  1. New GPS V beta v2.11 available at Garmin
  2. quote:Originally posted by L.O.S.T. Mutant_KJ:I just ordered a barebones E-Map off the web without really knowing what it comes with(it's a long story). There was no mention of a memory cartridge. Does this mean that it doesn't come with one or does it mean that it comes with an 8 MB cartridge? The ad did say that it came with a US Street Map database; I don't suppose this would happen without some memory cartridge, right? Also, there was no mention of a PC Interface. While I can't imagine a mapping GPS wouldn't come with an interface to the PC, I suppose this means I'll have to buy this extra, right? I believe there are two eMap packages sold. One is the eMap basic which includes the eMap, a wrist strap and user's guide. The other is the eMap Deluxe which includes the eMap, MapSource Metroguide CDROM (this allows you to upload *detailed* maps to the eMap among doing other things like waypoint/track/route management), wrist strap, user's guide, PC interface cable and a blank 8MB data card to which the detailed user maps from MetroGuide are uploaded to. Regardless of what eMap package you get, the eMap comes pre-loaded with a US basemap (not on the data card) which is useable for awhile until you want more detail in the areas you will be using the most. The eMap has a built-in PC interface but in the basic package, it does you no good since the PC interface cable is not included...you need the cable to transfer the detailed map data to the data card unless you opt for the USB data card reader which costs about $60-$70. The cable comes in the Deluxe package. You should check out the Garmin eMap webpage and all the accessories available for it.
  3. ...is up at the Garmin "What's New" page. I almost missed it myself.
  4. quote:Originally posted by CCrew:Get yours straightened out? Like to know before I "take the plunge" with updating mine. I installed this beta when it was first released on Friday and I havn't seen any abnormalities. As long as you let the unit sit for awhile to rebuild the almanac like the instructions say, you shouldn't see any problems. Just be sure and save your waypoints/tracks/routes (they WILL be erased) and be prepared to reset all of your user settings.
  5. I have a Vista, a Meridian Gold (which is basically the same as the Platinum but without the compass/barometer) and the GPS V. My unit of choice is hands down the GPS V because it's the best all-around unit. It's 19MB of map memory is somewhat limited, especially with the new version of City Select which includes a TON of pointless (to some people) POI's (points of interest) which eat up even more the already limited 19MB. In the Los Angeles area, this is even more pronounced. Despite this drawback, I'd still choose it and recommend it as an awesome first GPSR. (Yes, I do still love my Vista. )
  6. *Note that both of these updates will delete your waypoints/tracks and reset the unit (the unit will re-initialize itself and go through the "searching for satellites" procedure) so be sure to save your waypoints/tracks first. User uploaded maps should remain untouched. Here's the LINK [This message was edited by SergZak on January 10, 2003 at 11:13 AM.]
  7. Just an FYI that Garmin has posted sneak peaks of three new products HERE There is also a new version 4.11 of MapSource linked at the same page.
  8. The "Lock to Roads" function on Garmin units do not work with Roads and Recreation and US Topo MapSource products. MetroGuide USA and City Select/City Navigator are the only MapSource products that I know of that support "Lock to Roads".
  9. quote:Originally posted by Idaho Ron:I took a trip with a friend in his mini van and when I looked at the max speed after the trip it read 193mh. Anyone got a Idea how this happened? Ron You apparently lost satellite lock for a brief period of time. When the the unit regained satellite lock, it "jumped" to a new position. The speed at which the unit jumped from the last locked position to the new position is recorded as your maximum speed.

  11. Check to make sure that the communication mode is set to GARMIN...from the main menu screen, select 'setup', then select 'interface' and set it to GARMIN if it's not already.
  12. quote:Originally posted by Team Acer: I looked on the V for the setting Land Detail.... Could not find it.... Can someone point the way? Thanks, Team Acer From the map page, press MENU, highlight & select Setup Map, then use the rocker left/right to highlight the tabs...the Land Data setting is under the DISPLAY tab. Many other settings are under different tabs...go digging around for the settings you're looking for.
  13. quote:Originally posted by Jolly B Good:It seems like most Garmin users follow this trend. They start out with an Etrex yellow and soon have their eye on the higher end models. Well, I for one started off with Magellan (GPS 315, then a MAP 330) and was a die-hard Magellan fan until I tried a Garmin eMap and have been a Garminite ever since. Even though I bought (and still own) a Magellan Meridian Gold, I thought it was way too much like the MAP 330 (but much more expandable memory-wise). One of my least favorite aspects of the Magellans is MapSend which seems much more crude than Garmin's MapSource which (to me at least) seems much more refined and polished...again, this is personal preference and I'm sure there are others out there that have tried both products and feel differently. Just use what is best for your particular need and taste and enjoy your GPSR's.
  14. quote:Originally posted by yooper_gps:I nearly put up a post with very question today. Now that I have a Garmin 76S I'm wondering if I should have checked out the Plat. Doug I have both the GPSMAP 76S and the Meridian Gold...(I know that the Platinum has the additional compass and barometer). The main advantage of the Meridian line over GPSMAP 76S (and other Garmin units) is it's use of industry standard SD cards to store map data/waypoint data/track data. Even though my Meridian Gold has this advantage, I seldom (if ever) use it. My main units in order of usage are GPS V, GPSMAP 76S, and Vista in spite of their limited & non-expandable memory for map data. One thing that I find a bit of a turn-off on the Meridian line is the low resolution screen compared to other units availible at the same time...there should have been some substantial increase in screen resolution over the MAP 330. But again, that's only my view of it. Both units have their advantages/disadvantages but I guess I'm just a Garmin guy (even though I started off using Magellan products)
  15. I own quite a few GPSR's and the GPS V is the one that goes with me everywhere.
  16. quote:Originally posted by justincredible76:Do you have to have an SD card? Is there not enough space on the GPS for a map? thx Yes, you *need* an SD card to use MapSend *user uploadable maps*. The only RAM on the Meridian line is dedicated to the basemap (the default internal map you see that comes pre-loaded on the unit) and the operating system firmware. If you get an SD card, make sure and purchase an SD card reader/writer also...they are cheap and will speed up transferring the maps from the PC to the SD card by a *very wide* margin.
  17. quote:Originally posted by Anders: So why should anyone want to clear it at all? Anders For privacy issues...maybe you went somewhere/looked for something that you don't want to be advertised to someone that has no business in knowing. Now where was that gentleman's club called the Peppermint Rhino again???
  18. quote:Originally posted by bckane:Garmin GPS V Under "Find", I have saved items in categories, "POI", "Addr & Intrsct", "Other", which fall under "Recently Found Places". Does anyone know how to delete these? I've checked the manual and all the sub menus I can think of. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Brian There's no way to delete these other than doing a master reset which will delete all waypoints/settings etc. I don't remember off-hand what the key sequence is for doing a master reset...anyone??
  19. quote:Originally posted by Mr. Rose:I have heard that you can actually make Map Source, by choosing a start and end on the map, it can auto generate you a route to follow choosing the best route on the roads possible. Can anyone attest to this or Say what you need to get this to work? Thanks Yes, you can have MapSource auto-generate routes that you can then upload to your GPS. Note that this only works using MetroGuide, City Select or City Navigator. Roads & Recreation and Topo(among others) do *not* support this and will simply generate a straight-line route from the starting point to the destination.
  20. quote:Originally posted by MAK:Holy Cow! It looks like Frys Electronics/Outpost.com has the merigreen for an incredible price of $99. That price doesn't include the ~$100 lanyard/wrist strap.
  21. quote:Originally posted by Centaur:I own a GPSV which came with Mapsource CitySelect 4.01 maps. Anyone know if the cityselect maps will download to a GPSMAP 76S? I know the routing data will be lost as I dont believe the 76S routes, but will the maps and addresses work? ROCKY is wrong. City Select maps will indeed work on *ANY* Garmin GPS that will accept downloadable maps, provided there is sufficient memory to hold the map(s) and that the map is unlocked using the serial number of the unit that you want to use it with. The unlocked maps are tied to the specific GPSR's serial number which you used when you unlocked it. With City Select, you get an "extra" unlock code to use the maps with a different GPSR if you so desire.
  22. quote:Originally posted by Alan2:How do you? (I cannot find yards in the list. "Added yards label on trip computer page in big numbers mode." Alan Do you have yards enabled?...from the SETUP menu, select UNITS, then under DISTANCE/SPEED, select yards...didn't make YARDS show up in big numbers mode on the TRIP COMPUTER page for me though. WORKS AS ADVERTISED... After your trip odometer goes over 99.9 ft, the readout will switch to yards. [This message was edited by SergZak on November 26, 2002 at 06:03 PM.]
  23. quote:Originally posted by targetdrone:I must have an older version, as I never had to register or input any #'s. The serial number/unlock code is only applicable to City Select & City Navigator maps. It does not apply when using MetroGuide USA, Topo, Roads & Recreation, etc.
  24. ...pick it up here This beta re-enables the "include route calculation data from maps" check box under the "Transfer" tab (even though it is not listed in the bug fix list in the readme.txt file). This issue was discussed in this thread. Glad to see that Garmin really listens to user feedback.
  25. But also realize that it's on it's last legs...it's been around for a couple of years now and I'm sure Garmin has something coming soon to replace it. That said, I still prefer my eMap over my Meridian Gold...I'd go on more about these two units but I'm a bit short on time at the moment. Maybe more later on...
