  1. Congratulations to Rocky Pony on her 100th find in NJ - Abigails Haunted Cache by wrench001 (GC1634B).
  2. GC111JT - In NJ has some of the aspect you talk about. Never would have known about it but we found one of the TB's necessary for the find.
  3. I'm sure its been said but "Go to where the sign used to be in 1978 and turn left where the five trails merge."
  4. 5.1 Miles for a Paddle to Only 5.3 Miles for a Puzzle that I am still trying to figure out 5.8 for the nearest traditional that I have been too lazy to seek.
  5. Must...make...Bret's...wall... Reminds me of a thread awhile back about not counting a cache as found in one of the record attempts because the log was not signed. I personally put a stamp in the logbook if it is large enough and dry, the business crads don't bother me too much unless the bazy lastards did'nt take the time to sign the logbook.
  6. When the GPSr hits 100' my daughter takes off like a rabbit toward the GZ and often ends up with Cache in hand before I catch up to her.
  7. Since your GPS only supports 6 characters you can use GSAK to chop off the GC by entering "%drop2" for the waypoint name. I also use GSAK to change the waypoint name from GC to FC (Found Cache) or EC (Everone's Found). By doing this I have a list of caches that I know are unfound (GC) Found by Me (FC) or found by my wife daughter and myself (EC).
  8. I use a tungsten e2 with Cachemate and GSAK. I Load GPX files from pocket queries into GSAK which exports the .PDB file necessary for cachemate. The benefit o the tungsten E2 is its bluetooth ability. I have a very Small Holux GPS unit that connects via the bluetooth, Sirf 3 and WAAS enabled. 99% of the time I use this setup as an all in one solution. Paperless info on the PDA, cachemates nav feature to use the PDA as a gps. The 1% of the time I do not use this solution is for caches over water - I would rather drop my waterresistant Garmin in the soup than my PDA.

    Archived caches

Thank you very much, you've saved me hors. I just downloaded all of the manuals and guides from the GSAK site forum. I've only been using it for two years, guess I can finally Read the Directions. Rob

    Archived caches

I would also like to be able to run a PQ on archived caches. Once they are archived they no longer update in GSAK, I have wasted several hours looking for caches loaded in GSAK that have been archived since my last visit. Happened twice in the last week.
  11. I follow the minimalist rule. I use a PDA with a Bluetooth GPS. The PDA currently holds 3000 +/- caches, has GPS enabled Topo maps from Delorme for my usual caching areas, and the GPSr is WAAS enabled (although it rarely locks). I use Cachemate and GSAK to bring it all together. The whole bundle was less than $300 and is something I use everyday for work and play. Everything has rechargeable batteries which last from 4-8 hours of continuos bluetooth navigation. Both units will recharge in less than an hour from a car charger or regular outlet. I figure I am not wasting paper, batteries, or my own time trying to organize everything. Before going this route I used a Palm III for the cache descriptions and a Garmin 12xl for the GPS. This method was fine and I would still be using it if I had not had to get the new palm for work. The bluetooth GPS was less than $50.00 on ebay and has exceeded all expectations.
  12. Sig Items, GeoCoins, Carabiner Clips, Cold Hard US Currency (Where's George Bills) I would love to find a cahe that is not full of either: Used golf balls and pocket change, or toys discarded from a 5 year olds mouth. McToys would even be acceptable if they were in their original wrappers. Worst ever was the dog themed cahce with the slobbery tennis ball as swag. If I find a cache that seems to be family friendly I will leave ***NEW*** toys from the dollar store or sticker sheets. Other cahes get carabiners, compasses, tape measures, etc. Still trying to find the "perfect" sig item so all of your thoughts are greatly appreciated.
  13. Another option: http://www.viatekproducts.com/ProductDetai...0000-1111623369
  14. Had to chuckle at this one. "Hey Pop, these phones I stole got no dial tone". http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16725294/?GT1=8921
  15. Now this is more of a Tungsten E only question, i have a 512 mb memory card in it now, and it works fine, will this PDA accept cards like 4 GB? I want my PDA to double as my MP3 player I should work fine, I am using a 2GB card right now with no problem.
  16. Same as the above post. I went out to find a cahce without realizing the owner had replaced it and entered new coordinates, I found the remanents of the old cache. Contacted the owner and went back out and found the new one. I have found about $50.00 in cash at various sites, once found $30. in a dry riverbed, looked like it had been there for years but still worked to buy lunch. Lots of drug stuff, pipes, needles, used birthcontrol and discraded clothes. Needless to say I don't cache in sandals anymore.
  17. The only exception to the rules stated above (CO rules not game rules) are for coin swap and travel bug hotels. Many times the cache owner requests that the items be traded TB for TB or Coin for Coin so that there is always at least one traveller in the hotel. Some players find this type of cache to be a TB graveyard in that the TB's just sit there for a long time. If I find a coin or TB in a regular cache and I can help it on its mission I will alwayas take it and move it along. If I can't help fulfil the mission I will discover a coin, but not a TB. The only time I use discover for a TB is if I am out with my daughter and she finds a TB. She gets the find I get the discover.
  18. Interesting concept, although if I found a dog with a TB dog tag attached I would try to find an extra large cache to put him in.
  19. I use cachemate in conjunction with GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife). GSAK converts the .gpx files, stores them in a sortable database, allows me to add custom attributes and logs, then converts and exports caches based on my search criteria to cachemate, runs CMConvert, and adds them to the palm install app. It also uploads directly to my garmin gps and allows my to import caches directly to my Delorme software (which will also allow me to add GPS enabled mapping to my Palm). It will add icons to the software based on my settings. I consider these two tools, Cachemate and GSAK, a complete caching solution when used with my Palm, Bluetooth GPSr, and old Garmin 12xl. Total software cost was less than $30.00.
  20. I use a Bluetooth GPS, when I serach for nearest cahces from GPS it opens the port and sees the coords. It will then filter, and calculate based on your search criteria and return the nearest caches that meet the criteria. The searches take anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes while searching through 2500+ caches. You can also enter the coordinates manually from a stand alone gps or from any known location. As previously stated, Mathlib must be installed on the device.
  21. I use a Palm e2 with a Holux Bluetooth GPS. The ability to have all of my cache info, as well as a go to button in one unit is worth it. The combination cost me much less than the much lauded Garmin 60 series that so many people use (a very nice unit that will be acquired when the budget can bear). I started out (and still use) an older Garmin 12xl, the unit is strictly a GPSr, no mapping, waypoints are limited to a very short description and labels are limited to 6 digits (hence the reason the cache id's are 6 digits). I was already using the palm with cachemate to eliminate the paper and was able to get the bluetooth gps on ebay for under $50 (new). The combination works very well, I did invest in an otterbox PDA holder but only use it if it is very wet or I know the terraing will be more extreme. The box is very large, completely waterproof, well padded, and a general PIA. A decent GPS unit and an old Palm with he cache listings is a very workable solution. The all in one units don't seem to be either the best GPS or PDA and I hate having all the eggs in one basket. A used palm III or Vx is less than $25.00 on ebay and will hold hundreds, if not thousands, of cache listings.
  22. See TB # ACYTVK. My one and only geocoin. I know it has been less than 2 months but do you think this one will move? I keep updating the coin mission and description hoping the kidnapper will see it and release the coin. I am afraid to send a direct e-mail asking for the coin to be released after seenig a post in another thread where the kidnappers cut the coin in half and released it.
  23. I use ENergizer rechargeables ranging from 1600 mA to 2600 mA. These seem to work great if I charge them in the old 4 hour charger and last almost as long as regular alkalines in the GPSr. When I use the quick charger I never know how long they will last. They tend to drain very quickly in the DigiCam though. After 4 years some of my originals have started to finally hit the end of their rechargeable life. I always carry a 4 pack of duracells as a backup.
  24. As sbell stated - you can get a perfectly usable (for caching) Palm III or V series on ebay for under $20.00. If you need a PDA then the choice is yours, each has its own benefits. I have no problem handing my daughter the Palm Vx as she crosses a stream but I wouldn't do the same with my Tungsten E2.
  25. I had a ferrett once, used to bite me all the time.
