  1. I don't think the user accessible files on the etrex are the same as the firmware - I backed up mine (etrex 30) the minute I opened it. I then updated to 2.6, and 2.61 firmware. Later I had a corrupt GPX and the device "broke". Eventually I found how to force it into usb mode and wiped the device, and copied the original backup back on, the device still showed 2.61 firmware version, so I hadn't overwritten that. Undoubtedly worth a try though. I hear very, very good things about garmin support, but if it's just a couple of days old I'd go back to the retailer and deny all knowledge of anything but "it didn't work out of the box"
  2. That app is slightly out of my price range, as it would involve buying an iphone Fizzycalc seems a good option, 2 waypoints and calculate the difference
  3. Thank you. Now I need to find somewhere to stash a cache - or just get a mag-nano
  4. I use windows built in Snipping Tool to "cut out" the area of screen I want, then either edit in cache names (paint/photoshop etc..) or just print
  5. grrrr.....I hate RTFM ...and it doesn't really answer my question, "sight n go" is, I think, close to what I want to do...but I won't be able to see the final location I suppose I mark as a waypoint the final location then goto start location and navigate to the new waypoint, which should give me the distance and bearing?
  6. A combination of things can be helpful If your app uses stored maps, and cache data, then turn off all wireless, airplane mode is an easy way to do this Using a bluetooth GPS unit (about £10) saves a big chunk 'o power Spare batteries, with a socket charger are cheap enough on ebay, I always carried 2 spares for my HTC, never used more than one. Then....buy a handheld GPS, you'll not worry about dropping it in a stream 'cos it'll be waterproof. You'll be able to cache in rainstorms, and your battery should last around 24 hours, with a pair of AA in your pocket that's a whole weekend caching without sleep!
  7. Advertising? I use adblock plus so didn't even know there were any (actually I assumed, as I am paying to access the site there wouldn't be any!)
  8. We only have a handful of caches out ourselves, finding "the right place" for one being one of our reasons for so few... One of the things we enjoy about caching is the places it's taken us to, and, locally, there's somewhere I'd like to share with others It's an old building frontage preserved inside a "new" bank. As it's very much private property (with public access), and belonging to a bank, I don't want to hide anything nearby, so I was thinking I could set a simple puzzle which relied upon actually visiting the site, either "how many...=A" type thing or, have a waypoint marked nearby with an instruction to visit the facade, then "project a waypoint x feet at a bearing of A" which is my preferred way...only how do I do it using my etrex 30? We've only ever followed it to a point, never the other way round.
  9. I use GSAK with the GenUploadStats macro to generate the data, and then upload it to my profile for anyone who cares to see (I guess just me ) Fully editable, so far more data available than showing on my profile - Having not caches abroad at all I decided not to show empty maps of the world )
  10. Some logs are harder to write than others, a great adventure can lead to me hitting the log length limit, while part #27 or a series which is almost identical to #26 and #25 takes a little more effort, but I still try. We've recently published our first caches and it's great to get the email someone has found one, and read in their log that they had a great time and appreciate the cache. Those few how have just left a couple of words are a bit of a disappointment, and make me regret, even more, my first, short logs (I really have thought about going back and rewriting some!)
  11. followthearrow have a guide to the features of most GPS units, and information about what they mean Slightly over your budget, but we bought the Etrex 30 as it seemed to have every function we could want except camera (we have a camera) and touchscreen (figured it would be fiddly with gloves on) so far we're happy with the decision
  12. I thought the limit was 1000/PQ? The ability to download all withing perhaps 20 miles of home would be great
  13. Sorry I'm a couple of days late with this. Some great pictures, and nice to see that people do actually make the effort to catalogue traveler's journeys Pretty hard to chose, The story dodgydaved shared is great, Mrs B's eyore is a funky traveller, but it came dow to, for me, Simplypaul and his Austin healey (because an uncle of mine had one) and cachabit's sweatpea, and cachabit just takes the prize as I guess it about sums up caching. So..over to you Winner!
  14. I've never heard of it. Groundspeak have their own (paid) appp, but other popular ones include c:geo (free) and neongeo (paid). unless you're a premium member most apps have pretty severe limitations, c:geo was the one we started with, then once we went PM bought neongeo, then a handheld GPS
  15. I've used mine with 2.70 to both place and find caches, in "difficult" terrain and it appears to be working fine now
  16. you could always "pop" over toward york for the mega series ii, 100 caches, 21 miles, with a village (and pub) in the middle? Mrs F thinks she and I should do that soon....21 miles does worry me a little
  17. your 20 should take all the data generated by 1.0.1
  18. I'd suggest NM would alert the cache owner, who could then decide whether to relocate (with a new container) or archive it themself
  19. oh, that's strange - 2.61 was the beta software, 2.70 is the latest
  20. I haven't - but I do use neongeo and think it's excellent. Our "primary" GPS is a handheld etrex 30, but the android app is great for caching on the fly, and displaying maps etc.
  21. I suppose I ought to put one up of our own, though nowhere near the standard of those above it. This little lion wanted picturing with other lions, well, our kitten was as close as I was getting to a lion!
  22. ocean, I'm not sure anyone was happy about the change, and it definitely have been handled better by Groundspeak, but do a bit of searching, there are greasemonkey scripts around to make them better than before
  23. A month ago GS were paying google $0/month for mapping, that's now been reduced to $0/year to google. I suspect you are entitled to your fair share of that saving
