    Anyone know why you're supposed to twist them, wouldn't there be a possibility of twisting the head off?

     

    I found a video that described it like a bristle brush (will post it if I can find it again). It's not actually the head that gets twisted, it's the mouth part. It looks like a brush (barbed). If you pull the tick, it breaks apart because the barb does not release. If you twist it instead, it unscrews (for lack of a better word).

    Lets not forget the relative crappy battery life of smartphones compared to a good hand held GPSr.

    Also on the ruggedness, I Vibrant has a pretty tough screen, gorilla glass, and the device is pretty tough as I have dropped it a few times at home, but never out caching, go figure. Also there are plenty of rugged cases to buy for smart phones and if they can stand up to a drop in a parking lot then it should be good to go on everything but really sharp rocks(which I'm sure not many devices could withstand). As for the GPS it was pretty good and landed me on a couple caches and within 20 feet on others. I was just putting out some info and other suggestions on devices in the 150 range, and this is an option.

     

    Thanks for all the info. I stumbled across this post. I have been looking for a cheap phone option and I think your idea is a good one. I'm new to geocaching and just bought a nuvi to get started. I like the idea of multifunctional devices. I have regular gps units but nothing that can take data or maps.

     

    I don't think the fragile nature of a phone is a big deal either. If you want more durability and are worried you might get it wet you can do what I've done for years with cameras. Put it in a ziploc bag or similar bag.

    Need an email to join - What about young children?

    I just started out geocaching and like to take my grandson with me.

     

    I'd like to let him sign his finds and log them but he is too young for an email address.

     

    I know I could just make a fake email and check the emails for him but there has to be a better way for kids to join geocaching.com.

     

    How do you get around this limitation and get kids involved?

    Topo Maps etc.

    I'm still new to this but just did the same thing you are asking about. (I have a garmin nuvi 1490)

     

    I grabbed this file to use for PA trails http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/53/

     

    I had to use mapsource from garmin to load it into the nuvi.

     

    When you click on the downloaded file it install itself into mapsource.

     

    Open mapsource and you will see a pulldown menu that lets you choose a map to display.

     

    I found it easier to use the main map first to "see" the area I was interested in and then bring up the downloaded map of trails next (using the pulldown menu).

     

    Once I did this, all I had to do was use the select tool (polygon shape) and click over the area on the screen. It highlighted it and then all I had to do was click the icon that sends it to the gps unit.

     

    I tried to do it first with just the trails file selected but you cannot see where you are (looks blank). If you use the main map first, you guarantee that you are selecting the trails in your area.

    GSAK and POI Factory NUVI 1490t, Can I use both?

    I tested GSAK with my first PQ and it worked pretty well (still in the learning phase). (Garmin NUVI 1490T)

     

    I would like to use POI factory to help me locate BLM land and camping sites (I'll probably add others too).

     

    When I look at the NUVI folders I only see one file from my GSAK import for custom POI's.

     

    Do I need to somehow get the POI factory POI's into the GSAK database? Is that even possible? Or can I use POI factory to import GSAK's cache list?

     

    Can I just put my custom POI files from each of them onto a SD card and will the NUVI use them both at the same time?

     

    Just wondering if anyone has tried this and made it work.

    New to Geocaching, Question about Pennsylvania caches

    I'm new to geocaching and just got my premium membership.

     

    At first, I was hoping to use the pocket queries to get a list of caches in PA.

     

    I think I was a little over optimistic :)

     

    What I wanted to do was create a list of queries centered on Clarion, PA, with a radius of 75miles. This covers all the areas I might visit near family and all the routes I might take.

     

    Ideally, I am looking for queries that are in and around state parks and the Allegheny national forest. I am disabled and cannot walk too far so the route query might be a better idea for me (would appreciate opinions on this). I have a camper van and hope to do some overnight camping along the clarion river and in the national forest

     

    The 75mi pocket query I ran centered on Clarion says it found 500 caches. I told it to select all and then downloaded the list to my computer and opened it with GSAK. However, GSAK only shows 20 caches imported, all of them centered on Clarion PA (at least that part is correct).

     

    Can someone explain what I'm doing wrong, or give me a better idea how to get a list of PA caches?

     

    I have a 1490T garmin gps. I think it can store 1,000 poi's.
