  1. Going to my first event to honor those who lost their lives on this day ten years ago. Hope it don't rain. My 1st event. 2 hour drive.
  2. Currently I have six wooden containers in my backyard going through a weathering regiment to see what handles the elements the best. One has been submerged in my pool for 2 months (behind the steps) with no leaks yet. Wood will last if handled correctly and made to take the abuse of those with less handling know-how.
  3. On #10, you offer 3 regular choices and the fourth choice is 'neither'.
  4. Use wood hardener if the wood is soft. Then seal and use poly on it. Make sure to put some type of sealer in all nail/screw holes. If possible route a cut in the lip and line with a thin piece of rubber. It'll last a few years even in the Florida area.
  5. I also noticed when my son uses a gps'r, they go haywire with all that metal around. Messes with reception or something.
  6. Make the box out of ipe. It'll last a thousand years.
  7. I always log a dnf and if it is because of flooding or PI or other reasons, I state that in my log. I try to let the owner know the reason why. Sometimes it's just because I'm blinder then a bat. I tell 'em that too.
  8. Most of mine have been magnetic, hidden under or on the bottom of something.
  9. Depends on the wood and finish. There are piers that have withstood 50 plus years of constant abuse from the sea.
  10. You mean, like the Olympics? Yea, I worked pretty close to some people in the Olympics one year. The kids were pretty down to earth about the whole ordeal. It was their trainers and parents and offical government lacky's that made it a mess.
  11. On one hand, you complain about not signing and the next you complain if they sign too much? If I gotta' get that little thingy out of that container, you betcha' I'm leaving my mark and you'll not be able to question it.
  12. It's just a game. It's only a game...
  13. We have one near here that is in a wetland. Get lost there and you're gonna' be lost for awhile. It's awesome.
  14. Get as close as possible to the trunk of tree and shine a high powered flashlight about. Plastic and metal will reflect the light.
  15. The hardest in my area is nowhere near the actual GZ. Some kids found it and threw it in some grapevine/poison ivy mounds of mangled mess. I'll wait for winter to attempt it again.
  16. Hey, the faster you go on gravel, the less bumps you actually hit. Your wheels are still up in the air when you hit the other side. Kinda' like hydroplaning but on gravel. Drive slow and you catch the entire 'washboard'.
  17. It's never bothered me. Some of us are just lucky.
  18. I've seen many bombs in my life. Amazingly, I've never seen a real pipe bomb. They are not as 'threatening' as some would think. A few kids, most likely in a big city used them or gangs or other would be bad arses and next thing you know, the press get a hold of it and now it's a major issue...
  19. UV light and some LED lights will make most man made items appear slick or shiney. Natural stuff will be flat or dull. So any metals or plastics will stick out like crazy in a pine tree hide or in some leaves. Passive night vision goggles will show shadows as darker then their surrondings. So looking into a tree or brush pile, the manmade object will appear green and the rest darker. Thermal imaging devices will give different layers or shades to different temputures. So manmade objects actual shape and size will be a totally different color then everything around it since it absorbs heat differently then the stuff it's hidden in. Hey, before you freak out on the tools used, if it's avaliable for use, why waste a good resource?
  20. I see posts where people go online, clearly state it is gone and post a found it. They play their way. I play mine. There is no prise at the end. Nothing but bragging rights.
  21. I've found hard ones and missed easy ones. A lot of people won't post a DNF when they can't find 'em. It is part of the fun for me. If I found every one without trying, I'd quit this sport pretty quickly.
  22. I've heard a rumor of a LPC in the middle of the woods, on an island in the middle of a pond, in a burned out tree...
  23. I don't have a camera to take photos. I think I have one on my phone but all I can do with that is hit a couple of buttons and say 'hello'.
  24. I've logged a DNF in my area 3 times for the same cache and I've been over the area with a fine tooth comb. I've looked for it with a thermal imaging device at night and with a buried cable/ metal detector and shining lights in the area at night. At least 6 DNF's before me. D/T 1, 1 1/2 stars. Other people have found it since. I never once considered asking or posting a needs archived (well, maybe once).
  25. Be seen with something like that in the middle of nowhere and see the reactions you get.
