  1. I'll leave the application question to others, but I will say I'd recommend finding some BEFORE you place your first one. You're going to learn a lot about the type of caches you like, what things you like or don't like about the placement, hides, containers, items in the cache, etc. Also, it's best to learn if it's something you feel you'll stick with before placing your first one. Remember, placing a cache is an ongoing responsibility.
  2. Even the simplest form of site analysis would show the problem, and the fix is simple. Not sure I see the issue.
  3. From the front page of the site: "There are 1,429,634 active geocaches and over 5 million geocachers worldwide."
  4. Negligence "is a failure to exercise the care that a reasonably prudent person would exercise in like circumstances." They published a dangerous cache with large obvious warnings about the danger of getting it. Therefore, no negligence. If they published that cache, knowing full well the danger, but knowingly approved it without any warnings, that would be negligent.
  5. Got a GC code for that one? To sue, you would have to show negligence. So if I cache was placed in the middle of a busy highway, and GS had ample information and opportunity to understand the danger, and approved it anyway, then you may be able to prove negligence. Whether or not they approve/deny caches based on danger doesn't really make a difference.
  6. I like the idea of really sealing the wooden box, may look into trying that.
  7. Agreed. I think plastic is most often used for practicality. While glass and wood may be more interesting, they have rather severe drawbacks for caching.
  8. I suspect for a new cacher like myself, it's a combination of what you heard about first (geocaching), combined with the actual treasure hunt itself. Great places to see existed before I knew about geocaching, and I got out to see a few of them. But geocaching adds the extra incentive of finding an actual hidden object.
  9. Agreed, I think anything that requires digging is out.
  10. I'm still fairly new, but so far haven't found anything I wanted to keep. I do try to drop decent things in caches though!
  11. Well, I'd first recommend finding more before you place them, one of the best pieces of advice I received. Did you take readings at the site(s) with multiple devices? Were you using a GPS device or smartphone? What was the accuracy range when you took the raedings?
  12. Of course Groundspeak is not the government so they do not have to worry about either Amendment. And since it is their web site and game, they can have whatever policy they want. So one of the initial suggestions is as far as we need to go: if a person thinks there might be a problem, contact Groundspeak and let them make the decision. Never said anything about GS did I? Nope! Being able to quote to change context is convenient, aint it. Of course, you were referencing a topic relating to a name on the Groundspeak forum. So assuming you aren't popping in threads and making random statements ("Hey guys, I like ice cream!"), I'd say it's perfectly reasonable to assume you were referencing the GS forum.
  13. I agree with this. One thing I tell people about geocaching is how family-friendly it is. So while I doubt the name would offend me personally, if it's risque, I'd object to it on the site on that basis.
  14. I've found if you're patient and read carefully, you can get some very nice items on eBay, running $2 or less.
  15. I think that's great. Not really for me, because most of the fun for me is getting to a cache, seeing someplace new, and in seeing the interesting cache hide/container/contents. So mass caches like that wouldn't really be interesting unless they all had some unique value or placement. But we all like different things, so people that like the big numbers, rapid finds, it's very cool the state is doing it!
  16. Yes maladeta. The three finds are false, read them "not found, we threw a susbstitution, find" Not false to me, seems more of a case of, "this cache hasn't been found in 4 years, the CO is not active, and it has been searched for many times without being found, for this reason I decided to replace the cache out the kindness of my heart for the CO, and of course I will sign my name." However, given the fact the original cache has now been found, seems a legitimate FTF, and a great one! Congrats!
  17. Apparently the only possible exception is for those with family there. Otherwise, if you're caught, you're prosecuted.
  18. I'm still relatively new, but the cachers I've met have been very nice people, and very welcoming. As mentioned above, any sufficiently large group of people will have jerks, but for the most part, the community seems to be a positive one. As for numbers, I have a collector mentality, so I like to see that number go up. But I don't see it as competitive, I don't compare that number to anyone.
  19. Congrats! Going to hide my first two hopefully this weekend, hope it goes as well. :-)
  20. I can't quote any rules regarding it, but I know theres several in Las Vegas like that.
  21. I started caching fairly recently, and at the time, didn't know that "TFTC" was considered poor logging. I've learned, and do better logs now. However, the concept that only new cachers do this was debunked in another thread, where examples of TFTC and other very brief logs were shown going back many years. Smart phones certainly contribute to it, as does simple education. For a new cacher, there's nothing obvious out there to show what good logging is, unfortunately.
  22. I believe that would make me angry enough to get some friends and set up a 24x7 watch on the cache.
  23. Not having placed any here (yet), please take these comments as just simple opinions. For size, guidelines says a large is about a 5 gallon bucket, or 20 liters. The difficulty of terrain may be your insolvable issue, if you only have 5 acres to work in, unless you have some extreme terrain there.
  24. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the quote above from your message an opinion on blank logs? You can't really expect to offer yours, while telling others they can't offer theirs.
