  1. The way the Statistics page seems to work is this: When you go to the States, and choose California, it shows you the number of caches you have found that are located in California only, then the number of caches you have placed in California, etc. It also does not include Members-Only Caches. I have no idea where it gets the "Overall caches found" number, as it is perpetually 2 too high for me. In short, take those numbers with a huge grain of salt.
  2. I put out two new caches that you Valley folks might like today. The first is in Tracy: Quarterhorse And the second is along Mines Road. I placed it after doing the caches along Del Puerto Creek. Quarter Turn Go out there and get them before the Bay Area foks do!

  4. I went today to check on a a cache that a placed a couple weeks ago. It is an easy cache in an urban setting, and got a lot of hits for about a week, then nothing. Well, the cache was missing, so I replaced it. My question is this: Why won't people log a cache as "not found" when they don't find it? I am certain that several people looked for the missing cache and could not find it, but there were no logs! As a cache owner, I would like to be informed if the cache is missing! I get the impression that people think that not-found logs count against them or something. Do you log caches as "not found" when you can't find them, or do you find it somehow shameful to not find a cache?

I'm not sure how much longer I'll be able to continue running the Palmable pages. Oh, no! Your Palmable pages are vastlysuperior to the Pocket Queries. I don't understand why Jeremy chose the path he did for those. It seems as if many people are having big troubles with the reader.
  6. Yeah, it was weird. But I didn't check before I left, so it was my own fault! Luckily the caches down there are dense. It was kind of fun going without any clue of what to look for!

  9. We went down to Monterey this weekend for my voice lesson with a Big Teacher (my voice teacher's teacher). I did a couple of caches on the way down, including leaving a new one in Gilroy at the Outlet Malls that we always have to visit. When I got to Monterey, I discovered that, for whatever reason, my Palmable Geocaching pages for Monterey hadn't loaded. So I had waypoints but no cache descriptions. Nonetheless, I got 4 out of 6 I tried. And one of the 2 I missed turns out to be buried under several inches of sand, which makes it kinda hard to find without the clue. I think I looked in the right place for the other, but I didn't see it. The good news is that apparently I sang well enough that the Big Teacher wants me back in a few weeks, so I'll do some more down there then!

  11. Traffic really sucks from Pleasanton out to the Valley, doesn't it? I don't even think about heading out that way after about 1 PM. Likewise, if I am going out caching early in the morning, I never even consider going in towards San Jose or Berkeley. Glad to hear you had a good time in Pleasanton!

With that we can easioy build an app to import .loc files into MapSend. quote:My open-source program 'gpsbabel' on sourceforge reads and writes waypoint sections just fine. You listed your program as "Unix-only," and the source is not available.
  14. Some of these are caches I placed, so beware! But these are caches I think you will enjoy: Stumped Stumped again Bog, Log, Pollywog 680 Soap Opera Black Box Stars and Stripes Twist Off Magic Trig IQ Test IQ Test 2 Centennial Curse Hope you have a nice visit!
  15. We need to see if the MapSend file format is published, or if it needs to be reverse-engineered. If the former is the case, then I will probably extend my Perl script that translates EasyGPS XML .loc files into g7towin .csv files so that it cen generate the MapSend files. But I don't have enough time to reverse-engineer the format.
  16. quote:Originally posted by Kerry: The following was done (deliberately) outside the ground station network for several reasons. 1) just to see what the "effects" would be and 2) to compare actual error (in the real world) to estimated error (EPE etc) for both standard GPS and the "affects" of just the WAAS carrier. In other words, you intentionally did a test of WAAS that was invalid. And you wanted to prove what? Geez. When I said that every test I knew of using WAAS showed improved accuracy, I assumed that people would understand that I meant every valid test. Your test is the intellectual equivalent of claiming a Ferrari is a worthless car because you tested in on a 4WD-only road and it got stuck.

  23. quote:Originally posted by Kerry: But really once manufacturers start stating accuracy figures around 3m and below then unless they also provide precision in the output to match (like at least 4 decimal minutes) there just blowing hot air. Have you looked at the NMEA string coming out of your unit lately? Didn't think so. Kerry, you seem to be missing the point of this discussion. It is not "what is the absolute accuracy of a handlheld GPS unit?" but rather "does the use of WAAS improve the accuracy of handheld GPS units?" The answer to the former question, at least for geocaching, is "no better than about 3 m." For more controlled situations, better accuracy can be achieved, but that accuracy is not really relevant to geocaching. However, the latter question is what is of interest to geocachers. There has been a great deal of nonsense posted in these forums about how some believe that the use of WAAS actually decreases accuracy because it sometimes leads to a larger "accuracy" reading on Garmin units. As you have pointed out, the "accuracy" given by these units bears little resemblance to reality. The only way to test whether WAAS improves accuracy or not is to measure a known position with WAAS on and off. Which is exactly what the person who started this thread did. He wanted to see if WAAS improved accuracy, so he measured it. As is the case with every test I have seen so far, WAAS did improve the accuracy significantly, despite the "accuracy" reading of the GPS. So your claim that WAAS is useless on handlheld devices because they don't have centimeter accuracy is demonstrably incorrect.
  24. Which do you like better, 1/5 or 5/1 caches? We have some of both around here!
  25. quote:Originally posted by GeoCrickets:On May 12th the cache was checked and it was still there. Go get them if you think you are able. I noticed that on May 12 the cache was completely buried, which is why people couldn't find it! I would expect that it is buried again by now. I don't know why, but for some reason I don't find that one terribly appealing. Seriously, I don't enjoy caching where I feel as if I am expected to tear up the surroundings to find the cache. I know that wasn't PaulWhy's intent with this cache, but it appears to be the only way to find it, given what I've read. Maybe I'm wrong; I know I will eventually try this one, but I am not terribly optimistic about finding it.
