  1. Check this page to see when it should be shipping (and when the shipping date changes to a different date ) http://shop.garmin.com/cartography/mapsource/update/cd_update_details.asp?CD=011-00803-01

  5. http://www.gpsinformation.net/waas/g76/satellite.gif On the screenshot above, there is a small hollow circle on the large circular horizon (outermost) line between the N and E and right next to the number 26. I saw this circle on my GPSMAP 76S numerous times today. I've looked in the manual but I don't see any mention of what it is. I do remember this being brought up here in the forum but I have no idea when or what to even search the forum for. Can someone shed some light on what this thing is???

  7. That section of Garmin's website has not been updated to include the new GPSMAP 76S. Have you checked the actual GPSMAP 76S section of Garmin's website here? http://www.garmin.com/products/gpsmap76s/index.html Quoting the above web page: "The unit also contains a basemap of North and South America, including major highways, thoroughfares, rivers, lakes, and borders, with plenty of memory (24 MB) for downloading MapSource data."

Thus, I do not understand the advantage of having 16mb on-board memory versus 2mb. The difference of $70-100 does not seem worth it when I can get 32 to 64 mb sd memory for that amount. I am upgrading from a Magellan GP315. Input would be appreciated. The 2Mb vs. 16Mb of memory is not used for detail maps...it is only the amount of memory built into the unit for the basemap. All you will lose is basemap detail. The detail maps are loaded onto SD cards (SecureDigital cards). If you load 128Mb of detail maps onto an SD card and place this same card into both the Meridian and the Meridian Gold, that area of detail maps will be the same on both units. The only difference will be where the detail map does not cover and where the basemap shows instead. If you will be using large detail maps from MapSend, it's better to get the basic Meridian & use the money you save towards MapSend/an SD card/an SD card reader & writer. If you will not be using any detail maps, it may be better to go for the Meridian Gold with it's larger, more detailed basemap. Note that all Meridian units have NO built-in memory for detail maps...to use detail maps, you have to purchase an SD card to load the detail maps onto

  12. 1. You can assign one of the data fields on the map page to show a pointer arrow. When on an autoroute, the pointer will point to the next point in your route. When in a direct goto (off road goto), the pointer will point to the waypoint/POI/address etc that you are navigating to. You can't have both...that is, you can't navigate an autoroute and a off road goto and have two pointers pointing to two different points. 2. You have the option of having cardinal letters or numerical degrees displayed.
  13. The high-pitched whine is normal when using the backlight. This applies to Garmin units as well except for a few select models (that I know of)...my GPS V and GPSMAP 76S use a different type of backlighting (using the same type of LEDs used for backlighting on cell phones I believe) that makes no audible sound.
  14. I appreciate your review Dan and the time you took to write and post it here.

  16. I've uploaded the MAP 330M's "marine" basemap to my MAP 330 effectively making it a 330M and have done the same with my Meridian Gold which is now a Meridian Marine. It does work but as was mentioned, you have to have the physical RAM in the GPS to upload larger basemaps. I feel comfortable swapping basemaps but would not experiment with swapping the firmware code.

I had originaly purchased the MM2 (Mighty Mouse 2 extreme low power antenna) (http://www.tri-m.com/products/tri-m_systems/mm2.html) for my eMap about a year ago but I found that in my particular use, the MM2 really didn't help all that much since the eMap worked just fine with it's own antenna in my '94 Mustang GT. If you have a car with the newer coated metallic windshields or a boat with the GPS below deck, you would definitely want to get something like the MM2. If you're looking to *vastly* improve your currently good reception in-car, it will help but not as much as you may think. I haven't needed the MM2 for my GPS V or my GPSMAP 76S either. 23. Unless I'm missing something here, there is no such unit called the "M" Platinum. There are Marine, Gold and Platinum models. The difference between the Marine and the Gold models are the basemap...Marine's basemap contains Navaids in addition to all other POI's and data. The Platinum on the other hand is the same as the Gold model (same basemap) but also contains a built-in electronic compass and barometer/altimeter.
