  1. I upgraded my Venture to the 2.34 firmware from the Garmin site last week; it includes a WAAS tweak. I was able to get to 7 foot accuracy with a clear sky and wide horizon.

Of course, when I get under that tree cover I'm, well, in the woods icon_smile.gif

  3. You guys are giving me a great idea for a signature item...mini-urns of my ashes. icon_wink.gif Of course I'd need somebody else to leave them for me. So would the signature item be mine or theirs?

Maybe I could get a limited edition travel bug with bits of my ashes embedded...?

Hope this humor isn't too macabre. I appreciate it whenever we get a chance to talk about death a little. It seems the be the biggest area of denial in our culture. I don't want to hasten the day, but I want to be as fully aware of what's happening when it comes. Talking and joking about it in the meantime helps to lessen the anxiety.

But back to my ashes...when life, usable organs, anything researchable is gone, it's about as useful as a junked car. When I cash in my chips, trash me out.

  5. Most virtuals are within the normal use restrictions of park visitors (Marty noted some possible causes for exceptions). It seems reasonable to me to go ahead without asking park personnel. This strikes me as one of those situations wherein if you ask representatives of a beaurocracy a question and they don't have authority to say yes, they almost have to say no. CYA.

It sounds like the owner of the cache in question has longer-range goals in terms of having a working relationship with this park's supervisors...that may merit a strategic decision to cooperate with their request to withdraw the cache for the time being.

I'm in the middle of assembling a multi-virtual on a nearby national park. I am making a good-faith effort to construct it in such a manner that the NPS should have no cause for concern. Not being aware of any need to bother them with this, I don't plan to ask them or tell them about it.

  6. Personally, I'd like to see more celebration at funerals and less seriousness. But you do rock the boat a bit when you challenge peoples' expectations.

My wife (who has given more thought to the matter than I) wants at her funeral to raffle off her art works (benefits to charity). She also plans to distribute T-shirts that say "I went to Nan's funeral and all I got was this crummy t-shirt!"

OK, technically she wants *me* or somebody else to do those things, as she has other commitments at the time.

  8. Pocket queries pretty much do what I am looking for, bravo! I found one little thing that I pass along for what it's worth...

Having read in this thread that the beta won't let you delete a query, I modified a saved query rather than create a new one, changing the name of the search and the zip code. The returned .loc and .prc files have the same name as my original query. That's no problem for opening into ExpertGPS, but I presumed I had to change the prc file to prevent overwriting my original ebook download on the pda.

Of course it's easy to change the prc file name before moving it to the pda, and I would suppose creating a new query gives a unique name. But, in this instance, it was a little bump on an otherwise marvelously smooth information transfer. Thanks, guys.

  9. We've had a Kodak DC280 (2.1MP) which has been versitile for us the past few years, but the After Hours review of mini digital cameras in the current (July 2002) issue of PC Magazine has me thinking of a lightweight camera specificly for geocaching excursions. I'm smitten with the $40 SiPix StyleCam Blink, which measures a little over 2" X 2" X 1/2", and the Aiptek Mini PenCam ($100, but 1.3 megapixel resolution and a macro mode would work better for benchmark closeups). There's also the Casio Wrist Camera (an only slightly clunky wrist watch/camera combo listing for $199), and 3 other offerings reviewed. Most of them only do VGA resolution (640 X 480), but 4 of the 6 cameras reviewed came in at $100 or less.

I wouldn't use these for higher quality pics; for one's only camera, I'd recommend something better. For a specialty niche, I wa-a-a-nt one! icon_smile.gif

  11. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but at this point I think the only way is to look at them page by page. If someone has found it (or made any other comment), there will be a log on the page just like the cache pages.

If you are not seeing anything now, it is probably because no one has visited them yet. Once you log a find (or no-find), you should see what happens. Benchmarks are a new thing here, so the vast majority have not yet been sought (by us, anyway).

  12. I'm experiencing the same problem, on both of my computers. Think I'll dinker less on this end and keep an eye on the forums.

  13. Do you have a pop-up window suppressor running? I had this problem (down to the "Boing"), and I realized that my Pop-Up Stopper was preventing an upload progress window from appearing. If so, simply de-activate the suppression (or, if you are using the same software as I, hold down the control or shift key while clicking on the upload button.

  14. I would echo DisQuoi's statements. We were at a boulderfield cache site recently...the hint said the cache was hidden "under two rocks." We didn't know it then, but the cache had been taken. We ended up turning a lot of rocks over, and despite our efforts to place them back the way they were, I'm sure we made our mark on the site.

It's sometimes hard to envision how others will impact a site when you know where the cache is because you hid it. If the site can't sustain traffic well, explicit instructions can help; perhaps they are better placed in the description than the hint. Responsible maintenance would involve regular monitoring and allowing "healing" time when needed, either by archiving the site periodically or varying the coordinates slightly.

It's ironic that success (i.e., popularity) of a sport can harm some of the things that make it attractive in the first place.
