCKDMF. There are many more too. Know Future is a geologist in real life and if you want to learn about geology check out his "Roadside Geology" cache. For me, it was too much driving but is very interesting stuff.

There are other areas that also contain great caches but you just cant get to everything.

There are several caches downtown now if you like urban caches. If you want to pick and choose good caches. You cant go wrong with RGS caches.

Best containers RGS and Digi guy for sure.

I will ask around to see what others think so this list may change but this will give you something to look at and links to cache pages that you can read.

  9. The cache was named Wildcat Challenge By Ron Streeter , GC2EDA . It was archived October 8, 2005 by Ron after a good 4 year run. It was placed in the town that Ron was born and raised.

"Since I placed this cache 4 years ago in the town in which I was born and raised, both my elderly parents have died. And now, so has this cache.

    Glenn,

  10. I found a travel bug hotel made from a 5 gallon bucket that was buried, however, the lid was ground level and accessible without digging anything. I found it unique, and easy to use.

Super Hero I-40 Eastbound TB Stash & Dash ?

It even says it buried on the cache page, He must have had permission to dig, OR it might be in the sand where no pointy opject was needed.

  11. I found a travel bug hotel made from a 5 gallon bucket that was buried, however, the lid was ground level and accessible without digging anything. I found it unique, and easy to use.

There are two parts to the digging problem.

You may not need to dig to get the cache out but did the cache placer have to dig to put the cache in?

Then again if he had permission to dig, lets go get the backhoe and dig a real hole. :-) Then it would be ok I suppose.

  12. Thanks Clyde.

This means that viewing the cache online will bring it up in IE.

I use Firefox. When I want to view a cache online, it opens up in Firefox just fine.

I don't have to view off line and then online. This is probably a redundant question, but is Firefox set as your default browser?

yep FF is set as my default and it opens correctly from email links and such. I will have to keep playing with it to see if I can get it to work right. I might just have to remove IE altogether maybe.

Thanks all for letting me know that it is possible.

  13. Thanks Clyde.

This means that viewing the cache online will bring it up in IE.

I just figured out that i can view the cache off line first (it will open in firefox) then I can click the "view online" link from there and it then opens in the already open firefox. one extra click but it works.

Feature request since you are here. Drop down menu to add a different user, or box in the filters to sort by a different user. For example I use GSAK all the time for geostuff but when we go caching I want to sort on what my wife hasn't found yet? I can go into the settings and manually change the user from me to her ID but it is not fast and then I have to switch it right back.

    Many thanks,

    glenn

  14. i am sure that it is here but I cant find it.

QUESTION: How can I force GSAK to open Firefox instead of IE to view on or offline pages.

All my other programs now open firefox for web links FF and it is set as my default program but IE still opens from GSAK.

I am sure that the answer is easy but i cant get it to go.

    Thanks,

    Glenn

  15. Since i could not make it, I watched every second of the video and it was almost like being there.

    They are great.
