Can somebody please tell me how to reply to one of these posts?  That's how old and computer illiterate I am.  But I need help.

Surely with over 1700 posts to the Forum you know how to reply.  I looked at your previous posts in this thread and I'm not clear on what exactly your question is.  You ask for step by step but for what exactly?  Have you looked in the How Do I... or Geocaching Topics sections of the Forum for answers to your questions?  There are a number of recent threads on how to load caches using the GPX File button, load Lists using Send to Garmin, load PQs, and load caches on old Garmins that don't read .gpx files.  If those aren't clear, post your questions there and someone is sure to respond.  If you can't find an existing thread regarding a specific issue just start a new thread.  And it will help tremendously if you say what operating system, browser, and GPS model you are using.

I think the CHS and the text of the "friendly" reminder that it triggers is only part of the problem. Other changes (whether initiated by Groundspeak or by the community) have also created an environment where challenging caches are discouraged. The CHS and its "friendly" reminder is just part of that overall environment.

What? Groundspeak creating an environment where challenging caches are discouraged?  We're all supposed to be Adrenalin junkies, don't ya know?  Get out there and find yourself six of those extremely challenging 1/1 caches so you can be an official AJ!!

  3. No need for Basecamp to remove caches from the GPS. The way to remove the list of caches from your GPS is to connect it to your computer and use file manager to locate the file in the unit's GPX folder and delete the file.  You also can to do this to remove caches that have been loaded individually to the GPS.  Deleting a list on your dashboard will not also delete the list on the GPS.

I almost exclusively use the Send to Garmin method to load my GPS because the caches I like to target generally don't fit well with PQs.  What I have done is created a list I call "GPS Transfers".  I add new caches to the list and delete caches that I have found or may no longer have an interest in from the list.  I do this on an on-going basis.  Each time I transfer the list, it overwrites the list on the GPS so I don't have to individually add or delete caches on my GPS.  Each individual list you have on your dashboard that is transferred to the GPS will be a unique file in the GPS so transferring a list called My Favorites will only overwrite the My Favorites list on the GPS and not any other lists you have transferred.

Now if I was the type of cacher that wanted something like "give me all the caches within 5 miles of point X" I'd definitely use PQs to load the GPS rather than the list approach.  If the caches you like to target fit well with the filtering parameters of PQs, learn how to load PQs on the unit.

  4. Cool!  Now that it seems you've figured out how to move one cache at a time to your GPS, you can now move on to loading entire lists.  If you haven't already done so, load Garmin Express on your computer and follow the instructions to add your device(s).  Once GEx is loaded, and with your GPS connected, go to your dashboard and click on "Your Lists" on the lower left side.  That should bring up a listing of your lists.  To the right of the list you wish to copy to the GPS you will see a circle with three dots in it.  Click that and then click Send to Garmin.  It will likely ask you if you want to open GEx, click yes and it should open if it wasn't open already and then give you dialog box that says Content is Ready for Download.  Click Continue and it will show a status bar for the transfer which after a few seconds should show Complete.  You can then use file manager to look in the GPX folder of the GPS and see the newly transferred list file (one .gpx file for the whole list).  Unplug the GPS and power it up.  The caches from the list should be there.

  5. If you didn't get the PQ results you were expecting you may need to recheck the parameters you set.  Make sure you clicked or unclicked the correct radio buttons, entered the correct search radius, etc.. Another way to load multiple caches at one time is to copy an entire list you've created utilizing the Send to Garmin feature on your lists page.  Or you can load caches one at a time using the GPX File button on the cache page.  Save those to the same GPX folder on your GPS unit as you did with the PQ files.

I have Internet Explorer 11 I have done updates regularly on my GPS Map 64ST

when I hit "download GPX" my only option is to open, save, or save as. If I hit save or save as it just puts it as a single file in my downloads. Then I have to go to each one to put the GPX file on my Garmin. So I end up with a whole bunch of single files to add. If I try to add it to a list it shows that it was saved but I have no idea where it is. If I go into my dashboard they are not there and if I made a new list when  at the save to list spot that list does not show up in my dashboard.  When I download the GPX file I have no option to save it to my GPS right then.

What am I missing??? I am not tech savvy.

So with the Garmin connected to your computer, when you choose Save As, doesn't it allow you to change the target location to the GPX folder on the GPS?

Plug the GPS into the Mac and it should mount as a drive, maybe two drives. My Etrex mounts one drive, my Montana mounts a one drive for the GPS and one for the SD card. If a drive doesn't mount unplug the GPS and go into system settings. The interface selected should be USB mode, or Garmin spanner depending on GPS model. Once the GPS mounts as a drive open it and you will see two folders, Documents and Garmin. Open the Garmin folder and drag the GPX files to the GPX folder. You will have to unzip the PQ before moving the GPX files into the GPX folder.

Also be aware that when you unzip the PQ you will likely get two files, one will be the cache files and the other will be additional waypoints associated with the caches in the PQ.  Move both to the GPX folder.

I have a Garmin GPSMap64ST How do I save the GPX file into the Garmin folder? I don't get an option to send it to my GPS at all. The "send to GPS" was all I have ever done I know no other way. I am not total tech savvy. Thanks

When you connect your 64ST to the computer you should see it in file manager as a storage drive like a thumb drive would appear.  To load one cache at a time, similar to how the no longer available "Send to GPS button" was used, on the page for the cache you want to load click on the GPX File button.  Then click on Save As and save the file into the Garmin/GPX folder on the GPS.  This is the same folder where the old button sent the cache.  Disconnect and turn on the GPS.  You should see the cache in the cache list.

As a Premium Member you also have the option to load an entire list using the Send To Garmin option on your lists page.  And you can create pocket queries and save them into the same Garmin/GPX folder.

Note: I think this should work with any Garmin unit that utilizes a USB cable and supports GPX files.

We went after one cache today, relatively low D/T (1.5/2.0) and a very short hike (0.2 mi).  The signage at the entrance to the park was enough to get my adrenaline going though!

I wonder if it's different in other browsers. It also seems like something that could be fixed in a future Garmin Express update.

    Thanks kunarion!

I was assuming the false message I was getting was a Garmin Express or Groundspeak issue and hadn't considered it might be a browser issue.  I have been using Chrome as my primary browser so I tried transferring lists using Internet Explorer and Edge.  They both worked flawlessly, no "Garmin Express not detected" pop-up.

So I looked at my Chrome settings.  I was running version 68.0.xxxx.xx and there was an update available so I ran it.  Now it's 69.0.xxxx.xx.  Tried a List transfer and no more annoying error pop-up.  Yay!!!  :D

  12. Not having the problem.  PC, Windows 10, Garmin Express 6.8.1.0.  Just transferred a List to my 600 and it worked as it should.

Edit to add:  I do not get the syncing failure message you describe but I do get a different failure message.  For quite some time, whenever I connect my GPS (I have a 450T and a 600) and click "Send to Garmin" to transfer a list, I get a pop-up message that says GarminExpress cannot be detected.  This happens whether GE is already open or not.  It's a false message because GE connects to the device and gives me the box to download the list.  I just close out the pop-up and complete the transfer without issue.

"Going forward, GPSr users can put geocaches on their devices by clicking ‘Download GPX’ on the Geocaching map, or by clicking the ‘GPX file’ button on the cache page. Then, transfer the downloaded file to a GPS device."

I was planning to go out tomorrow to find over 60 caches. I tried to download them to my Garmin etrex GPS only to find "Download to GPS" has been changed to "Download to GPX". I am probably doing something wrong, but can't now get any caches to download to my device. I click on the Download GPX option and it asks if I want to open or save the file. I have tried both of these options, but none give me the option to transfer the downloaded file to my GPS device that is plugged into the computer. It used to be simple and quick to download caches with the "Download to GPS". Can anyone advise me how to resolve this please? (PS: I do not have a smart phone so cannot continue caching atm!)

With the unit connected to the computer click the save as and put the file into the Garmin/GPX folder on your handheld.

I first open Garmin Express.  So it's running already.  It opens an extra window or two that only happens when first run (at least, the first time it's run since the last Windows reboot).  So I'm guessing that the first time you click "Send To Garmin", Garmin Express takes a little longer to start than the web site expects, causing the error.  Maybe.

I'll stick to Pocket Queries (such as Pocket Queries made from Lists) and loading the files manually. It's sure fun to play with Garmin Express, but I don't enjoy the drama of software that doesn't work as much as everyone else does. B)

I should have mentioned it happens whether or not I already have GE open.  Not a huge deal, just irksome to get a message that says something is not working when it actually is.

I also should note that unlike when v6.6.0.0 was released, I did get a message this time that a new version of GE was available.  The only times I've had a problem with GE/List transfers were when HQ had an issue on their side several months ago and when 6.6.0.0 was released without apparent notice.  Otherwise it's been a reliable and valued tool for me.

  15. There is now a newer version of Garmin Express, v6.7.2.0.  I just did the update from v6.6.0.  I then tested the new version and the list transferred successfully.

Side note - I don't know if this happens to everyone but when I click "Send to Garmin" the first thing I get is a pop-up that says Garmin Express is not detected.  I just close it using the "X".  This isn't unique to the new version, it also did it with 6.6.  Even though I get that pop-up GE does open, gives me the download now option, and successfully executes the transfer.

  16. As a basic member you can only load caches one at a time.  Go to the cache page and find the "GPX File" button.  With your GPS connected to your computer, click the button and it will download the cache.  It needs to go into the Garmin/GPX folder.  So download it 1) directly to that folder or 2) to your computer and then copy(or cut)/paste it to the Garmin.

  17. Use this format - N69 16.453 E018 42.593  do not use the degree, minute, and seconds symbols.  This is the DDD MM.MMM format.  There no seconds in this format, only minutes to 3 decimal places.

Also, I don't know what map you are usung but you may need to use a comma after the north coordinate.

  18. I got a new Samsung S8+ to replace my S6.  Today I transferred apps through the cloud (Verizon) but WhereYouGo didn't show up on the new phone.  I went to download it from Play Store but I can't find it there either.  Is WhereYouGo no longer available for download?  I finally succeeded in transferring the app by using Smart Switch but haven't had a chance to test it.

I have no idea who mondou2 is, but I assume they're the #2 behind alamogul in the number of find logs* based on the context of the post here.

Like NanCycle, I take a lot of these high numbers with a grain of salt a mile wide. I long ago lost count of the number of times I've seen a high-number cacher throw-down or otherwise do something that's generally regarded as unethical, thus providing an explanation of how they got those high numbers. It may be that I'm unjustly extrapolating the behaviour of a few onto the many, but after you've seen enough evidence, a pattern starts to emerge and it becomes increasingly likely that the extrapolation is accurate and justified and that there are few that are actually "clean".

Feel free to poke holes in my theory and otherwise defend those with high numbers, but it's unlikely to change my views due to the preponderance of evidence available.

*Note that I was careful not to say "finds"

You paint with a pretty broad brush.  Mondou2 lives in the same state as I and to my knowledge his reputation is that of an avid, ethical cacher who is able to travel a lot to pursue his caching desires.

  20. At an event earlier this year I was talking with Mondou2 and he said it will be hard to pass Alamogul because they often cache together.  So I'd put the money on Alamogul reaching 200k first.  Definitely not my style of caching but they obviously enjoy it greatly.  And though it was somewhat brief, I really enjoyed chatting with him.

  21. I'll preface this by saying I have not used an Etrex20 so I'm not familiar with any functional differences from the Oregons that I have.

Here are some suggestions.  First, make sure you are using version 6.6 of Garmin Express.  This is a recent release and Lists will no longer transfer when using older versions.  After doing a transfer look in the 20's Garmin/GPX folder.  The file should be there if it was successful.  If you can't get the List transfers to work you can load caches one at a time or with pocket queries for multiple caches.  For a one-at-a-time transfer, go to each cache page and click the GPX File button.  With the 20 connected to your computer, download the file directly to the Garmin/GPX folder on the unit or download it to your PC and then copy/paste or click and drag the file to the GPX folder.  For pocket queries, run the query and when you receive the results via email download it to your computer and unzip it.  You should get two files, one with the caches and one with associated waypoints.  Use the above procedure to move the two files to the GPX folder on the unit.  I hope this helps.
