If using a concrete stain, could I suggest you splash it on when wet? Much more natural. And I do mean splash. Just wet the brush and slap or swipe the brush across it. I love your idea. Make sure you place it where it can't roll down hill. Nothing worse then someone getting crushed by your homemade boulder.

Posting a note instead of a DNF
A & J Tooling replied to PalmettoBuckeye's topic in General geocaching topics
It'd be neat that if the CO went to their cache and verified that all was good, all the notes were instantly turned into DNF's. Would shut up a lot of the people that assume they know it all. -

Has anyone ever hid a cache in water?
A & J Tooling replied to guitar slim's topic in General geocaching topics
I know I can screw in an auger and chain with a bouy on it for hooking a boat to when it is anchored off shore, maybe attach a container to it? I'll check... nope, it states, at least in Michigan, you can not place one underwater. Oh fudge! -

Maybe they just haven't got around to posting it online yet. Maybe they'll do one of those evil cut and paste thingies and say they hit a bunch while out on vacation or some such? Hope no evil do'er takes out their swiss army knife and cuts off the ftf part and walks away with it...

I'll post pictures when I finish 'em but I have some nice machinery that makes pretty coins out of corian and wood. It'll do anything but these are the cheapest to make. My avatar and my title and maybe a geocache logo on the back. They'll start appearing in caches in a couple of months when I get to 100.

Ridiculous. I did the cache in January. It's a hide near a telephone pole on the side of the road near a barbed-wire fence. Nowhere near any windmills. Nowhere near anything else I can think of. I don't recall it being on a structure that would require permission. The lady is nuts. I'm sorry, if you look to the west about a mile you'll see what I do believe are a couple rows of wind turbines. That power has to go somewhere. The electrical grid is considered vital infrastructure and it actually has a componant of Homeland Security assigned to it. I notice quite a few transformer substations in the area too. One very close to your hide. I asked if it was on the power transmission pole. If it ain't, disregard but if it is in the vicinity of a power transmission zome, it'll get closer scrutiny by people who'd you'd rather not have to deal with (not threatening but rather red tape). All it would take is a phone call from said lady. You do realize if it came to that, either a paper pusher having to get approval or just making the area off limits to geocaching, which will win, right? It might not be right but some times you have to back down and give in for the overall good.

Yeah, it takes like 24 hours to show up or 48, I forget, so I'm like you and just switch to the old maps.

Geocaching.com site update May 4th 2011
A & J Tooling replied to OpinioNate's topic in Geocaching HQ communications
I can't get the new maps to show half the time when I zoom in or out. So I just get frustrated and go to the old maps. Hey! They work! Imagine that. Ya' know, change is good BUT if it ain't broke, don't fix it. -
Is Geocaching going too mainstream for you?
A & J Tooling replied to CacheFreakTim's topic in General geocaching topics
It's frustrating to see people lump newbies into one big pile of negativity. We were all new at one point. Pssst... check A & J Tooling's join date. I honestly believe if I had stumbled on this stuff in say 2010, instead of 2003, I'd still say to myself "self, what is all this parking lot crap"? Of course A & J Tooling will probably come back and say he started a new account last month after forgetting his 2005 username. Nope, I'm most likely one of the newest n00bies of them all. However, I didn't join because it was going mainstream. I stumbled upon it while planning a vacation. I'm not a 'true' cacher. Still, I used my 1st gps in 1991 and it weighed 72 lbs all told . When did you start? -
So, do you replace the log when it'll just get ruined again due to the crappy nature of the cache? I don't. I just write it off as a lost cause... and report it as needing maintenance.

Have you ever been Geocaching in a dream?
A & J Tooling replied to CacheFreakTim's topic in General geocaching topics
Dreams about caching huh? Wow, who knew? ..........odd people hereabouts.... -
Something else to think about, is the fact of the wind farm and this area just might be deemed critical infrastructure which would make the placement of the cache illegal per Homeland Security policies (if it is indeed on a transmission line). I can't tell but it looks like it is on a power trasmission pole. Is that allowed in California? Was permission given by the owner of the pole? She might just not be a crackpot as first assumed.

A & J Tooling replied to CacheFreakTim's topic in General geocaching topics
Yesterday on the way home from work, I went to 6 caches. 4 I left and didn't bother with because someone just threw something at the end of a road in a local dumping ground and logged it as a cache. Why would I want to see dead (and stinking) deer carcasses and the local trash heap? Nothing special there except for the stench. I'm pretty sure that the person who did this was a n00bie with no cares but getting a placement under his belt. This is what going mainstream is doing. Yeah I could rack up numbers quick but it kinda' defeats the purpose of this sport/game/activity... -
Closest cache to Osama`s hideout
A & J Tooling replied to jpamusher's topic in General geocaching topics
Well now that they're making it a shrine perhaps we can get a cache placed there... -
But, you're the one being a bully. She is in her part of the world and we're intruding on her. She feels threatened and intimidated and you're re-enforcing that behavior. One mans freedom fighter is another mans terrorist.

Extreme Caching with Tour guide?

Or you can pay someone to actually go out and find it for you. Hey, maybe I can work that into my kids' allowences? -

Good short term. Bad long term. After the dust settles and go back to the way things were or as close as possible, things will be worse off. -
New smilies (in found And DNflog)
A & J Tooling replied to sword fern's topic in General geocaching topics
I can't believe this is actually an issue. Hey, the site works better, thanks a lot! -
Now, now. let's not bring common sense into this argument. You're gonna' ruin all the fun. People should be awarded free year subscriptions or something when common sense prevails in a thread.

Has anyone ever hid a cache in water?
A & J Tooling replied to guitar slim's topic in General geocaching topics
So, if a bunch of people posted DNF's at the bottom of the sea one and request maintenance and needs achieved, dosen't the owner need to verify its still good or some such? Just askin' is all.... -

On a similar note, you have to fill an ammo can about half full of concrete to hold it underwater. Will it actually stay 100% dry if you do? I ask because I have a HUGE ammo can I want to hide and half full of concrete would help take up a lot of the interior space. My other idea was to fill it with spray foam and embed a film canister inside so it's the biggest micro EVER! I was going to do the same thing but actually put a nano in a 55 foot shipping container and bury it but I was informed that burying is wrong (rightfully so) so I nixed the idea. -
What to say when you get caught.
A & J Tooling replied to LuckyPlan's topic in General geocaching topics
Just had someone ask me if I found it yet, 3 times in 3 days. Each time I had already found it and was getting back in my car.
