  1. RE: JV4159 - From my understanding of NGS recoveries, the description trumps the coordinates. I live fairly close to the area, and I'm pretty sure this tower is the same one I saw there in the 60's....I'd hesitate to submit as "Destroyed" (unless you have hard evidence..say a 40's postcard pic of the area w/ a different tower)... ...now JV4161 - that's a different story (I myself logged that one as 'found" on GC.com, but definitely wouldn't w/ the NGS..hmm maybe I should change my GC log...) ..as the description mentions...this one definitely is NOT in "good" condition (for NGS standards)...
  2. Eligible finds for 6/25: KW1398/1934/N/N KW1399/1934/N/N - E
  3. Hmmm...I'm thinking the nice quet area that became the "MJ Mall" then regraded again to become Wal*Mart...
  4. only 1 eligible find for 6/21: JV2062/1942/N/N
  5. I-81 came thru in this area in about 1965...this one puzzles me because of the lack on info on the AZ - all the other tri-stations in this area list a description if there is an associated AZ ...
  6. Forgive me if this has been in a thread before - I have noticed that on the NGS datasheets for Triangulation Stations in what I've seen referred to as the "box score" (see example for KW2112 below) the AZ mark has a different "series" PID number (I see this w/ RM's sometimes also - although they seem to be listed this way when they aren't in the NGS database seperately) KW2112|---------------------------------------------------------------------| KW2112| PID Reference Object Distance Geod. Where would I find for example "CK7494" - it doesn't seem to be in the NGS database(including destroyed's) and this is deep in KW**** territory... 2.) If I run across one of these that is destroyed, would I submit w/ the PID of the main station or it's own non-standard PID? 3.) Does this make sense? Thanks for any info, - E
  7. Gosh I miss the desert.... Eligible finds from 6/14: JV1996/1935/N/N JV2046/1935/N/N - E
  8. thanks - that's kind of what I figured - most of the tilted ones I've run across have been tilted a little more than this one and thus more obvious. I think I'm going to have to throw a level & protractor in the trunk w/ the rest of the benchmarking tools ! You know, after a while your trunk starts to look like a mobile CSI lab
  9. ...it's usually the item itself, unless specified in the description. Sometimes the Geocaching website will say "no descriptive text available" but if you go to NGS's site http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/datasheet.prl, it will be listed...
  10. ...seems like every tri-station I've run across lately is tilted “to one degree or another”. Submitted for your approval: JV4198 Would this be “FOUND GOOD” or “FOUND POOR” ? - E
  11. ..I've got quite a few in my area that I need to get to, but haven't because - they're currently covered by ticks & poison ivy - or - - the owner isn't ever around to ask permission to hunt ...I've got one a few min. from my house I haven't been able to "occupy" and it's driving me crazy...just a little too far from the road (heck, ArtMan, YOU've even seen it from afar!). I've stopped by maybe a dozen times, but no one was home...sigh! - E
  12. ..if you're in a rural area, you'll find a metal detector very helpful !

  15. You mean Dave actually set them in 1901? - wow ! - by looking at the wear in the disk, the stamping in question looks much more "current" than the rest of the disk

  17. ...sorry Harry - I was tying up the server last nite with MY backlogs !
  18. Speaking of the USGS......sorry to venture slightly off-topic, but where do you get hold of the USGS benchmark database ? I haven't has much luck milling around their site (but havent done a whole lot of searching either )
  19. Ditto ! As a map fiend - I look forward to the updated maps each month....how do you find the time ?!
  20. Radio Shack also seems to have fairly deep discounts on GPSr's from time-to-time - saw the Explorist200 on sale for $70 after discount/Magellan rebate. They don't carry a lot of different models, however...
