  1. that totally sucks to the utmost.... so if you only failed PR because of one vote, and all you really needed was a little editing, you must 'start over'... what is 'starting over'--at what point do you restart? the group should remain, and you have a blank 'create a category' page? no mater whay the reason you failed the vote (missed by one vote, recieved enough suggestions to fix problems, or just plain denied creation), the category should remain as submitted--just like waymarks that are denied are treated. if you 'lose the work' and have comments about it, they then become useless. there has been talk of 'tracking' category editing, what about tracking voting? this can also help to inform about participation levels. the OP category was created and submitted for review (thus all officers approved), it fails but has useful comments. the group then edits/corrects it and it is put out for review again. other than the leader sending the result email to the group, they have no access to that information. votes put before the group are retained, why not the community?
  2. i would also like to see the greek alphabet in a dropdown for the 'frat house' category biosearch started....
  3. the number of waymarks submitted has tapered off some, but as stated above, you look for what you like. and each time you find one, one would have to 'travel further' for the next one (historical markers & NRHP are quite distribuited amongst the landscape). there was a '10,000 marks' thread, what happened to it? and no '20,000' postings? 200 in a day, you say. in how many categories, by how many users? Go ahead and create your last two. We decided that the limit will be increased to 10 categories in the next release since it appears our most prolific contributors are topped out. 10. now that seems like a nice number. that should suffice for eternity. you should be able to give them away to create more.....but what about the math? not everyone on the planet will waymark, of those that do, how many will be premium members & 'want to manage a category'? leading 10 groups might mean that you will take less of a role in others' categories. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=143951
  4. I not sure what you mean by the above statement. The airports category doesn't exclude any airports. If you think it does exclude it, send me the specifics of your airport and I'll let you know for sure. i think they are trying to say that they would like you (the airport category) to add a variable so that they might be differentiated from the other airports--through the use of the mythical 'variable search'?....maybe even mention them in the category description....
  5. you are the most prominent waymarker in canada.....
  6. i was trying to state that equality is the way to go, and taking it further to display the compound location as well.... when i see ontario, i know it is a province in canada, but this is from my geographical history classes (it's close). other countries, i would not be able to place the information display for other countries. on the waymark page it has the 'state, country' display, why not include this on the other pages too?
  7. a point to make is that: leaders can promote with no vote. officers can submit a vote to promote.
  8. the argument i see is that those in the 'US' will [primarily] use 'their' category, while someone visiting the US [will] primarily be a participant in the 'world' category. -the US group was first--great idea for a category. -the World was second--great way to make it global. -but there will be no more--in no way can you create the 'New Zealand National Parks' category, it is just a variable for the 'National Parks of the World' category......sorry BQ once again i will submit Benchmarks as a good example. It is a selection of specific instances of that type of item. this tree is able to have its branches move and grow 'as we please'.....
  9. why not have it say that the library is in "state/province, country"? and is there not a geographical education aspect to this? along these lines, when submitting a waymark, can the coords not just be used to discern the geographic location? occasionally i forget to choose a state, and i happen to notice at some point to change it. with all the alerts can there not be some here? at least flag it when the coords do not match the other choices--south carolina coords in alabama, or in the middle of the ocean.
  10. whit the state of Waymarking in my area i: geocache (or whenever i move about), looking for things to submit to Waymarking. i monitor 'my area' for new marks to 'visit', and when i travel i use a geocache to search the coords for wamarks to 'visit'. seems like a good place to insert the info i have--ranking for # of waymarks submitted/approved. there are more than 200 users, it is just that 200 register in the results. i have no information on visiting waymarkers. this is only waymark owners. Though there are 'hundreds' of waymarkers, there are few 'regulars'--less than fifty have triple digit numbers (a rate of submitting 8.5 waymarks a month=2 a week); a note about 'us', is that 'we' have been 'users' for a a full calander year. the Waymarking 'world' has been growing for a short time. with new visitors (mostly cachers finding a link to it, or maybe some special group that uses the 'Waymarking game' to further their other pursits: See ANWB Paddenstoelen), to the site and each time there is a new 'update' to the site those that were disintrested might become more acquainted. the numbers are wrong.....this # includes all waymarks you have ever created ('archived', maybe 'saved but not submitted'). when i click on 'my waymarks' it shows a number lower than this, and of these some are 'S N S', 'approved', and 'denied' but being saved for the right category to appear...... 11. it does seem that these are the 2 categories that will settle this sort of issue. it does seem to be a bit too much overlapping. however this is a good opportunity to mention subcategories. coule it be that there is a national park category that contains a sub category for each nation. TPTB would still 'lead' the national park 'group', and then user groups would manage/create the nation's category--thus, each could have their own icon (different things need different icons). on the other hand, the US category is 'out of line', and needs to become a variable of the 'world' category--as run by the Department of the Interior's National Park Service.
  12. it should get through the system well.... and my local county park system has a nature center...
  13. no, back in the 'conversion' days it was acceptable to post your LC find here--they just moved....many of the LC pages probably still state this. armcharing is more of a never been, dont plan on going......if you want to armchair it, post notes.
  14. there needs to be some sort of further notifications about pending votes..... similar to the 'there are new categories for peer review' link. and then maybe another email the day before the vote ends, stating you havent voted and need to.... as for being 'away', that is too cumbersome of a process, and not all may realize this function....and thenremember to check it....
  15. as silverquill stated, there are many different possible types of 'temporary' waymarks. -moving (local & long distance) +'art cars', kissmobile -annual ('seasonal'), in the same location +berry picking, 'air' shows, fairs, and festivals (georgia has an oktoberfest in Helen) -annual ('seasonal'), in a different location +dragon*con (?, it is coming to ATL soon), and other specialty-type 'confrences' it is not 'if' there is someone (a group) wants to include something on Waymarking, it is 'when'. lat/lon are not about 'there: now and always.', they are about 'where: when, since, and until?'. the site has only been operational for a year, but very few marks are truly permanent. McDonalds do close, and those that are waymarked will need their pages archived. temporary is such a harsh word for such a broad context. it is more like a subheading/category. is there not a better word to describe these things? why is a 'coord pallandrom' a 'game' anyway? it might be construed as a game to figure out 'where' they are, but it is no different than any other waymark to log.....
  16. i like the rollover balloons. and can the search apply to more than locations? what about variable searching/election to display? i think 'our' issue with this process is this 'major' overhaul.....otherwise we have been getting bits and pieces along the way. for months now, everything has been included in this update. we have had nothing but new categories....
  17. the catalogue, as you say, will also help all waymarkers....there are 2 types of waymarkers. (1)the most prevalant kind at the moment are the 'finders'. the website is set up more for people to find and post waymarks (and create places to put them). this Waymarking type will have to evolve (more) as Waymarking grows older, and it is more concerned with requirements for submitting waymarks--though often have enough [or can work it into the routine] to also log the waymark; you do visit it in order to waymark, whichever version you are (2)the other type is the 'logger'. this is a different type of Waymarking. they, as like caching, get coords from the site and the few rules about visiting. there are few with the 'answer the ?' stipulation, most need a pic of some sort (you do intend to visit it, you 'set out' to do so, why not take a pic of it) [variations on 'take your picture there', and a few have no requirements. if you go to visit something (especially 'on vacation') it might need a picture taken of it. yes, it does suck (WM.com) on a slow connection. what i had to do was, photoshop (shrink) the image--to not have the upload time out. for quite a while i coudnt even get the GC.com 'upload pic' page to even load. you gotta do what you gotta do. at least on that site i can rely on my 'signature' (which i also have a pic of), or even upload at a later date..... read further in the forums and you should notice that the site is due for a massive update. issues, such as you speak of, are being resolved as we breathe (supposedly). maybe some of your ideas will be incorporated. Waymarking is different than caching, in that, you should know more about what you are setting out to find. the category (bushwacking for a RUSB vs. walking 6 blocks to the wifi/coffee house) and region (rural vs urban) of search should determine what 'sort of experience' you are to have. it might seem odd to take your pic in the coffee house, but you can take a pic of the storefront. in this respect, you can more determine what type of journey you want to have. in short summarization: welcome to the world of Waymarking. it is [primarily] set up for 'finders/creators' and takes time/research to waymark at all--read the categories and descriptions before you 'do anything', and the forums are a good source of discussion on matters at hand. issues/suggestions are arising and resolving 'every day'. if you dont like it now, come back occasionally. it will one day be able to break out from under its older brothers shadow.
  18. i though of a nother category of possible 'temporary waymarks': Campgrounds on the record mark page it states "Seasonal: If this is a seasonal campground, please enter the start and end dates of availability."and then has drop dont boxes for the starting and ending months, days, and years. i have always had an issue with this, including the year, because the mark will need updating 'every year' to 'roll that box over'. however, if it were just the month and day, it would apply to all years. this also brings the different definitions of 'temporary' and 'seasonal' into play. 'seasonal' is not really the issue here, but how can these marks be obviously different that 'year round' marks? 'temporary' is a big issue. everything is temporary (in the long run), but how temporary is temporary? in the case of the 'moving art cars', is that not a fun 'game'. the waymark is 'in the town' where the owner resides. it will temporarily be in 'all areas of town'. the logs would be a great way to see where/what others are doing when they 'find it'. but would this not be designated 'locationless Waymarking'? each log should have a different set of coords (unless they park in the SAME SPOT for home/work). then each waymark would have its 'own map' so you could see the different finds, and, thus, a range for 'searching'. i would suggest that the 'temporary category' be 'art cars' and the other be 'static art cars'..... i think that through category (and 'tree) creation/adjustment, what 'we all loved' about LCs can become available here. once again i will mention the 'B' word--BETA. WM.com lacks a lot of user interface when compared to GC.com. for the moment we are regulated to READING the waymark description to figure out the details (hours or operation and other specifics). TPTB do have aspirations (don't they) to have an attribute table on the waymark pages (though the list will have to be much different). also, on the 'search page', there is space as with the GC.com pages for 'size' and 'difficulty'. these spaces can include notations that will let you know more 'info' on the mark with just a glance. overall, WM.com has made large strides over the past year. the big hurdles have taken some time to cross. it is the little things like 'attribute icons' that will prevent it from achieving 'gamma' status.
  19. No decision yet on whether it will come out of beta. We'll probably let you guys decide that after you play with the new version. We're hoping to have it in production by the beginning of next month. it has been a month, and it is almost halfway through 'that month'. we could at least have a weekly teaser or something.....
  20. this might apply to travel bugs travelling 'abroad' as well. categories of waymarks found outside english speaking countries are being formed, and waymarks are being submitted to 'english based' categories in non-english speaking countries, therefore, something should be addressed to correct the language barrier. Waymarking is 'running on a wikipedia like process' [did you hear the story on NPR this morning?]. when navigating that site, your 'first click' is to choose a language. it is language-centric to make waymarkers include 'english' on their pages--and it will add clutter to the page. this was scripted after i viewed a library description that was not in english. it is virtually useless to me. it could not even be about the library in question. yes, one could find an online translator, but this just adds more to the process. much like the 'encrypt/decrypt' function on logs, there should be a function to 'translate/untranslate' on logs, cache pages, waymark descriptions, and any other page on a Groundspeak website. it would be swell to say 'only english' but what if one wants to see that it of a non-english origin, and see the original text.
  21. as in 'decorated for halloween' you mean that: one 'pays a fee' and takes a 'guided tour' or just plain 'decorated'? i would think that the 'guided tour' houses would get their on category (in the 'temporary' section). for the most part, are they not in the same location each year, it is just that they are only open approximately september to november. and thus, would only 'appear on the map' during that 'season'.
  22. check out the airport category first (search for it). this is a pretty inclusive category (they accept helipads as well). maybe you can get them to add a variable for this idea.
  23. how about providing some examples (links/images with 'description')? are these going to be 'publicly accessable'?
  24. yes, the 'deletion' of logs is possible, but it is wrong to delete logs with no good reason. this thread was doing research on the incident and checking to see how 'regular' the 'occurence' was. at this point, i let logs to my marks go, unless there is reason to be suspiscious. several of the posters here have sent PM discussing the OP, and logs have been deleted (no way could they have been in 3 states in the same day). and if someone were to visit 'those marks', they would have visited others in the area......
