  1. you are out of luck for the non-PM options. who knows what this new release is to allow for 'manipulation' of data. it is after the first of the month, and little forum posting about it. i would like to see the 'largest' offered in reverse ('smallest'). BDT has made a posting that there about 350 categories. the largest page only displays the largest 200. in the meantime, you can, on the directory page, display according to size....this will then place the number of waymarks after the heading. thos with none will have a zero. you will have to navigate the tree though. i use this methodology to find out what group has what number of marks, and how many the other(s) are behind (RUSBM has about 1150, where as USNRHP has about 950). when RUSBM, PA Hist Mark, & McDs were playing the leader shuffle i had told BDT that he had potentially the largest possible Waymarking category in his hands. it might still live up to than prediction, but it seems that the NRHP is going to get its turn to lead for a while.
  2. yes. 'these' hobbies will benefit from a camera, but what about the rest of your life--you dont only (want to)take pics of your 'hobbies' do you? and then, if you are not computer/camera savvy (in transferring/managing pics), you can always take the card to a photo shop and get them put on a cd. if cost i an issue, then you must look harder and limit the criteria you put in a choice. with the price of gas these days, you can get something that will suffice for the purpose of Waymarking for the price of a tank of gass (or less depending on what you drive).
  3. no, where's in a name does not move. there will just be multiples. and if penny lane has been submitted 'when' i visit it, i must log that mark, not submit my own--if the category is not to accept more than one sign per road (the number of roads with their name at more than one intersection out number those that only display the name once, right?). and does noone know about Building Buildings? that is a temporary waymark if i ever saw one. as 'that' is not 'my cup of tea', i only know of it. it was one of the first categories to go through the category creation process. i didnt vote for/against it, did you?
  4. i open the messages, to use the links to log my visit. it would be nice to know if there was a message attached (i fix the errors, if i know how), but there are some who say 'thanks for submitting this mark'. so then there should be three messages. then, the beginning of the message needs to be different--as with longer subjects, the end is often cut off in the 'inbox'. how about: -your waymark has been approved -a message has been attached to your approved waymark -your approved waymark needs minor edits
  5. yes, but there are several responses to your statements: -i too, search for 'all categories'--in order of liking, then i have been forced to branch out in category searching to continue doing so. although i HATE pdfs, if that is how i have to get a 'list' to carry with me so i 'know what to do', then so be it.....i was hoping for something more along the lines of i choose from the 'tree', and can get a printer friendly version of the choosen categories. -as far as going into town, gathering info for the 'cool thing', and coming back to post it--that is a long way off. i am rather new to GC.com, but i am sure it did not look, offer, or operate like it does over night. in all actuality, there are very few 'waymarkers' across the globe. categories are being created for 'your cool thing', but it takes someone with an intrest in that 'type of thing' and creating a group/category for it. --in your 'Waymarking' you are bound to find something someone has alredy posted. it is rather tedious to go out for the purposes of logging waymarks; if you happen to have some posted by others in your area. personally, i think that this 'locationless' Waymarking is better than when 'everything has been waymarked' and you are just visiting. in locating you are able to find something and tell the world it is there, but some of those should be great sources of 'tales' in the future (its all about the picture). -there has been question as to what the Waymarking stickers (in the 'store') are for. well, it is something like the 'visa' stickers on buisnesses. there is a category for 'coffee houses' (or even try the wifi one, might even be in both). why not get a sticker, and ask the establishment if you can place it somewhere on the premesis (make sure to write the 'WM###'(s) in the box). this would be a great way to 'recruit' fellow 'gps owners'. so then: if i (had no idea what Waymarking is, and) were in a coffee house with my laptop, and saw that sticker and a hand written code, i might go see what it is all about.......of course this would need to be obvious on the site--much in the way TBs are explained on the tags--and website. -there has been talk about 'the future of Waymarking' in refrence to camera-phones. of course they do not produce quality of pictures to satisfy creating a waymark, but visiting them? in the future, waymarkers might not need a gps to find waymarks. with the development of mapping softwares and detail of waymark descriptions, you can find the 'town civil war memorial' with litte effort, take a picture with your phone, then 'text' the picture to 'your town's civil war memorial' waymark to create your log...................noone knows what the future might bring. we can only conject.
  6. i thought it was different--as i have not found any that i felt met the specifications of the abandoned category--as with the ones in Mammoth Cave National Park. They are maintained, in that some are groomed and those in the backcountry get maintnance every few years (to protect them from their environment [trees] and prescribed burns). the description should be reworded to prevent confusion, and refrencing the other category. the abandoned category could do the same.
  7. what about mimicking some of the geocoin sites--that list all 'known' coins and icons. this could allow for the instructions for posting to be included. one would hope that TPTB are working on some scheme for this type of information/display on the official site....
  8. as a longtime historical marker, i have thought about this for some time..... my conclusion is that there be 'non-official' state marker categories as well.... the development of the 'official' marker category has taken time. some of these allow 'nonofficial' monuments, others do not. categories (mainly older ones) are being updated to become more in line with the evolving site. as the site has progressed, aspect changes have altered how things are percieved. take for example the 'art car' category. ther are less than 100 waymarkers who have more than 100 waymarks owned. as this number grows the number of categories will as well. restrictions in place have hampered the rapid creation of categories. you can always do your part and create a category for your waymarks.
  9. pics can be deleted, but not edited... and when i realize that i need to edit a log, it has been more than an hour....
  10. i am submitting a fountain - downtown lawrenceville..... 2x i hit 'save', it gave me a "you are not authorized to view this" messages. i tried to sumbit, and i got the 'outside of bounds' message as discussed above....
  11. am i the only one that sees fallicies with this argument? who wants to explain it to them?
  12. yes, content can get you higher in search results, but i think that number of times acessed (as from a google search) can also increase your 'standing'--the most popular sites with some relevance move closer to '#1'.....
  13. yes, as it is returned in search results for 'muggles' (or should we come up with another name?) they will become aware of the hobby (if that is what it is) of Waymarking..... it will also help to keep a record of things for future efforts and generations.... some of the places on the NRHP have no information on the web....but now they are getting waymark pages created for them....as people visit/log them this pool of information will grow exponentially.... i have often been criticized for not including enough info on the waymark pages--mostly due to not knowing the history or being able to find anything worth saying--but as more people become waymarkers they can provide more information and pics......as they post good facts and pics the description can be edited to reflect this..... maybe wikipedia shoud form a partnership with Waymarking (some of their coords are not where 'they should be'; in refrence to towns...). for instance: they have the NRHP listed on their site, but nothing more.....just about every Waymarking category could be found on their site, why not link to it.....there is the wiki Waymarking category, and everything that the site says could be submitted, if not in a more specific category too..... when will WM.com be a great source to do research? i bet it already contains enough info to write several (college level) essays.....
  14. lets begin by describing the two different types of loga being discussed.... the OP was talking about armchair logs - those where the person obviously had not been there, and in this specific case, there were waymarks, owned by three different people, in three DIFFERENT states. a seperate issue are insufficient logs - those that are lacking a requirement (often a pic).... it is one thing to guess what date you went to a place years before WM.com, it is another to say you went somewhere you never did.....
  15. all pics dont need the gps.....just a proof shot--when requested.... the rest is up to the logger....
  16. but, to my knowledge, all the rest stops on the united states interstate system are run by the government.....the only overlapping would be those along state lines, welcoming you and providing information about the state (they have info about everything tourists do in the state)....
  17. or just add a column (similar to caches owned and waymarks/caches 'found') that would say you have already voted.....that should be simple enough.....
  18. i too feel that i cannot lead this group. i would be happy to facilitate creation/management of the category, and of course i would post some marks and visit others...... it ahould also turn out to be a global category (for those american category 'haters')...... and when finished creating this, the creation of a board shop would be an incredable companion (they are often close to the parks as well.....)
  19. and if it becomes automatic to be away(note - automatic approval is said to be retiring, but havent we heard that before?), it should be automatic to be back....
  20. how about moving it from the group profile page (you have to set 'away/here' for each group, do you not)? then one click, from a central location would then set them all...... then add the date that away was set, and give a block to write a note in (ie: i am going on vacation for XXXXX amount of time.)....then you would know to send a message to the next on the list.... or you could just add a 'send a message to the group' link on the group page, so that non-members can send the same message to all members with one click (insead of having to copy and send it to each member)....
  21. fine & dandy, but how would you know of the changes? a record needs to be kept. this could also show the evolution of a category--as the Recovered US Benchmark category begain with a very basic submittal form but now has a quite complex set of variables. the 'god' category has even added some new check boxes recently......
  22. i would like to bring up a word that appears on EVERY page at WM.com: BETA the site is still in development. obviously this is not GC.com. us waymarkers are doing our part to make it the best we can before the world starts using it. the few that have remained active in the WM.com world know that you have to accept some of the BS that has been going around. Waymarking will never be like geocaching. they have very similar aspects, but are each their own. invividuals. we are all individuals. misunderstandings, misconceptions and misers are frequent. we work it out. Waymarking is a democratic arena. we like to speak, we like to listen, we like to take action on our ideas. there is always the 'electoral college' to put a kink in our plans, but we are doing what we can to discard that B word that seems to inhibit new Waymarking habits from forming. if you think it is bad now, you should have been a user a year ago.....
  23. free maps? brochures/phamplets? is the food a restruant or vending machines? is your stay limited (ie: max hours then you must leave)? many dual marks in the highway rest stop category....
