  1. Hey all. I want to thank you all for your kind thoughts and words in regard to the drowning death of geocacher Manstone (Scott). I have passed them on to his longtime partner, Carol. I know this is short notice, but I wanted to let you all know that we are having a memorial service for him today at my mother's house in Los Gatos (my mom is one of Carol's best friends). It will be at 2:00. Here are the coordinates: N 37 14.347 W 121 56.85 All are welcome. ------------------------------------- Becky Davis Geocaching blog San Jose, CA

  3. I just found something neat. Well, several things! And I'm sure these exist elsewhere too. First of all, on the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space website: Calendar of Activities Trail Maps and Features Trail Conditions (Main website) From Santa Clara County Parks website: Calendar of Activities Trail Information (closure info; includes links to trail features page) (Main website) I thought that a lot of this information could be useful when placing caches, planning events, etc. I thought the star party and night hike ideas were pretty neat in particular. Plus there are lots of caches in these areas/parks. Thoughts? ------------------------------------- Becky Davis Geocaching blog San Jose, CA
  4. quote:Originally posted by WVDan:I think the charity should be an organization that in some way contributes to geocaching. To be a kind of thank you. Some charity that maintains hiking trails, or teaches children/people about the outdoors, orienteering, etc., or preserves lands for recreational uses. Well, what about Rails to Trails Conservancy? They certainly contribute to geocaching (as evidence by the photo of a Rails to Trails area that I saw earlier in this thread). Of course ultimately this should probably be Jeremy's decision but I thought I'd throw this in. ------------------------------------- Becky Davis Geocaching blog San Jose, CA
  5. Sorry to hear it, makaio. What a crummy week this has been. ------------------------------------- Becky Davis Geocaching blog San Jose, CA
  6. quote:Originally posted by jarja_grl:I want the answer to be Sharon Stone, but I'm afraid it might be more like Ellen Degeneres. Mostly, I just look like a jarja_grl. Please keep in mind the avatar pic is after a sweaty day of caching and hiking. I can clean up if the occasion warrants. Whew, at first I read your username as "Jar-Jar" and I was thinking you must look like this guy: Thank goodness it's "jarja" (as in Georgia, right?)! Sharon Stone, or even Ellen Degeneres, is a huge improvement over the idiot Gungan!!! ------------------------------------- Becky Davis Geocaching blog San Jose, CA

  9. (cross-posted) Geocacher manstone (Scott) a dear family friend of mine, to whom I introduced geocaching several months ago, lost his life yesterday when trying to save a fellow kayaker. The news article is here. I understand that Scott attended a couple of Fresno geocaching dinner events. He also came to Joani's Buggy Birthday Bash here in San Jose. Please keep his girlfriend Carol and his two teenaged children in your thoughts. ------------------------------------- Becky Davis Geocaching blog San Jose, CA

The news article is here. I understand that Scott attended a couple of Fresno geo-dinners in the past. He also came to one of our San Jose get-togethers (Joani's Buggy Birthday Bash). 18. I have just posted the cache cam pictures for Madonna's Gadgets. Please look and see if you recognize anyone. I know that Night Tracker and a few others are in there, but I don't know which ones they are! ------------------------------------- Becky Davis Geocaching blog San Jose, CA
  19. quote:Originally posted by Kreebelle:I've lured some of my friends in other areas to begin geocaching, and several have joined local groups of geocachers. Has anyone thought of starting a Silicon Valley Geocachers Society? I can mention of a San Francisco Bay Area Geocachers group but can't seem to find anything related specifically to the South Bay area. I think that Team Stitches On Quilts was the big proponent of the Bay Area Geocachers group, but they seem to have dropped off the face of the earth, unfortunately. I think your idea is a good one, and I have joined your Yahoogroup. You might want to talk to MIGO, CACHE, or GGA to get some tips on starting a geocaching organization. Find out how they did it etc. ------------------------------------- Becky Davis Geocaching blog San Jose, CA
  20. quote:Originally posted by The Robot Family:Hey... has anyone ever volunteered to be a "Phone-A-Friend" for the Bay Area in case someone gets stuck at a cache site? It would be nice to have an "emergency" contact person for those caches that you just can't locate even though they're right in front of your face. I had a close call today and felt a bit helpless. Fortunately the cache fell out of the structure I was under and hit me on the head and I found it! If you'd be willing to let me call you in desperate times (which I've never had in 70 caches so far... but I've been close), can you please email me with your phone number? I'm also happy to give my phone number out to less-experienced cachers who need a hint to a cache that I've been to before. Or if this all sounds like a terrible idea... just let me know. I'll only resent you for a hard cache or two. Well, I don't know why, but I seem to be the default Bay Area "phone a friend" person. Marky, bthomas, vdbalamo, kablooey, Jay Caine & Becca, LilDevil, and others have called me while out on the hunt. What confuses me is that I only gave my phone number to two of them! So maybe one of them would be able to help you with my #? Just kidding... I can provide it to you if you want. Can't guarantee I'll always be at a computer though. I can also help with webcam caches (as I did with LilDevil). I have also helped certain SoCal cachers and Indiana cachers on occasion... Sigh... HI DRU AND FUZ! ------------------------------------- Becky Davis Geocaching blog San Jose, CA

Edit: Whew, that's better. I thought maybe we were banished to the last page for some reason. Hey, there it is. Montythemule emailed me about it yesterday and I couldn't find it either. ------------------------------------- Becky Davis Geocaching blog San Jose, CA
