  1. THe reader is not essential, but if you write to your SD card with any frequency it is a great convenience. It can take a long time to upload a map to your GPSr over the cable, especially if it is a larger map.

Each map file can contain up to four regions that you have defined. But if you want to have more than one map file on your SD card, then the reader becomes essential. If you try to upload a second map file over the cable, it will overwrite your first file.

  2. You can get ExpertGPS from the fine folk at Topografix. It costs money, but I consider it the best software purchase I ever made (and there is a 30 day trial period).

They also offer the freeware EasyGPS...I don't know the differences between the two, or whether EasyGPS can do what you want to do in this situation. SHould be easy enough to find out, though: give 'em a try!

  3. I started with a Garmin Venture, a less-full-featured model similar to the Vista. I upgraded to a MeriPlat mostly because I had difficulty holding a satellite lock with the Venture under foliage (the Vista also has the same patch antenna). The Meridian line, with the quadrifilar helix antenna, is generally regarded as superior in this aspect.

I suppose the other advantage of the Meridians is the expandable memory. The 24MB of the Vista would hold a lot of information, but Meridians can give you a lot more room.

The Vista would be a little smaller; the Meridians are a bit chunky. The software may shape your decisions as the detailed maps are both proprietary...people tend to complain about both, though.

My usual advice for a first-time purchase is to get a used basic model to learn with and to see which features are important to you. Then sell the used unit for only a little less than what you paid, and get the model that you've learned will make you happy. It's hard to know what you want and need until you've become familiar with the capacities of various offerings. Of course, if you are already reasonably sure of certain things (e.g., detailed maps, internal compass) then you may as well start at that level.

Lastly, I wouldn't agonize too much. Collect your information, make an informed decision...but you'll probably be happy either way you go.

Oh, by the way...I *really* like my MeriPlat icon_biggrin.gif

  4. What if you saved the track to the SD card at the point you wanted it to end, turned tracking off, and then reloaded the track from the card at the time you wanted to download the track to your computer?

Or would you even have to save it to the card if you just disabled tracking when you were finished tracking?

I'm getting older...it's easier for me to pose the question than to try it out icon_smile.gif

  5. I think we've covered this ground before, but I gets confused after short-term memory fades away.

Today I found the remnant of a disk in the location described. The disk had been removed;all that was left was the shaft that anchored it to the concrete bridge abutment. From the description and the appearance of the concrete, I felt confident of what I thought I saw. You can see photos at JV1828.

We seemed to have something like a consensus that here we would call this destroyed (yes?), but I'm confused about how the NGS would regard this. Is that shaft considered a part of the disk, in which case a report of destroyed would be appropriate? If it is not a part of the disk proper, than I would presume that "not found" is the call (with a description of the current scene).

  6. If there's a good photo up already, I often will defer on this. I usually upload a photo only if I'm first or I think my photo adds to what's already up there. As benchmark hunting is a young sport for us at this time, most finds are first finds.

I've taken the perspective (so far) that there wasn't much point in taking up the storage space with redundant photo postings. But as I'm posting this, I'm wondering if others here might view it as a means of verifying that one was actually there. What say the community?

  7. The Meridian FAQ at Yahoo group cautioned that off-brand SD cards may not be reliable. I think you're on safe ground with SanDisk or well-know brands. I sure wouldn't feel constrained to the Magellan cards. (I'm using SanDisk with no problems)

  8. I think there are some features that make the upgrade well worthwhile. But then, I am among(what seems to be) the majority who are not seeing accuracy issues popping up.

There is nothing in the directions that say the SD card should be removed. However, I've seen at least one post where someone thought that it made a difference. It won't hurt to take it out, and it's not much trouble to do so.

  9. Another thing to keep in mind would be the surrounding area...would searchers risk going on to private property nearby in their efforts to locate the cache?

Or (from another perspective) would searchers *feel* that they might inadvertantly straying where they might not be welcome in their efforts to locate the cache?

I don't know if it would apply to this place or not, but I've seen mention of cachers passing up on a cache placed in a private yard even though permission was secured to search in the yard. The weren't confident enough of *which* yard was the right yard.

  10. I didn't see too much ready information in my quick snoop around...(but I might have missed something). If you go to the home page and clickon the link about charter membership, there is a paragraph describing them and an opportunity to download a sample to view.

Beyond that you would be best off doing a search in the geocaching.com forum on "pocket queries" and reading some of the rather extensive discussions. Earlier posts will probably be more informative.

  11. Just read a post on the Yahoo group I thought I'd pass along...someone reported that Magellan tech support had told him that the 4.02 firmware was "premature" and 4.15 would be released soon to address the problems that have been mentioned.

Gee, I guess you guys weren't crazy after all icon_wink.gif

  12. If you can't get a good signal from the WAAS bird, it won't help (and can make things less accurate). When I had my Venture on a good WAAS signal it would get down to 6-7 foot accuracy. I couldn't get that signal in the woods or mountains, though, so I kept WAAS off...both to improve accuracy as best I could and to conserve batteries.

  13. The link that clps gave you should give you a better sense of what you need to do. I would not worry about getting a static charge wrist strap like they recommend, but when you take the cover off your machine be sure to touch the power supply to discharge your electrical charge. Do this before handling your memory chips if you can. The little critters are susceptible to static shocks, and if you and your computer are at the same level you decrease the risk of frying your new memory before you've even installed it.

All the rest will feel routine after you've done it once. Enjoy the self-rightous sense of fixing your problem by yourself icon_biggrin.gif

  14. You can upload fairly sizeable files (I think up to several MB) and the geocaching site will re-size it for you. Your upload will go faster, of course, if you have smaller files, so it may in some cases be still worthwhile to downsize. But unless you have honking big photo files, it's usually easiest to just upload whatever you've got and let the machines do our work for us.
