  1. Just remove everything from your signature line (MyPop then probably Profile, but I haven't looked). AtP

Memory card Mapsource roads & recreation CD Auto quick release swivel mount 12V power cord PC data cord Best online price with 2 day shipping $745.00 Hmm, the display is a little smaller than what I'm talking about, 3.8" compared to 6.4" diagonal (a very minor point). However at nearly $600 for just the unit, plus memory and maps. Do you use this for geocaching? With what I am proposing you would simply unplug your handheld GPS from the mapping screen and start walking. And as I said in an earlier post, I am very dissapointed with Magellan's maps. Other's have voiced dissapointment in Garmin's maps. I would like to be able to have the option to add 3rd party maps to my GPS, but the GPS manufacturer's have a defacto monopoly on maps for their units. Oh, and on the subject of "reasonable price", I meant to type "around $200 US". Under would be nice, but looking a the price of color LCD's, I'm not counting on it. AtP

  4. Thanks for the encouragement, Top. I guess we need to define "reasonable price". As I've said in several other posts, I would like to keep the price under $200. I am re-iterating this because people keep posting about their really cool $2,000.00 solutions to this problem. Not every geocacher has two grand to drop on that laptop or tricked out camcorder. They are really cool toys and I think it would be neat if everyone could afford them, but we can't, or choose not to. The other reason I want to embark on this project is that the Magellan maps (and from what I hear Garmin maps) are waaaaay off. This is anoying. Which street am I on if I don't already know? I'm off a major highway by 50'-100' according to my GPS. Nothing wrong with the GPS except the map that's in it. Also, someone may not need or want a better GPS than their Maggy 315 or their spouse may not like trying to make sense of the numbers. But a nice color map about the size of your palm (ok, the size of my palm) that never has to be refolded has merit, IMHO. Respectfully, AtP
  5. Everyone assumes I'm taking the video off of a mapping GPS. You are wrong. You will be able to hook up your Magellan 315 to this critter (if I can make it work) and it will show your location. AtP
  6. Bergum, This isn't going to be a PC, CE, or Palm device. This is going to be a proprietary device with a map in it that will read your data from your GPS and display your location and heading on a map. AtP
  7. Somebody posted in a previous thread that it would be cool if everyone started posting the co-ords of a nearby land mark (e.g. flagpole at the trail head) taken the same day they placed the cache. Then when you get to that place you compare the co-ords in your GPS to what the placer posted and your GPS should take you exactly to the cache.... I like the hunt at the end though. It would be too easy if the GPS took you right to the cache. AtP

  11. I put something general in there, ok? I'm not overly paranoid and no, I don't "live like that". I refuse to live in fear of terrorists or other thugs. On the other hand I don't advertise, either. Not that I can't be found fairly easily.... AtP

Have you considered a compromise? Drive to within 30 mi. of the cache, then bike the rest of the way? quote:2) A large majority of the extant caches around me are virtual caches, and while I may visit them, I dont log them as finds. So i have allready visited nearly all in my area. Why not log them? You found them. Or did I just open the "what's a real cache?" can of worms again? quote:3) The 100 mile radius is very deceptive up here - THERE ARE NO ROADS (well, there really are 2, BUT THATS IT!!!) To get to a cache 100 miles way in any easterly direction I would have to travel several hundred miles, and I just dont have that kind of time. Maybe when i retire.....40 years from now. See my response to 1). AtP
  16. Drew, I was pretty discouraged when I wrote that last post. Since then I have decided to go ahead and research this anyway, even if it's just for me. Thanks, AtP
  17. Cool, glad you're enjoying your MeriGreen! BTW, please turn off your caps lock. All caps is the equivilant of shouting. Thanks, AtP

  19. I'm not sitting at my computer at home (i.e. I'm at work) so I won't swear to this, but I think there's a place in MapSend where you tell it which GPS you have. If you told it you have a 330 it's not going to generate a file larger than 8MB. AtP
  20. FYI, neither the Vista nor the MeriPlat has a connection for an external antenna. You'll need a Garmin Map 76s for that. And if you were considering a V you can afford a 76s. AtP

  23. The Vista has a patch antenna and looses signals where my Map 330x (same antenna as the Platinum) still has a 3d lock. The Platinum has a 3d compass, you don't have to hold it flat for a good directional fix with or without sattelites. The Vista must be held flat, both for reception and for the compass to work. I'd get the the Platinum if that's the two GPS's you're trying to decide between. Oh, no SD card on the Vista, up to 128 MB external memory (SD card) on the Plat. AtP
  24. The default datum for Geocaching.com is WGS-84. If you have your GPS set to a different datum then all of your co-ords will be off, even if you are using the same grid (UTM or Lat/Lon, etc.) listed on the cache page. AtP
