  1. If you have both versions of City Select (City Select and City Select 4.01), which do you prefer to use in your GPS V? If you don't use either version of City Select, what other MapSource product do you use with your GPS V?
  2. http://www.garmin.com/products/gps5/download.html Changes Made From Versions 2.07 to 2.08: Corrected problem with the guidance setup selection for the "Off-Route Recalculation" prompt. Added GPS Accuracy to the list of configurable fields. Changed map legend font size. Improved error checking on the calculator page.
  3. It's fully possible to run MapSource from the hard drive alone without needing the CD in the drive. The easiest & safest way to do this is to copy the entire MapSource CD to the hard drive in it's own folder, then run the setup program from this folder (NOT setup from the CD). If you're good with dabbling in the Windows registry, the same can also be accomplished.
  4. I started off with Magellan... 1. GPS 315 2. MAP 330 w/MapSend Then tried the eMap with MapSource... 3. eMap #1 4. eMap #2 5. eTrex Vista Went back and tried Magellan... 6. Magellan Meridian Gold Saw a GPS V and fell in love... 7. GPS V 8. GPSMAP 76S The units I use the most are the GPS V, GPSMAP 76S and the Vista. The Magellans are good but I quite simply like the Garmins better.

  6. quote:Originally posted by Steve Bukosky:Well this is kind of off topic. I appreciated the need to increase download speed as I have a 64 meg card in my eMap. It takes about 2.5 hours to fill it up but I just do that before I go to bed. It is a pain if you need a change at the last minute though. My question is regarding the connection. Speed aside, I really want to connect via the USB connection rather than the serial port. I've lost two boards so far from hot connections. So the question is, can the cord be connected through a serial to USB adaptor and will the Mapsource and EasyGPS software work? Steve Bukosky N9BGH Waukesha Wisconsin Steve, A USB Serial adapter should work just fine for you using MapSource and EasyGPS (I know MapSource will for sure but I don't use EasyGPS so...) Have you thought about getting the Garmin USB Data Card Programmer for uploading MapSource maps to the data card? It sure beats the S L O W and sometimes unreliable serial port. Using the programmer, you can write a full 64mb data card in about 3-4 minutes. It may bit a bit expensive (about $80) but in my opinion, it paid for itself the first time I used it. It's a great time saver along with knowing that the data *will* be transferred to the card the first time and every time

  8. quote:Originally posted by fig:Ok, I am dying to know. What is "Added Jump Master skydiving accessory." Any ideas, and do we think this will be added to the V? Fig All I can figure out is that it's used for skydiving and there are quite a few options/settings along with some unknown acronyms like HAHO, HALO, PRP and DIP (sounds like some arcane television settings/features to me ). Since there are no instructions on how to use the thing, I'm not about to take up skydiving to find out/figure it out...and I doubt I will be trying to figure it out by jumping off my second-story roof. As far as adding it to the GPS V, I doubt it since I'm pretty sure it uses the barometric altimeter in some way (which the GPS V doesn't have)

  10. http://www.garmin.com/products/etrexVista/agree_beta.html Changes made from versions 2.28 to 2.29b BETA: Added battery type selector for improved battery reliability. Added page up and page down capability using zoom in and zoom out on most lists. Improved success rate for large map transfers. Improved display of certain points of interest with new City Navigator maps. Added Jump Master skydiving accessory. Improved accuracy of WAAS EPE. Improvements to the calculator's error handling capabilities. Improvements to map selection of city searches. General improvements to the Altimeter page. Improvements to the display airport runways on certain European maps. Restore defaults on map setup sets map to Land Mode. Improved translations for most languages. General improvements to fix various shutdowns.
  11. Are the interface contacts clean on the Summit? Also, make sure you have the Summit's Serial Data Format set to "Garmin"...go to Main Menu/Setup/Interface and verify that it is set to "Garmin" format.
  12. I've never experienced this but have you downloaded and installed the most recent version of MapSource? The current version is 4.09 and can be downloaded from http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/agree.html As far as seeing the map size, you can enlarge the leftmost display window by dragging the right edge of that window (or frame). You can also drag/resize the three top titles: Name Area and Size under the map tab to accomodate your particular display size. When your cursor is above the correct area to drag, it will turn into a <-|-> shape
  13. quote:Originally posted by Jolly B Good: The only problem I've ever encountered is that once it told me to turn left on a one way street against the flow of traffic. Later I asked the clerk at the hotel I was staying in about it and was told the city had only recently made the street a one way. You probably already know this but I thought I'd mention it for others that don't...MetroGuide does not contain the autorouting data that identifies one-way streets while CitySelect (both old and new versions) does. I'm assuming that's why it prompted you to turn the wrong way onto a one-way street.

  15. From the Main Menu screen, select Setup, select Heading and under the "Display" setting, select "Degrees" instead of "Cardinal Letters"
  16. SD=SecureDigital...CompactFlash is another form of flash memory. MMC=MultiMedia card, MemoryStick etc are all other types of flash memory. Basically, *all* these memory types use "flash" RAM with the actual package (the part that houses the flash RAM/PCB (printed circuit board) being the main difference). I'm pretty sure that JetSkier meant "Compact Flash" rather than just "flash". The memory product you posted about is indeed SD (SecureDigital) memory and will work with the Meridian Gold.
  17. I've managed to reproduce the problem. I tried setting the alarm clock to go off at approx 12:30pm PST today and it again did not function...no alarm, no alarm message. I tried it again after 1:00pm and it worked fine. Seems like there is a time frame in which the alarm clock doesn't work and I seem to have found the end of that time frame. As I'm writing this at 11:10pm, the alarm is indeed funtioning. Will try it again after midnight and see what happens.
  18. When I initially posted this message, I had been trying to get the alarm to funtion...this was before 1:00pm PST. I then tried the alarm again *after* 1:00pm PST and it now works. I'm scratching my head on this one. Thanks for the input folks!

  20. This is not that big of an issue but I'm just wondering if any GPS V owners using v2.07 have noticed that the alarm clock no longer works (the alarm never goes off even though the correct alarm time is set and the alarm is enabled). Is anyone's alarm clock feature *working* in v2.07? The alarm clock feature is accessed through MENU, MENU, SETUP, TIMERS.
  21. From any screen, press MENU twice, select SETUP and press ENTER, press MENU and select SOFTWARE VERSION.
  22. I have both the GPS V and the GPSMAP 76S and for my main use (driving), the V wins out over the 76S. You will be able to get more MapSource data into the 76S of course and the bigger screen may be a benefit to you. I do like the sensors in the 76S...and the elevation plot screen is very handy. I think for me though, the autorouting on the GPS V puts it on top...it's great to be able to enter an address/waypoint/POI and have the V guide you to your destination...even if you miss turns or take the scenic route 10 miles out the long way around, the V will still get you to where you're going. Both units are great....you have a difficult decision to make!

  24. I got my City Select 4.01 update CD today and purchased the full unlock code. In the Los Angeles area at least, I think this update is a step backwards... The same regions that once totalled 18.9MB to fit in my GPS V now use a whopping 32.5MB with routing data...even ditching the routing data only drops it down to 25.3MB. True, every supermarket, corner store and hole-in-the-wall pizza place is now listed but the total area uploadable to the GPS V is now reduced big time. If you have a GPS V and thought that you were short on memory with City Select, wait till you upgrade to 4.01. All these extraneous little markets, pizza joints and POI's should have been filterable in some way. Just a bit of warning for those who have not yet upgraded. This update may be better in some ways but "better" also comes with a price. In this case, it's $50 (or $100) with less useable/uploadable area than ever before. Use the online MapSource viewer to see if you really NEED all this new and "useful" data. For some reason, I think the original City Select map data will continue to reside in my GPS V.
  25. I also live in So Cal and find the memory to be a bit tight. I live within about 100 ft of the border of two regions (Los Angeles, CA and Ontario, CA) and it's a bit tricky getting my needed regions loaded in for auto-routing. On longer future trips, I may bring along my notebook and swap regions during a rest stop. So far though, it's been tight but doable without the notebook.
