  1. Please note that these radios are not purely FRS. They are GMRS radios and require a license to use. The license is about $75 for 5 years and covers your entire nuclear family. AtP

  3. Yes, but all the other threads have clearly stated that the Captain of the flight has the final authority, regardless of company policy. So always ask the Flight Attendants to ask the Captain if it's ok to use your GPS. One guy was even asked to ride in the cockpit (on an older plane) because they didn't have a GPS built in. AtP PS I am serious about advising you to search the board for earlier threads, this is not just a "I'm too lazy to write a proper response". There's just too much info for me to do it justice.
  4. I believe there is a charge for using Terraserver. AtP
  5. Actually, that's for my RC cars, I just use it for other batteries (not NIMH!) too. I have a Monster charger, but I want the good Ray-O-Vac for my NIMH batteries. AtP
  6. That would be decent, I guess. I'm kinda fussy about things like batteries. I have a $150 quick charger for my ni-cads. AtP
  7. The last thing I want to see is another device with a proprietary battery that I can only use for that device and have to throw away when it goes bad. And then pay $45 for a replacement battery. Respectfully, AtP

  9. Manifold is for making maps, period. It just so happens that the final release of the DNA is supposed to accept imported maps from a wide variety of sources. You'll have to ask Markusby for more info. AtP

  11. quote:Originally posted by infosponge: A Navitrak would be on that list for sure. The Navitrack Digital Navigational Assistant with an SD card reader and 128 MB SD card would be at the top of my list I think, followed closely by Manifold System mapping software and a really nice Dell laptop to run it on. Add a 76S (always cary a backup) and an external antenna, mounting accessories as needed and I'd say you're set. The 76S is in the mix purely because the DNA uses a "viewfinder" type view rather than a screen. If you're not mountain biking or riding a motorcycle, snowmobile, jet ski, etc., that requires both hands (and eyes!), you can skip it. AtP

  13. Click on "search" near the top of the page, type "airplane" in the top field, click the Find button. http://opentopic.Groundspeak.com/0/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=1750973553&f=3000917383&m=9690941024&r=2190906324#2190906324 That's the first link, but there are others with good info. AtP
  14. quote:Originally posted by RAD Dad: Atilla The Pun, what would you consider illegal? I mean, if I made a mix CD of some of my favorite songs, would you break that? What about a tape? If it was obviously a "bootleg" tape or CD with band names I recognize (e.g. Lead Zeplin, Beasty Boys, Limp Bizkit), probably. I am not the Copyright Police, nor do I wish to play them while Geocaching. I do wish to promote what is good for this sport, see my previous post for why I don't think this is good for the sport. The RIAA has way too much money and way to much greed, and way too many laywers for me to want to get them involved with Geocaching. quote:So far as items such as pocket knives, lighters, emergency fire kits, and so on, I think those are good items to place in caches that are in more remote areas, as they are hiking essentials, but not good ideas for areas such as urban caches, parks frequented by children (many unsupervised who might stumble on your cache while playing hide and seek in the bushes or something or exploring) I have picked up some small pocket knives, and keychain pocket knives for caches, but only for ones that are out in the woods. So far as a cigarette in a cache goes, that is an absolute no no. I like to smoke fine cigars, and have thought about doing a cache that would invlolve trading cigars, but it is a direct violation of the geocaching rules, plus, because I have no way of knowing who will find the cache, it would be irresponsible to place something in a cache that would be illegal for someone to have, and anyone under 18 can not legally have tobacco products. Now, maybe if somehow I could do a cache that was in a location that only adults can enter, like in a cigar shop or a bar or something, that might work, but I doubt that would get approved as it would seem commercial. RAD Dad, I think we're in agreement on everything else. AtP
  15. I'm not sure who you were talking about from that previous, lively, discussion. My take on the CD-Rs is if I know it's illegal, it's broken on the spot. If I don't know, then it's not my business unless I choose to trade for it. Moral and ethical issues aside, Geocaching has gotten some questional press recently. Questions about whether Geocaching is an acceptable use of public land, Nat'l parks, etc. have been raised. All it would take is for a couple of caches with high-dollar warez, or the RIAA to step in about major music transfers to make a splash in the news and we could be looking at a rapidly diminishing playing field for this sport. 18. quote:Originally posted by Alan2:So here's my Mapsource data. Topo for Colorado is 31.3 MB or twice the data in Mapsend for the same area! So although you can store more data in Magellan because of the larger memories, you apparantly get half the contour and other geographical detail. So now the question is why do they do that? Certainly Magellan has the memory space. Is it because the resolution is less on the Magellan screen than the Vista or what? Or that the maps they bought from third parties has less detail? Where's our experts? Alan It could also be a difference in the way the data is compressed. I don't know that, I'm spectulating. AtP
  19. I have heard that the Magellan 330X is available for $125 from CompUSA. Add in the $50 rebate from Magellan's Web site and you have a nice mapping GPS for $75. AtP
  20. Popups stink. Take control of your system resources and your own bandwidth with The Proxomitron. This is not an add, the Proxomitron is free. Just unzip it to a folder, drop a shortcut to the exe into your Startup group, and tell your browser to use localhost for a proxy server. Good-bye popups and other advertising! AtP

  24. You can get a Pentium 150-200 MHz system (Compaq or HP) refurbished for around $99 at alot of computer chain stores. AtP
  25. I've seen the Prism for under $200 lately. That's pretty inexpensive for a color PDA. And I have a friend who's owned a Handspring (can't remember the model) for a couple of years and never had a problem with it. The Cassiopea and the iPaq are both very nice, but way beyond what I'm willing to pay for a portable PC in the forseeable future. AtP
