  1. You can can upload waypoints and routes to your GPS with many 3rd party mapping software (including the Delorme products), as well as download tracks from the GPS to see where you were. However, Garmin and Magellan units both require their own software programs to upload detailed maps to the unit. I'm not certain about units from other manufacturers.

There are a few things that I am still in the shade about...

    1) I can use non OEM maps for up loading and down loading waypoints, tracks, and routes. Provided the software manufacturer supports the Merodian Platinum. I will need the Mapsend Topo or Streets to up load more detail for display on the unit. Is this correct?

Correct. You probably want one or the other, not both. Topo includes most of the street and address information, but Streets has more points of interest.

    2) These extra memory cards, are the like the ones used for digital cameras? If so I could get a usb reader to load this info onto the cards. What are the cards called? seems they would have to be smaller than my Compact Flach card for my digital camera. Aslo where can I go to see what these cards look like?

SD cards are a newer standard than compact flash; they are about the size of a postage stamp. Any computer/electronics place, such as Amazon or buy.com would have these as well as readers that you can pick up for $10-$30. I got a reader that could handle both the SD cards and the compact flash cards for my camera.

    3) Seems like the best deal I can find is at Harmony Computer's for $234 plus shipping of around $15 for econo shipping?

That's the best I could turn up. Actually, it was $239 when I bought in...the price keeps falling. I thought after my research was done that this was the best value for my price range. I like the unit a lot.

  3. I'm very impressed with the materials and features of the case. My plat is a snug but easy slide in (i.e., sufficient width in the case without extra space).

The depth is pretty good, too: I had tried carrying extra batteries in a small plastic case in one of the side mesh pockets. Since that was a hassle to slide in and out, I popped them into the bottom of the case. The plat sits on top but the top flap still closes properly. No bouncing with or without the extra batteries in the main compartment.

  4. FWIW, I distinctly remember someone posting here (around early autumn) that he/she had talked directly to Magellan and confirmed that the products did not have to be purchased at the same time or at the same place, just within the rebate period.

I tried looking for the post but I couldn't find it easily enough so I gave up (kinda like my cache searches icon_biggrin.gif)

  5. If logs have been made, they will be on the benchmark page (just like the cache pages). If you don't see any other logs, yours would be the first--at this stage of the game, you can get a *lot* of first finds!

  6. I'm with Mr. Rose (since you're asking for opinions icon_wink.gif). The best value I'm aware of now in GPSr and software is the Meridian Plat at Harmony Computers for $239 and MapSend Topo from Amazon for $70 with a $50 rebate for the two.

I'm not familiar enough with the Rino to know how that would compare...and if money is not a big factor, there might be other features to sway you. Be sure to read the current thread on "GPS units with Outstanding Reception" in this forum.

    Wyatt W,

That's what we're doing. I'm first trying to collect all the wishes before sending them off.

If it adds any weight to have more than just your signature, you could include my name on that letter (and probably a few others'--or maybe you could just submit in on behalf of the participants in this thread).

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but only the Magellan MapSend Streets *or* Topo are downloadable to the Meridians. You can download waypoints and routes from NG topos; you can upload tracks and stuff to NG, but you cannot download maps into the GPSr unless it is MapSend flavor.

  9. You'll find immediate relief with Geoclipping, available for free at this link. This automates the process of moving information from the cache page into Notepad or the Palm Desktop memo applet. It's a great timesaver.

Better yet is to get the Pocket Queries (for which you need the Mobipocket Reader). Does everything in one swell foop. You need to pony up charter membership, but it's money well spent. You can find out more on the page with information about charter membership.

I guess that sums it up. Thanks to all who shared what you're doing...it's got me on the right track now. I was confused because I had a few image editing apps *without* text annotation, so I wasn't sure if that was the right vein or not.

PhotoImpact costs $80, so I'll probably stick with my non-annotating ThumbsPlus for photo work. Word does set the standard for ease of use, but the 2 pasting steps(only slightly cumbersome) seem to degrade the already marginal resolution of my photos.

For right now, the Imaging applet in Windows seems to do the annotation trick with the only hassle of having to draw a filled box, and then drawing a text box within it. It's a little unwieldy to resize both boxes as needed, but it's free and it's there.

I'm open to other suggestions of whatever seems to work well.

  11. Here is one of the threads about the problem. I've not had a recurrence since I squeezed at the top of the display in the center of the unit.

If it's easy to exchange, that would be the safest thing to do. If it was a hassle, and you have a lot of warantee period left, I'd put the squeeze on and see how things go.

  12. I feel like I should know this...but I don't! What software are those of you who are annotating your photos using?

By annotation, I mean the insertion of captions into the photo in compliance with the NGS guidelines.

  13. Are you saying the type is a disk that is attached to the radio tower? In most situations the tower (spire, dome, what have you) is the benchmark itself. Even if there is an actual disk on a dome, around here if you can see the dome you can take the find without raising eyebrows.

I don't get what you're saying (I think I get your point about hypocrisy, although I don't believe I would agree with it)...how does what we do here interfere with what you were doing before? Or are you saying the hypocrisy issue takes the shine off the whole venture?
