Do the geocachers in your area ever have get-togethers? Maybe if your wife met a few of the people who hide the caches, she wouldn't worry as much.

MissJenn, Gawain isn't the Green Knight. The name of the poem is Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. The Green Knight's name is Bertilak.
So the gnome could be Bertilak. There was also a second Green Knight called Pertolepe. Or Dagonet, after King Arthur's fool. Or you could name him after one of the dwarves in the tales, Druidan, Evadeam, Frocin, Melot, Tristan (not the knight, of course), or Tronc.
Or you could name him Bob. Bob the Gnome.

So your groups already use GPSr's in the field, with no incidents? That alleviates some of my nervousness. I think I'll work up a couple of those ideas I had after all. Thanks.

Hi, Vash. I don't paintball, but I do a fantasy boffer LARP, and I, too, have tried to figure out a way to combine the two hobbies. I only came up with one problem - what happens if someone's GPSr breaks?
In my case, I'm pretty sure that my Etrex could more than withstand the occasional fight (we make a point of not hitting hard), but I don't know about other units. There's also the slight risk of someone tripping on a random rock and falling flat on her face and her unit. (In the middle of the night, while I was in a group of 6 people sneaking from one side of the site to the other.
I didn't have a unit then.) In a paintball game, wouldn't there be a higher risk of possible GPSr breakage? Paintballs fly fast and hard enough to leave welts (unlike padded "swords" and birdseed packets) and when they break open, a lovely colored goo gets splattered all over you. Do you think it could cause a problem?
The only thing I could think of was possibly using one of the no-contact LARP systems for a modern espionage-type scenario and having them head to the coordinates for their drop point, or something like that.
Anyway, since we seem to be dealing with similar, if not identical problems, I wouldn't mind discussing this a bit more, either here or via email.

Those are the ones with no lines, right? How are they working out for you? My mom-in-law has them, and she wishes she had gone for the old-fashioned bifocals instead.
What do bifocals have to do with being "old," anyway? I'll be 29 later this year, and I've been wearing bifocals since I was 11.

Actually, the original chapter for the game is in Massachusetts, which doesn't seem all that far.
