  1. Not only is the WG buck supposed to be spent after logged (which I have done, but in turn I have also created some WG bucks and put in cachces), but the WG site actually discourages having them in caches. While I imagine some of it is that they want it spent instead of jumping from geocache to geocache, the official reason they give is that they think it will encourage logging from friend/relative to friend/relative instead of between complete strangers. Though I don't think that actually happens too often.

  2. I've occasionally put in screws (not screwdrivers) and keychains. Also, there was some promotion at my wife's job where they had a lot of leftover Virgin Atlantic guides to London so I've tried to put those in regular cache boxes (some people seeing my logs may think it has become a signature item but it will eventually stop  )

Unless it is specifically a "kids item" cache, I've tried to put in both a kids and adults item. One time I have an extra New York magazine Manhattan subway guide and street address calculator (for those not in the know, there's a way for any "Manhattan avenue block" via a relatively simple mathematical formula to determine based on the address the nearest numerical cross street).

  3. It's not always true that a letterbox hybrid was a geocache first and then a letterbox. The one hybrid I know of in my area was a letterbox that a cacher looking for a site in that park learned of and asked if he could turn it into a hybrid.

Since I don't really letterbox I simply signed that log and I don't think that is a problem because it's understood that it will sometimes be accessed by geocachers and sometimes by letterboxers, but a friend of mine who does both has put a stamp when he found it.

  4. Actually, for the first time, I see enough activity in Waymarking now that many locationless have been "moved" that I can see the use in doing one the way one did a locationless cache. However, I have a few questions; I was going to create my own forum topic for it, but it applies very well to this topic:

    1) How does one create a category? I have a unique item right next to my own home that would make a neat starting point for a category that doesn't exist yet?

    2) Can I redo any past locationless logs as waymarks? For example, I did one for "Fire Fighting Vehicles" (one of the sillier ones in my view; as a locationless the rules were too easy and as a waymark....well, if I waymark a truck that is down the street but not at the firehouse, how does anyone "visit" it? but a good example for this question). Can I just take the picture and coords from my old log and add it as a waymark ?

    3) Am I doing search right? I can easily look at all 179 categories so far, but I know search doesn't completely work because if I search using "phone" as a keyword, the payphone category doesn't come up. For that matter, putting in "payphone" or "pay phone" doesn't work either. Looking through all 179 isn't so bad now, but as this grows this will be a real bugbear.

Please let me know, I was really down on this site for awhile and am still dismayed that things like "Find a McDonald's" is part of it, but I can now at least see the forest from the trees and work with it, thanks.

  5. I will log a DNF if I got to "Ground Zero" on the GPS and did at least some searching to find it.

But there are two cases where I usually do not log a DNF:

    1) If I have good reason to think that the reason for the DNF is someone else found the cache and was holding it while I searched. I learned that to be the case with a rest area micro after I DNF logged it and thought afterwards (since I was suspicous this was the case anyway) that there was really no reason to log that except to try and find out if someone had the cache at the time; after all, it's not something the owner has to go check and it really doesn't help other searchers. That said, I realize that it's hard to tell if that is the case and one other time that I was suspicious of this I did note it as well noting that there was a car parked nearby with someone in it not getting out since that cache had DNF's from people a lot more experienced than I and I couldn't say with as much certainty that someone had it.

    2) On a couple of occasions the MapQuest map fooled me. In the one example I did log (mainly to confirm my suspicion with the cache owner and because I thought it was an extreme example to note to others), the map would suggest you go up a road right to the cache. But that point was actually a high fence and the cache was on the other side of the fence. To get to the other side of the fence you have to actually drive around some side streets about a mile and park a few hundred feet away then walk up to this point. In this case it wouldn't have been obvious, but in the other case I had with this it was obvious that where I first went wasn't a place a cache would be hidden so I went back another way the next day and found it. No need there to log a DNF the day before.

  6. Since you mention New Orleans (I initially thought you meant Los Angeles when you said "LA", not "Louisiana"), is it possible this has something to do with Hurricane Katrina, etc.? Maybe all the member only caches are temporarily disabled?

  7. When I was in college I didn't use my current handle, I used 7 Wishes. It was an album by Night Ranger that I particular like (I'm sure I'm dating myself now, but no I'm not that old :-)). I came up with my currently handle about 10 years ago. So that's what I'd use. I occasionally still use it in places where hairymon is taken (it actually is on occasion, such as email addresses on Yahoo.com.....7 Wishes (and "Seven WIshes" was taken there too so I gave up) :-)

  8. Since I believe Thursday, everytime I log into the forums and click on the Search button I get the following message:

"Sorry, an error occurred. If you are unsure on how to use a feature, or don't know why you got this error message, try looking through the help files for more information.

    The error returned was:

Sorry, but you do not have permission to use this feature. If you are not logged in, you may do so using the form below if available.

Is this a sudden problem with the site? Or did searching on Forums suddenly become a Premium Member only thing? I'm curious, thanks....

  9. I have always logged the same day with two exceptions:

    1) There was a DNF in which I was highly suspicious someone had the cache at the time I went looking, I usually do not log those as DNF's, but when I didn't see absolute proof of this in the logs and a week later looked at the logs and saw that a lot more experienced cachers had DNF's on their first try at this cache I decided to log it.

    2) Right after getting my GPS I for kicks took a picture of my wife catching a fish and had the GPS in the photo. About 3 months later I learned that this is actually a locationless cache about to be archived into Waymarking with the rest of them so I logged it.

  10. I have a ferret. Though I've heard of people who actually "walk" them, we do not take him geocaching.

But I think your theory is sound. I am certainly a dog wannabe. Growing up I had a dog from when I was 6 until college. Though I live in a condo, they do allow dogs (hey they allow ferrets so I would assume dogs!), but decided we'll wait until the kids are older to get a small dog when they'll be more willing to go out with me and walk him or her.

Good luck with your Science Fair project, sorry to her your TB got "stuck".

  11. mizdeeds, maybe you are counting this when you say "a short list of virtuals" but you should try during the cold and snow this month to hit all the "locationlesses" you can as well. They are going to be archived, locked and moved to Waymarking.com in January, but until then they count towards your points total and most of them can easily be done in the winter.

  12. I have a tough time deciding on logging a DNF, but it's not because of any childish shame or anything.

I logged a DNF on an easy "highway rest stop micro" with an obvious hint (that I ignored the first time). I actually noted that I thought it would be super quick and easy, but no dice. As I suspected, it appears someone else had the cache at the time, and when I went a few weeks later, I found it very quickly.

So I'm leery to log a DNF if I suspect the reason is that someone had the cache and that it is a case where if I go back again, I'll easily find it. I'll admit I only had one other case of this, but in that instance about a week later I did log it anyway when I looked at older logs for that cache and realized that a lot of "experienced" cachers actually did DNF it and then found it on a 2nd trip, so maybe it was me this time.

I also when logging a DNF note in it to the cache owner if I honestly think it is me vs. the cache itself. I figure with only 23 finds (about half of which are virtual/locationless) I'm not ready to insist it must be the cache.

  13. I know from mile markers that the speedometer on my other car is 5mph off and the GPS proved it.

Another thing that was cool, I took it while having my 2-year old girl in a stroller and learned that I stroll her at an average of 2.8 mph
