  1. And when you make additional waypoints, could cache owners name them with at least the first 10 characters from the cache name. So they appear next to their associated cache in software listings.

eg cache is called Noahs Ark

parking on A591 in a layby

so Additional waypoint would be called 'Noahs Ark layby on A591' to appear next to its cache.

    or am I missing something?

  2. They all work on Mac too

I've just downloaded Firefox2 for Mac OS10.3 after my bank seems to have given up with Safari. Can you get these geocaching scripts that make it really handy for caching for a Mac version, or is it just PC only?

Greasemonkey does not install with Seamonkey, boo hoo! Oh well the Mycroft searches do.

    Thanx

  3. I'm not familiar with the eTrex, but does it use the micro SD card that the 60 CSx uses? If so and you set save tracks to SD card you should be able to pop the SD (with micro to regular SD adapter) in your PDA and transfer them that way.

I cheaped out and got the GPS that doesn't have the card slots

I'm doing this with a laptop running XP and Memory-map 2004. I connect eTrex to laptop with serial cable, download track into Memory-map. Times are GMT, which is confusing, in Memory-map.

Memory-map should run on Windows mobile. So with right lead should be possible with xda. Memory-map sell USB to serial connector, not Garmin. But your lead looks good. With Memory-map's USB to serial lead you specify connection as COM5 in Memory-map program, not USB.

  4. Let's hope weather improves from current rain and low pressure. Don't want to camp in rain :-(

    Not really inviting.

We came, we saw, we visited Hestan Island. See logs. We had a 'window of opportunity' of over four hours long. Due to exceptionally low spring tide, 'Rack' was exposed 2 hours before high water. Got back to the cars at sunset. Everything went as planned, right down to the mud being softest nearest the shore, firmest nearest the stream.

  5. Hey i think this would be a good catagory but we would need some better classification on the size of the rapid so just post if you have ideas or think i should get this group going

There is already a category for canoe kayak journey access points. ie places to launch and park.

As an experienced white water kayaker, like some of the other posters of this thread, recording the rapids coords will only be possible from a stable eddy or from the bank when inspecting (scouting) it. Both of which I'm sure an experienced canoeist or kayaker can do. Now taking a picture of said rapid . Hmmm ..... Would prefer to do that from the bank. Camera not waterproof.

I like the proposal, as it would compliment the river guide book description, by locating exactly where the next POI is on the river. POI = Point of interest. ususally preceded by a LES = Last eddy Syndrome. I digress.

The nature of canoesport has changed. Younger paddlers are looking for the short contained canoe experience, not the long journey of old. Although in UK, the river journey is still part of the club scene. I generalise. Guide books are now including information about notable play spots on a river. So a category about static canoe sites might appeal to younger audience.

Perhaps following on from the theme of skateparks, the category could be 'Park and Huck' canoe features. These are playspots on water, and require no complex shuttling of cars, and provide a place to perform acrobat stunts in your canoe or kayak. eg AUGSBURG artificial slalom course built for 1972 Olympics, Holme Pierrepont (UK) and Skelwith Force Skelwith Force UK river guide

Famous ones are Skookumchuck tidal feature Skooumchuck, Tryweryn WW course

This category will appeal to white water canoeists and at first sight may be too specific. But I feel any waymarker can add to this proposed category. We all come across canoeists enjoying the river on our walks. A bit of research to see whether rapid has been canoed may be needed before submitting. I can think of a few 'falls' near me which are getting serious inspection, and are off the river grading scale. (There is already a category for natural waterfalls.)

As I'm not a Premium member, I may even join to help with this category :-) :P

  6. Could I propose a catergory of Civic recycling sites and other public places to dispose of recylable materials.

As waymarkers and geocachers are often out of their 'home' patch, knowing where the local dump or recycle centre is, could be very useful.

In Europe, councils are being pushed by legislation, to reduce and recycle. Common items are picked up by kerbside collection, but non popular items you have to recycle yourself. eg batteries, plastic, tin foil, waste car oil

Cumbrian libraries (UK) take yoghurt pots, stamps, tin foil on behalf of charities.

Charity shops take clothes, mobile phones, books, spectacles etc.

    Charity warehouses take furniture.

Some larger supermarkets take plastic pots, phone directories.

Obviously times of opening, items accepted, permits needed would be among the variables

Also the URL of your nearest FREECYCLE.org site.

I apologise if this has been aired before. I did search the forums.

I am not a premium member so can not manage this category. Maybe I'll join.

(Any spelling mistakes are purely intentional.)

  7.

    Well, the survey said....

I checked, there are 428 additional waypoints on active UK caches with EXACTLY the same coordinates as the main ones.

No longer possible to add waypoint with same coords as main page coords. AW submit page won't allow duplicate coords. I agree with Alistair_uk, AWs can have multiple uses.

Also some people use presence of AW parking coords, to filter cache search. i.e. exclude those without stated parking. So I give parking coords to save others the hassle of finding parking.

  8. Nope, its not just you. I too have been having the same problem. Now I copy the email before I hit the send button as I was becoming REALLY cross at losing my messages!

been using Opera browser for built in speel chekar, rather than Firefox. Thought it was browser at first.

Not a server boffin, but felt it was a session timeout problem. Felt we only had a few minutes to write and send. Had similar problem on other sites.

Back button (Alt+Left) in Opera took me back to scribblings. Not lost what I'd written.

  9.

Did anyone see the week-ahead weather report on Countryfile? If so, what was the news/guesswork for Cumbria next weekend? Ta!

BBC News 24 give a prediction for few days ahead also, on the half and full hour. BBC2 late night on Thursday (around 1am Friday) give a weekend forecast.

Its raining now. So seaweed wet!

  10. Bit of a bump :)

I've had no replies to my emails to the NT folks in the Wasdale area - I want to hide a cache on the mountain on the way up and as this is NT land, I'm asking if they're cool with it. Does anyone have contact details for a cache-friendly local official? Any suggestions for people to approach would be appreciated.

ASKED MY friend who used to work in NT HQ Grasmere about who to contact in Wasdale. She suggested the NT valley warden, but could not remember his exact name. Just that it was Colin ??????

    will investigate further.

  11. That's a bad weekend for me, so I won't be able to make it. Which is a pity as it looks as though it will be great.

Look out for the elephant Mimetolith when you go over to Hestan Island. I hope the event goes well for you?

Thanx for adding to bookmark list. Have you seen photos on Hestan Hop page of elephant?. Event is also during week running up to date. Take some more time off, join us.

  12. No, you said low water was 26 minutes before sunset plus the causeway is just 1/2 mile long and takes 10 minutes to cross so no problems there. Indeed, no doubt the journey can commence before the low tide mark and can conclude with the sun still in the sky

Since no-one can give me any information on how long the causeway would be water free I have contacted the Scottish Ramblers in the area to give their opinion of the proposed journey (maybe they might join us on the day) and will report back with conclusions in due course. :(

    Cheers!

    Seasider

Look forward to meeting Seasider. Which day, date?

Usually on these forum threads about events, people discuss BBQs and electric hookups, this one seams to have gone off on tangent. It really good to get some corroborating info about tide and sunset. Good to compare info.

May not even make it to Hestan Island, as could get swept away by Seacat wash on cliffs near Kirkholm earlier in week. If survive that, then probably die of exhaustion cycling into 'theres gold in them hills'. Once recovered from that, almost certainly get swallowed by a bog on the way to Merrick. So chances of being alive by end of week are slim. Hestan will be a relief, less than 1 km on level terrain.

My only visits to Hestan Island are last week, when I kayaked solo across to it, and last November walked out to headland, but was thwarted by tide not being low enough, so could not cross to island. Hence choice of spring tides. Walk across headland is straight forward, tricky bit is waiting to set off across causeway.

Like Seasider I've explored my local estuaries (Morecambe Bay, Ravenglass, Leven and further away Severn) and intend to apply my knowledge gained to this adventure. (see co-ords in sig)

I doubt there will be any families as schools will have returned in England. Choice of date was determined by the tides and sunset. Been planning this week since December 2005, but had to wait until finished recce of camp-sites, last week. Date is unfortunate as there are two other events on. Event will appeal to the few adventurous (not foolhardy) cachers that are out there, that don't want to run with the crowd, and want to find caches above 2/2. If there are 10 people during the whole week, in total, it'll be amazing. More likely one, myself.

Merrick will be more of a challenge.

Would The Forester consider being our base contact, when we walk out to Hestan? If not I have backup people.

Re. Coastguard, have a tale to tell.

Was night surfing the Morecambe Bay tidal bore in WW kayaks with friends. Had told Coastguard what we were doing. MRSC Liverpool is our centre. They did not know where we were talking about, and did not want to know about every little boat journey on the sea, as far as they were concerned. We thought it was best to tell them, which we'd done.

Didn't tell the police and everyone in Grange-o-sands.

Someone in Grange-o-sands saw lights out in estuary at night, called police. Who then proceeded to blind us with their search light as we tried to surf in, now blinded. That was the first time, nearly covered all the bases. Next times did not tell anyone. And did not use lights. Older, wiser now.

All adds to life's rich tapestry.

'The Sector base of the Solway is located in Dee Walk, Kirkcudbright with the Maritime Rescue Coordinating Sub Centre at Liverpool. Tel no (24hrs): 0151 931 3341' are responsible for Solway, including Hestan inlet.

    http://www.mcga.gov.uk/c4mca/mcga-dops-reg...lway_sector.htm

This is just one adventure during the week which people are welcome to share. Maybe someone else has some ideas for adventures in south west Scotland, with or without caches.

  13. Thanx to The Forester, sobering thoughts. Wish you were coming along.

I consider all those criteria The Forester mentioned to find the biggest tides to surf the tidal bores that occur in the estuaries round the UK. So looking at the opposite criteria will hopefully prove successful for this journey. Can always turn round before leaving mainland. Always ready for a DNF.

So ideally what we need is high pressure, NE Force 3 wind, cloudless sky.

Thanx also for the tidal predictions and sunset times. Realise time is potentially tight, but only need to get back onto mainland before absolute dark, (bring torch) which should not be for at least half an hour after sunset. Plenty of time to cross the RACK. Walking back on landrover tracks across the headland in the twilight will be comparatively easier.

BTW the cache owner set the cache at this time of year, under these conditions. And they got back to create the cache.

[Just been told off by my elder sister, for kayaking out to Hestan Island solo.]

Wonder what The Forester's opinion is of walking out on Thursday evening?

As with all these adventures, its a mental thing. Keeping your head together. That's not to say false bravado, more considered action, re-evaluating your position as you go along. Which is why we do it. If people don't want the challenge ....

  14. I have a Psion Revo. I have sometimes wondered if I could blow the cobwebs off it and use it for paperless caching. I was upset at the demise of Psion as they were far better than Palm and Wince at the time.

I use my REVO for caching. I store the cache page as a text file. Not tried to do mapping. Not enough brain in a REVO. Have made up a car charger for extended cache trips.

    Quickly, process is:

    hit decrypt clue first.

    copy cache name or GCcode.

Save cache page from Firefox as Text file, using copied name or GCcode as file name.

Use NOTESPAD.exe to strip out HTML code from text files.

Use BKReplacem to strip out common unwanted text.

    manually delete carriage returns.

    load onto REVO.

Phew. Its not quick. There's probably a web page viewer for REVO!

totally off topic, ancient Symbian fore runner kit

  15. Found a cache near Bedford UK, which is in a bird nesting box, in a wood. Nowt unusual except you don't need nesting boxes in a natural wood. So it looks ok, but isn't, as the bird entry hole is blocked. Had me fooled.

Also there is no plastic box to find for Councillor C B Ross GCM4BX. Description talks about 'container is divided into two parts'. Needless to say its not plastic and I had to ask a fellow cacher what was I looking for. He'd had to ask another cacher also. The 'container' did not look out of place, as it is made of natural materials. Just not naturally found there.

Look forward to more inventive containers.

  16. last week during a long run of superb weather for the UK, I kayaked across to a Scottish Island. Only 2 km off shore in a bay. Full report at GCQP7K. Owner suggested there was a FTF gift. But that did not motivate me. The adventure of getting there did. FTF was a bonus.

FTF was a bottle of Stella Artois beer. Best before end of June 2006. Good job I found it. Cache will not get many visitors.

Only problem is I can't drink beer, as body intolerant of grains.

So gave to beer swilling friend.

  17. Found accomm

    bunkhouse www.marthrown.com <-- for individuals

and wigwams www.barnsoulfarm.co.uk <-- for groups of 2 or more

    Just need decent weather.

Now been on a recce to Galloway.

    Found 4 camp-sites of note

Cheapest is BLADNOCH distillery, basic facilities, £6 per couple per night.

Mossyard Farm. Static field well kept. Touring field by shore is 800 m from toilet block £8 per couple per night.

Silvercraigs, Kirkcudbright. Council run touring site. Tourer pitches near toilets. off season price around £10.20 for four per night.

Barlochan, part of Gillespie Leisure Group. V posh about £12 per night. swimming pool etc

All have good facilities, including hook-up and free hot showers. Hope that helps next person who asks the same question.
