  1. Planning an Easter weekend get-away and wanted to know if there were any rest stop caches along 69 south from Ft. Wayne to Indy, 65 south to 64, or 64 west to about Evansville. Won't have time for any that are off the interstates but could grab a quick one if it happens to be at a rest stop. TIA! 2. Well, I don't visit the forums much anymore and just came across this. I'm curious as to whether anyone has approached the DNR regarding geocaching. With the large number of caches in the state parks, I find it difficult, if not impossible, to believe that they are not aware of them. I've not dealt with any state park officials but have had great success with county parks' departments. Both LaGrange county and Noble county parks were very receptive to geocaching. LaGrange county did a write up on geocaching in their parks newsletter and Noble county did an article in the local newspaper about a multi-cache that I placed in one of their parks. I also know that St. Joe county parks has put out their own caches that I've heard are quite good. I do agree that an organized approach would be the best way to keep geocaching a viable activity in our state parks. I'll try to keep an eye on this thread and see what develops... 3. Thru-hiking the AT is our retirement plan! Of course that's a long way off as I haven't even worked enough yet to be eligible to social security... I don't have any links but know that I've found lots of info on the web. Good luck, wish we had a target date set! 4. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=11485&log=y&decrypt= Of course, if it'd been closer to home, we'd have found it eventually! Attempted (and failed) on Sept. 30th. 5. We're planning a fall 2003 vacation to AR and MO. A big part of our planning is highpointing so Magazine Mt. will be one of our destinations. Hope there's a cache or two around to hunt also. I don't know the situation in Arkansas as far as wanting to increase or decrease visitation to their parks. If they're trying to get more people to visit, they really shouldn't discount geocaching as a draw, even to out-of-staters. Magazine Mountain is a definite for us, but we would be willing to pay to enter other state parks for a chance to hunt for a cache. We visited FL, GA, and TN this past year. Part of our selection of places to see was based on the availability of caches to hunt and/or highpoints. As geocaching becomes more popular, so too will increase the number of people willing to go out of their way (and more importantly to the powers-that-be, willing to pay entrance fees) for the opportunity to hunt a cache. Our county park system has figured this out and has embraced geocaching 100% GeoMedic - team leader of GeoStars Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect.
  6. and it was following an almost 3 mile hike! We kind of guessed from the cache description and rating that it wasn't supposed to be sitting in the open. And yes, it was a disappointment, we love the hunt! We rehid it in the area of ground zero (according to our GPS) and in a manner we thought fit the difficulty rating. E-mailed the owner indicating what we did and he replied saying it sounded like we put it right in his original hiding place. Still enjoyed the hike but do wish people would put a little effort into rehiding caches... 7. I work in EMS and don't use most of those items in any given week. Are gunshot wounds really a major concern for geocaching?! Maybe I need to find a new game... I do carry first aid stuff with us, 4x4's, betadine, an ace wrap, and lots of tape. A good tape job can fix most anything... I like the idea of a mini first aid kit. I voted good idea/wouldn't trade 'cause we always carry stuff but I like the concept. Like others, I like the personal touch when it comes to trades. 8. I am very eclectic when in comes to musical taste but have found very few CD's that I like start to finish. I love being able to pick and chose songs from favorite CD's and create my own masterpieces. Downloading is pretty cool too. My absolute favorite CD to date has tracks from Kiss, Toby Keith, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Gordon Lightfoot, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Venga Boys, Nine Inch Nails, and several others. Don't listen to that one when the kiddies are along though. Forgot all about Devo, I'll have to see if I can find some of their songs online. I don't listen to anything while actually on a hunt but like to on the drive to and fro and also when researching hunts on the website. 9. Most of my friends/coworkers have very clean vehicles. Mines a pit. I can blame it on the kids (3) but I'm just as big a culprit. Not only do I not litter, I also recycle so I can't even ditch stuff at the gas station. Every once in a while I hit the recycle stations (no curbside pickup here!) and reclaim the seats and floor space. And yes, much of the trash is related to geocaching... 10. but I broke my cell phone at work today. No tears though, it wasn't my GPS! GeoMedic - team leader of GeoStars Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect.
  11. and humor in the resonses... I voted for #1. I'm a mom first and we do this as a family activity. I don't think I'd be laughing if I ran across such an item in a cache. It's been hard enough explaining the various pieces of discarded clothing we've found in the woods! 12. My dad is an avid biker (as in bicycle) and has used it on dogs. Says it works great. GeoMedic - team leader of GeoStars Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect.
  13. I work every Thursday, holiday or not (EMS). Would have loved to have gone caching but can't complain too much. That double-time sure is nice on the old paycheck! GeoMedic - team leader of GeoStars Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect.
  14. An early EMS partner of mine used superglue all the time for cuts on himself. Never had a problem that I knew of. quote:if someone is impaled on broken branch or has arterial bleeding, bandaids are a joke and those little gauze pads aren't much better. The most important thing with arterial bleeding is to get it stopped not what you put on it. Anything that is relatively clean can work as a bandage. If something is impaled in someone, it is generally best to secure it in place and get them help A.S.A.P. Of course there are exceptions depending on just how far from help you are and if the object might interfere with the airway. Under most circumstances though, an impaled object is best removed under very controlled conditions, i.e. an emergency room. Fortunately, these types of injuries are very rare. 16. but I know exactly where you're coming from. It's not limited to public hunting areas. Every year we find trash left behind by people hunting illegally on our land. Not as bad as when we first moved here, we've made it quite clear that we won't tolerate it, but we probably will never completely stop it. I'm sure like most situations, it is a minority giving all the decent hunters a bad name. We are a hunting family as are most of our neighbors. That's one big reason we catch so many trespassers, we're out there too. As far as hunters being "nature people", I'm sure most are. But there are far too many just like you described. Only interested in getting liquored up and shooting anything that moves. In addition to trash, we also find the remains of 4-5 deer every year in our pines that someone shot but was too lazy to track. We let people track wounded deer on our property, all they have to do is ask. For some, it's too much work and much easier to just shoot another one and hope it falls right next to their stand. I'm a little peeved with hunters right now too. Mostly because I ran across 3 of them in our lane tonight on the way home. What is it about private property that is so hard to understand?!!! 17. Thanks for letting us be a part of the project! GeoMedic - team leader of GeoStars Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect.
  18. Any chance we could just mail pics to whoever is setting this up? We take pictures at most of our cache finds (have forgotten a few times even when toting the camera the whole way!). The thought is to put together a geocaching scrap book but we always get double prints because we often cache with friends. One thing that might be interesting is to also include some of the more intriguing log entries. These could be accompanied by pics or stand alone. I love reading log entries (online and in physical log books) and really enjoy some of the mental images they present. Perhaps this could be a separate project but I think it would combine well with a photo-journal type publication. 19. We've found caches in all types of containers. Some were recently placed in tupperware, or tupperware-type containers and were soggy or downright swimming. The lids seem to be the weak point, either cracked or just not sealed correctly by the last finder. We've found several ammo cans, some that hadn't been found for months, and they've all been dry and in good shape. Of course, this applies only to full-sized caches. We've found some mini's and micros that have served their purposes well and were obviously not ammo cans. We've hidden some mini's in the plastic army hazmat cannisters and these seem to hold up well. But for the most part, our preference both as hiders and finders is ammo cans. We especially hunt these out when we're looking to place a travel bug so as to insure as much as possible that it will be well sheltered until it's next pick-up. 20. quote:...am I the only one in the US (or anywhere for that matter) that will be glued to the TV tonight. I watched election results for awhile (with popcorn, BTW) but it got boring quick. The only race outside of my voting area that I was interested in was called way early. It was one that actually garnered national attention (Chocola v. Long-Thompson). On a local level, we had some very interesting and hotly contested races but unfortunately our little hole-in-the-wall county doesn't even merit coverage from the nearest TV stations. This is a county that has the weatherman consistantly standing in front of it during the look at the weather maps. Of course being a largely Amish community, I guess the argument could be made that most of here don't even have a TV... I tried looking up results online but that failed also. I'm going to bed and will check the paper in the morning... GeoMedic - team leader of GeoStars Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect.

  22. It's all part of the game. Sure gets frustrating at times, we spent a good two hours on vacation recently just trying to find parking coordinates that were given! Sure wasn't the cache hiders fault, we just weren't familiar with the area and didn't research well enough in advance. Still enjoyed the cache. On the way home from the same vacation we planned on hitting 4 highpoints. We also hoped to find a couple of caches. One cache was *only* 5 miles from the GA highpoint and had a waterfall as well. Turns out 5 miles in the mountains can mean a lot longer drive than we anticipated and on a one lane dirt road to boot! It was a lot of fun and the waterfall beautiful. We spent too much time there after spending too much time at the highpoint. Rather than just rush from point-to-point we decided we'd just come back to the area again. We ended up with only 2 highpoints on the return trip (3 for the entire trip) but had a great time. Found several caches (don't remember the exact number) but certainly could have found many more if we'd just went for easy park-n-grab types. Nothing against these, it's just not why we got into geocaching in the first place. 23. For kids trades, I think they has some O.K. stuff. I've also been to the local flea market where I found some shark's teeth (probably boring in FL but kinda cool in IN) and fossils that I picked up to stock one of my themed caches. I was also hoping to go to one of the area Rendezvous/Pow Wows where I remember seeing neat things like arrowheads, dream catchers, beaded items, etc. I didn't make it this year but will try again next year and hopefully stock up on some cache goodies. GeoMedic - team leader of GeoStars Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect.
  24. not as a signature item though or even a trade. We have tried putting them only in caches we think would be water-tight as we did not know what kind of mess they'd leave if they got wet. In a baggy, I guess it would be fine even if the cache got a little wet. Sure might help the log books. Cool idea! 25. with 4 in one day. They were all in a state park but required 5+ miles of hiking when it was all said and done. We considered this a pretty big accomplishment since we geocache with 3 kids, the youngest having just turned 3 last month. She hiked the whole way, we quit doing the carrying thing a couple of months ago. GeoMedic - team leader of GeoStars
