  1. do very many coins get sold on e-bay that have been registered or activated? i could see how someone might keep an activated coin in there personal collections and putting your name or an X on them it might raise some eyebrows if you start showing them off.

I don't think marking them will deter anyone from stealing it, but good luck selling it! :P

sounds to me the only way to not have a coin stolen is to copy it, so that if more copies are needed--after it is stolen--it is easily fixable.

no matter what you do to something, there is someone who will steal it.

i have stolen many things in my life--some can only be shown to those i trust--if i wanted it bad enough i took it. defacing it only meant it wasn't pretty in my displaying.

the "x" is too vague. and if you etch your name on the coin--those that steal it would have motivation to steal all of your 'collection' to make their collection 'whole' (ie: i have got one of each kind of coin 'chapterhouseinc' has released. i can't wait for him to put out another so i can go get it).

this is the error message i got 2x when uploading a pic. i do not believe that it is a dial up issue, i have done it before.

just tried to upload pic. still getting error message.

how is it i can insert that page here?

  3. We have people in our neck of the woods who are not even regular geocachers, but have a GPS and find "open to all" caches. They would steal something like this instantly. It wouldn't last a week here. It's a shame, but the truth.

i would venture that they come from your area out to the rest of the state. not the other way around.

  5. yea, now i am waiting on the Quarry category owner's approval of my 11.1.2005 waymark.

have sent an email, no response, and they log in regularly--but is that the GC.com or WM.com login date on the profile?

some category owners are on top of things (asking for the photo while it is uploading--yes i had this happen), others are normal (every few days), and then the rare ones.

if one does not want to manage their category so adamently, then they should set it to accept ALL waymarks submitted nd let the peer review manage the category. they might could get away with 'fake marks' for now, but it would be eventually found out [when someone visits it].

  6. The question of releasing geoclones (I *really like* that term) instead of the real thing recently came up in our local forums. Me personally, I would not take and log a geoclone coin, but instead leave it for someone else.

that is a personal preferance, but i am sure that someone would eventually pick it up.

is it not part of the game to move them around --if it can be helped by you--and there are those out there who only find caches, not TBs or Coins.

should they all be treated the same, if it is a coin or a copy it is still a bug with a purpose--to travel.

and what did your local forum come to a decision on about them? everyone has their own idea.

maybe we should get the BCS (bown championship series, for all non-NCAA football fans) committee involved; everyone has their own idea about that too.

  7. I can't see why anyone would care what I did with my own coins. If I want to place a paper copy of my coin in every cache I visit, why would anyone care? Is there a prize I would be cheating someone of? Would I clog the TB computers? Would I disappoint the people who sought the cache so they could steal my coin?

I'm not understanding the downside.

It seems that too many people are too interested in what other people do. No one ever suggests rule changes to stop themselves from doing something. They always suggest changes to stop someone else. Maybe everyone minding his or her own business would be the way to go?

i have decided to laminate copies of the coins and send them out:

    1) so that they cannot be stolen. and if the 'clone' is stolen, i can make another so that it might continue the journey.

    2) it does not matter what you do as long as it does NOT affect others. staeling TBs and coins affects others--how can you replace a stolen coin? with a stolen clone, you just make another. if you no longer have the coin you are SOL and out some $ too.

    3) i should not have to advertise that it is NOT THE COIN. if the thiefs travel a great distance to steal something that is not what they expected, maybe they will stop this sort of activity. i even put some notes in the baggies saying i was sorry for them to try to steal my coin that isn't there, and that they should just move it like they are supposed to.

    4) yes, nothing can compare to finding a COIN. but i would rather find a copy--they are extremely lifelike--than just a piece of paper with the #. you can still see the coin, and that is what counts as a 'spot' does it not?

amen brother. you do your thing i'll do mine. we will all get along.

i have only had one of my coins picked up--and it moved 97 miles. maybe they have been to the cache(s) and they are stolen. guess i will eventually find out.

notice: it is primarily AMERICANS stealing coins. other countries appreciate coins for hat they are, and they are just another TB--owned by someone else, i just have the pleasure of seeing it and helping it along it's journey.

  8. yea, but there is the McDs category....like they need advertising....it is more like, this is a cool place to stay or it is just a place to stay.

so then here in athens: the hotel pages would say: this is nice if seeing a concert at....., this has good shopping access, you car might get broken into here, etc....the locals know more than travelers about these sorts of things. just my interpretation. i was just meaning that if there is a lodgings category, then all types of lodgings should be permitted.

  9. I have a solution to virtual logging just to get the icon in your profile. They could change the profile appearance to one that would show ALL the icons in EVERYONE'S profile, on both sides. But those that you never found/owned, would have a zero next to them. :P

    i would go for that.

  10. yea, sometimes in the car on the way to the next cache i think about what i did. i then try to make amends in the next cache trading--especially if it has the same owner.

as for things in cache, other than the log, it is open game. trade for it. if it might be trackable, bring it home and log it. try to do something with it's goal (take a pic to post), and place it in a relevant cache.

if it is not something i WANT i do not take it. i have lots of swag type stuff i will leave. rarely do i TNLN.

i thought the premise was to find new caches, move TBs, and trade 'stuff'. "one man's trash is another's treasure." you got junk i want, i got junk you want. it just happens to take place in random, often remote, places in a very random selection.

i will have to start carrying my trades with me incase i do find a coin. could i hope for a Lacy?

  11. i just checked on a virtual coin i know of...it is still open for logging.

it seems that there should be a check system in place that would analyze TB and Coin pages looking for absurd travels (several countries in the same date, or racking up impossible miles in a 24 hour period). This would then be a 'new geocaching.com position'. all TBs/Coins that "throw up the red flag" and this position will approve the transaction(s) or lock the logging.

note: i have no experience with logging things at meets. it seems to me that if a TB/Coin is going to be logged as a visit (spot?)--not a drop or pickup--would the 'presenter' not have it in their inventory, and then the first logger would grab it, retaining it in their inventory until the next logger grabs it. this would eliminate the need to drop it somewhere--being a 'rookie' what if i drop it in the wrong place in the owner's eyes or retain it as above. then after the presenter decides that all logs are posted, grab it back.

can TBs not borrow from Waymarking, and get a VISIT. if i see it, feel it, touch it, and get the # for it, did we not visit?

why would you want to log all the TBs at a meet? just the ones you trade would be fine. coins are another story, i would want to log as many as i could--yes i like the icons. i have just found a jeep (2004), and therefore don't fully get them yet, and don't understand why people keep them and take them to events for mass logging. i thought you found it, did some tasks (to enter the contest), and left it somewhere. is that not what caching is about--finding things?

maybe "personal" TBs and Coins, we all have them, could get a special icon. i have laminated all of my coins so far--except the personals--and plan on releasing them. but if i take my personal coin(s) to a meet for people to "spot/visit", it would be obvious they did not find it in a cache.

i have been to quite a few caches in the area that 'had a coin'--they are still in there too--but it had been abducted. i guess cachers see the coin on the site, and go get it. what is the point of having a coin that was stolen (or a travel bug)? is it really that great of a toy that you steal it, and it 'dies'. i just released some TBs, none have been picked up yet (?), and i have coins too--1 has been moved. so are the thiefs going to steal my laminated pieces of paper, out of greed or spite, or will they move them on like sensible cachers would [move the REAL coins]? I, personally, never feel that the REAL coins will ever be safe in caches--maybe the USA ones since there are "enough" out there.

As a collectable coin--they will always be colleced. imagine a cacher in 50 years finding a 2005 moun10bike (sorry if i messed it up) in a cache. the tough thing is assigning a value on them. currency is related to it's face value, year of manufacture, and number minted. Geocoins do not have a face value, and there are so many variations of the other variables it is insane.

    Case One

I have a Tb or Geocoin. I take it to events with me. If people come up and ask to see it and I give them the number would this be ok?

    seems to be common practice.

    Case two

I have a cache. If you find the cache I have a Tb or Geocoin number listed in the container. You can log it. Will this work?

    why would you do this?

    Case three

Im sure this is ok but wanted to throw it out there anyways. You make a copy of a geocoin have it laminated send it out that way. Sure this is ok but like I said just throwing it out there.

i do this in the hopes that my coins will travel, and in they event that they are stolen, i can send out "version 2.0" and so on, until i die. if enough people started doing this, the thiefs would not 'know where to look' and might cease their activity. once the thefts are 'eradicated' us cachers could start releasing the real ones (sparingly) so that they are hidden amongst the fake ones.

    Case four

Back to the event thing. I was thinking of taking a TB and taking it and cutting it in half. Give half to my wife and the other half I would have. To log it you need to talk to us both.

sounds like a great idea. i think i will have to do that. in order to log "ChapterhouseInc" you have to meet both of us.
