  1. I know some cameras now come with built-in GPS sensors, so that the ELIX file stores your location. Now I've heard a rumor that "some cameras" also have an orientation feature - - i.e., it records whether you're facing east or west, and possibly even what zoom power you are using. Questions: 1. Is anyone aware of such a camera; which manufacturer and models? 2. I am interested in a simple compact camera with GPS, such as the Panasonic ZS10. I would appreciate any recommendations. It does NOT have to have the orientation (direction the camera is pointing) feature.
  2. Ahh, Now you're cookin'! Good Ideas, Max; Thanks.
  3. I'm not sure I like the Scavenger Hunt dynamics. I thought you might be able to generate a list pre-selected waymarks and make an interesting route out of them, but I see it doesn't work like that. There are a dozen waymarks along one very historic and interesting street in my home town, and I was hoping to make a list of "12 in 20" - - 12 waymarks you could complete in under 20 minutes, but there is no way to do that in the current system. Any ideas?
  4. Is it OK to log the waymarks that you yourself have generated?
  5. I've noticed there is no category for prisons. Is there a reason for that? I know in my home town they don't like to have people photograph prison guards or employees, as it can lead to intimidation. Does that apply to prisons as waymarks too? Is anyone, any group, currently petitioning to add prisons or jails as a category?
  6. How do I add photos to my Waymarking gallery. I have posted several photos to various waymarks; how do I import them to my gallery? Must gallery photos be limited to those I've posted to waymarks?
  7. The number 1 favorite things (from feedback) that I get is that I leave small packets of thick 4-mil plastic bags that can be used to protect logs from water damage. In my area, more than half the logs in caches get wet due to flimsy plastic bags falling apart. You can buy 4-mil or even 6-mil think plastic bags on the internet - packs of 100 for just a few dollars. I bought several different sizes, but the 1-inch by 2-inch seem most popular. At the same time I keep a supply of the smallest bags including a clean, dry empty log for those cases where the log is full. Cache owners seem to love it. I also buy foreign coins from a coin dealer; they are cheap and you can buy the by the pound, and they fit in even the smaller caches. My 2-cents worth.
  8. OK, I could not find a cache. The CO indicates it's still in the correct location. I go back again and this time I discover it. Question: Once I've logged the find, should I go back and delete the original DNF? Or leave both logs intact?
  9. Thanks for your help. Yes, for some reason this type of cache has piqued my interest, And YES! The folks here are exceedingly helpful and knowledgeable, not to mention friendly. Their (your) assistance has brought me back from the brink of abandoning the idea altogether. I hope with my limited programming knowledge I can create some cartridges in my home town.
  10. Yes, I clicked on several of your (Ranger Fox) links, and they were exceptionally helpful. Thanks. The members hold a wealth of information. Thanks Goodness for the forums.
  11. Hmm! Maybe I can forward that response to the Wherigo.com website and save millions of people the frustration I felt. Dang! There's that sarcasm again. I must be getting old!
  12. Wow! VERY impressed with your answers (Geo-Magician!) and a big THANKS! Thoughtful and accurate. Helpful and friendly, and I noticed you gracefully ignored my sarcasm, ha,ha! These forums are a wonderful resource, so thanks to all of you.
  13. Very Discouraging trying to figure this out!!!! Can ANYONE give me a straight answer as to how to get going on Wherigo? When I look for hardware advice all I see is a post dated July, 2008. Is anything new since then? What is the simplest method to get going? (Android smart phone with GPS?) What is the cheapest method to get going? (Used Garmin iQue M5?) What is the most common hardware/software combination to play the game? Is the Android "Whereyougo" the same thing as Wherigo? Can I get an Android GPS device without paying for monthly telephone service? I would VERY MUCH appreciate any enlightenment you can offer. Thanks in advance.
  14. What it the status of Wherigo? Does it work on any current Garmins or DeLormes? I'm hearing mixed messages. Has Garmin dropped it? If I have a Garmin GPSMAPS 62 can that be added. What other hardware does Wherigo play on?
  15. Couple variations. Stamp is from paperangel.com
  16. I got my stamp from paperangel.com, and used craft wooden nickels, then painted some lead fishing weight a gold foil color and attached them to my nickels. Enjoy!
  17. I also like to use "wooden nickel" signature items. I found a great place to order round stamps that fit on the wooden blanks and the designs seem to fit geocaching. Got this from paperangel.com [/img]
  18. You can make "wooden nickel" signature items using either a hand-made or commercial rubber stamp. I used www.paperangel.com rubber stamps, as they make round designs that are particularly suited to geocaching themes and just fit on the craft-sized wooden nickels.
  19. Wow, JasonJohn, sound like quite an adventure. Yeah, that happens sometimes. I was on a cache near prison grounds, and found myself surrounded by a swarm of gun-toting deputies. It seems conspirators will often hide drugs near the prisons so that when trustees are working on the grounds they can retrieve drugs and contraband etc. Well, like you, I learned one important lesson: You cannot actually, physically die of embarrassment!
  20. I'm 69 and LOVE the hobby. It gets me off the couch and I've lost 5 pounds so far. Great hobby to stay fit. Just be careful of physical hazards - falls and poison oak. Enjoy! Just completed 500!
  21. As others here have mentioned, a single DNF usually will not deter me, but a series of recent ones will. It depends on the difficulty too. A 4 difficulty with every 5-th attempt or so a DNF would actually be a challenge for me. More important to me is if there is poison oak around.
  22. That's my favorite too. I go to the local coin shop where they have bins full of foreign coins that they sell by the pound. These fit my 3 criteria: that they be cheap, interesting, and fit into small containers. I once went metal detecting and found what looked like a $100 Mexican gold coin. I found out later they are worth about 20-cents each. I got a bunch of them the last visit to the coin shop, and I cleaned them up. Let someone ELSE get the cheap (but temporary) thrill of thinking they hit the jackpot!
  23. Just found a City of Roseville, CA benchmark. I don't see it in any databases. How do I log it? What do I do with it?
